A couple of my kiddos have inherited their Dads flaky scalp. It is especially bad in the winter.
DS has his hair cut shorter now and it is really noticeable. DD says hers really bothers her too.
They have used Head & Shoulders with some success, but it could be better.
Any tried and true brands that you would recommend?

Head and Shoulders increased the flakes for me. Since the flakes are dry skin related, I'd try moisturizing the scalp...hot oil treatment to hair once per week. In my case, I changed shampoo and hair spray and cured the problem.

Like librarylady, H&S often makes my flaking worse. So do Nizoral and Selsun Blue. I haven't found any that really work, but if the itch is really bothering her, try the neutrogena t-gel stubborn itch (I have only found it at WalMart, even though most places carry other versions of t-gel). Smells awful, was the best for me when the itch was out of control. You may also want to take a trip to the dermatologist to make sure it's just dry scalp. Short version is that I have a prescription for a liquid steroid that I am supposed to use daily for a few weeks to control the flaking, but I'm not disciplined enough so I use it to spot treat when I have flare ups of dermatitis that gives me open, raw, sore areas. I will say, though, that I have switched to Paul Mitchell Tea Tree as my regular shampoo, and I'm happiest using that. Anything with peppermint in it (strong enough to smell) has really been soothing to me. (Garden Botanika's was best, but I haven't bought from them in decades.)

If your kids have sensitive skin the chemicals in the shampoo could be creating the problem. Their is an awesome product called Morrocco Method that is raw, vegan, cruelty-free, soy-free, GMO-free, gluten-free and sodium lauryl sulfate-free. It leaves your hair clean and heals itchy scalp. Try a shampoo that has tea tree oil in it.

Besides having a flaky scalp, I'm sensitive to most shampoos, I can not use Shampoo with sulfates in it. I haven't found a flaky scalp sulfate free shampoo that actually works. I'll admit that there are some expensive ones out there that I haven't tried though. I got burnt out spending money on shampoo to not be able to use it. I can't spend the money for another flop so if I can't find a smaller trial suze I don't bother.
I use a moisturizing sulfate free shampoo and 2x a week I use a mix of tea tree oil with argan oil, almond oil, or coconut oil directly on my scalp.I got a 1.5 oz bottle with a long pointy top with a tiny opening on it at a craft store. I apply it directly to my scalp not my hair (hair dry) wrap my head in a hot towel. Then after 10 minutes I comb it thru my dry hair then I get in the shower and shampoo. I do this every 2-3 days so twice a week.
I mix equal parts of argan oil and either almond oil or coconut oil ( which ever I have ) add about 6-8 drops of tea tree oil and put it in my bottle. In the winter I prefer the almond oil simply because then I don't have to deal with liquefying the coconut oil.

We've had intermittent issues with dandruff with my kids. One of the tips that I remember is to rotate the dandruff shampoos you use in terms of active ingredients.

Thanks for your input!
I have ordered a Rusk shampoo that also has Tea Tree oil in it.

I have psoriasis and my dermatologist recommended T-Sal, not T-Gel (I didn't even know there were 2 different options). I notice a little difference but to get any real relief I have to use a steroid cream.
With it being cold and using the fireplace all the time I find I need a humidifier. It helps relieve dry skin so you might try that if their flakes are caused by the dry air and not a medical condition.

Nioxin, expensive and sold for thinning hair but as it was explained to me it is a scalp cleanser that will promote hair growth. My scalp is itch and flake free and my hair is thicker. I stopped using it for a few months because of the cost, guy who cuts my hair noticed. I buy it once a year at Ulta with either a good coupon or when it is on sale.
