It was exactly like watching a domino display go down. That was terrible, traumatic, and just totally wild. Holy moly. So sad, as they are saying there has been some casualties. Wow, if I didn’t know better and just watched the clip I would chalk it up to a movie scene.
Thanks for the link, I had just seen the video on our early morning news but missed part of the story of where and what happened so was just on my way to find more information.
It is extremely lucky that it happened in the middle of the night though. I think the death toll could be much higher if it was a busy part of the day or evening.

Just seeing this on the news now. It’s like a toy falling over. They say there are workers in the water. Hopefully they will all be rescued quickly.

So sad. I can’t understand how a ship could hit a bridge. Maybe a steering malfunction?

Just terrible. I heard 20 workers and at least seven vehicles fell from the bridge. It’s quite cold too.

So sad. I can’t understand how a ship could hit a bridge. Maybe a steering malfunction? DH's work is with shipping. There are reports of all the lights going out and smoke coming from the funnel a few minutes before the ship drifted off-course towards the bridge support. That sounds like a complete loss of power, which would include the navigation systems, and possibly the steering. I haven't seen anything about the bridge itself, but the fact that there were workers on the bridge at the time might mean that at least one direction was closed for the work. If so, that could mean fewer casualties than there might have been. Lots of prayers going up for everyone involved.

This is about an hour from me. They are looking for seven people right now. I believe they were construction workers. They have one person in serious condition.
I am so glad this did not happen during rush hour. The bridge would be full of school buses, mass transit buses, heavy traffic. This bridge is part of the Beltway around Baltimore (695), heavily traveled most hours.
I just woke up and have not had time to listen to all the news. I hope this was not deliberate.

I have a friend who crosses that bridge every day for work. It's horrible enough right now, but imagine if it had happened during rush hour? omg... So tragic, and so amazing how the bridge just fell apart.

It looks like the ship lost power twice before approaching the bridge. Not deliberate.

DH grew up around Baltimore, he said all the shipping boats are now stuck in the harbor for a while, and that was 695, so... what a cluster. I am so glad this didn't happen during rush hour either!

It was the first thing I saw on the news this morning, it was like watching a disaster movie, how awful.
I'm glad it was in the early morning hours or it could have been so much worse.

I have recurring nightmares of exactly this - the video is like I’m dreaming.
It’s just so, so, so awful. I hope they can rescue the people who were on the bridge - prayers said. You can see flashing lights on vehicles on the bridge - I would imagine there were engineers, police officers etc… when they realized the bridge was hit.

I have had a fear of bridges as long as I can remember. My son is in Maryland and I'm headed that way in May. My route doesn't take me through Baltimore but the beltway above DC. I need to check for bridges. The last time I drove there, we had the bridge and tunnels at Norfolk. I was a mess during that. My prayers that everyone is found.

So sad. The video is chilling. I read a news report this morning that said the ship called in to say they were malfunctioning and a collision was possible...

This is about 45 minutes from me. The local news was saying there could be as many as 20 cars in the water based on the sonar. All of the surrounding counties (mine included) have sent teams and equipment to the scene to help.
This is the Baltimore Beltway (695). It won't impact 95 travel because you would either take 95 through Baltimore or take 895.
The video footage is crazy!

OMG. Being on a bridge that collapses has always been one of my biggest fears! I have always hated driving across bridges especially those that go over water. Those poor people.

Gov. Moore said that the ship released a mayday call minutes before the impact which allowed traffic to be stopped before they got onto the bridge. This is why there weren't more cars.

They think that they have located 3 cars, a cement truck and another unknown vehicle under water. Some or all might belong to the construction workers, two of whom have been found, one hospitalized one refused treatment.
The crew was repairing pot holes etc, which probably accounts for the cement truck.

Somehow, I thought that the sections of the bridge would be more independent from one another ... like maybe lose a section on either side of impact, but not the entirety of the bridge

The video footage is crazy! I dunno about that, it's a major artery. We usually took the tunnel, but there are trucks that cannot use the tunnel bc of what they are transporting, so I expect the other routes to be a lot more congested.
