my little Dachshund who died last month. It really touched me!
I got a letter from the university explaining that her name went in a book or something, and the donation went to research. It's a big veterinary college that handles a lot of veterinary lab work, etc for the state's veterinarians.
I thought it was a classy thing for the vet office to do. Did your vet do this or something like it?

Not that but when my ferret died on the op table the wonderful vet didn't charge me and had his remains cremated for me.

How sweet of your vet! When I took my dog in for a checkup, my vet asked about my elderly cat. I told him the cat had died a few months ago. A couple of days later, I received a sympathy card from him and his staff for the loss of my cat.

Our dog died at age 16.5 years. Our vet sent a donation to Morris Animal Foundation in her memory. We learned that our dog was his first new patient after he bought the practice. Our dog loved our vet and loved going to see the vet.
We were very touched by his gift in her honor.

I love that your vet chose to do that. I think it was both touching and classy to have Midge memoralized in that way. And the money goes toward research to hopefully lessen the diseases of animals in the future? Total win. I like your vet.
My last vet's office sent me a sympathy card when they had to put my cat down. The vet wrote a personal message in it and also sent me a candle, a CD of some nice soothing music, and a print out of the rainbow bridge and the Monday night prayer done for animals across the world. That one really touched my heart. I wasn't aware that animal lovers who had lost a pet designated a certain time on Mondays to pray and light 3 candles. I think it was one for the pet you personally have lost, one for the pets of other people who were sick or had passed, and a third for all the homeless and neglected animals in the world. I have given copies of that Monday prayer to friends along with a triple wick candle to help them adjust to the loss of their pet. It helped me adjust when I lost the last of my 3 beloved kitties and had no more pets at home.
When I adopted my sibling kitties a few months later, I took them to the same vet who was so happy that I rescued more kitties. But when I adopted the dog, I switched vets to one that was highly recommended by the place I purchase his food. I really do prefer the new vet, but haven't lost a pet since I've been with them, thank goodness.
They do send home a stuffed animal when my pets have had surgery or been really sick. The stuffed animal is wearing a cute little T-shirt advertising their office on it. The only oversight on their part, the stuffed animal isn't for dogs to play with because it has plastic eyes and buttons on it. Unless this is their way of getting repeat business by having to remove the eyeballs that your dog ate from their feel better toy.

That is so cool your vet did that. The day after our vet came to our house to put Lilly down, we got flowers and a sympathy card from the vet and staff.

Our vet did something similar when we put a cat down, but frankly, my thought was "Oh, you want to give money away? How about you discount the bill instead?"

That is really neat We got a sympathy card from the emergency vet hospital that put our dog down. They were so kind and patient with us, 1 1/2 yrs later I still appreciate it.

Yes, we've had two pets that passed after a long illness and multiple vet visits. They did the same thing. Made me really appreciate them even more than I already did (still do).

Wow - now that is a wonderful vet. So sorry for you loss of Midge, but how nice of your vet to do that.
When my dog died, my vet sent me a sympathy card and wrote a personal note inside.

Some people just get their fur people are their family, too. They just love animals for the sake of loving them. (We are animal people and my ex hates animals unless you can eat them). I think this was a really awesome thing for your vet to do, and I am sorry you lost dear Midge. I am sure she was a wonderful companion and best friend her entire life she loved you as much as she knew how and there is no greater gift than the love from a child or animal!

Our last dog was put down at an emergency vet hospital, they gave us a little box when we left - it was a paw print ornament. When our regular vet took the remains to be cremated they sent us a nicely made card with his paw print stamped inside and a sympathy card signed with personal messages by his 2 regular vets and 3 vet techs who always had to struggle with him. The donation was a nice touch.

A few weeks after we had to put our kitty down, we got a card from the Arbor Day Foundation saying that they had received a donation from our vet in his name and a tree had been planted in his honor in the Gallatin National Forest. I was so touched by it - it made me really like our vet even more.

What a sweet gesture in memory of your Midge. Not sure if our vet does that but it makes me teary eyed just thinking about it.

I am a little morbidly curious about the process of pressing the little corpse's paw into the clay. Do you think it was really your dog's paw print, or maybe they used a stamp?

Our vet definitely uses the actual animal's paw. They also donate to the college where my vet went to vet school. She's a good friend of mine, so I hear about the "package." They will also take a lock of hair from your pet. The cremains came to us in a pretty wooden box with floral carving on it, along with the Rainbow Bridge poem on heavy card stock, suitable for framing.

Mine sent me her pawprint in clay and they stamped Princess on it too. It sits on the shelf in the LR so I can see it every day. I know it's her print, because I knew every millimeter of my sweet angel. It's been nearly two years and I still cry...weekly. She was the love of my life. She's still my background picture on my phone and there's a picture of her in every room of my house. Penelope went to the vet the other day and as we were leaving, through the Petsmart store, guess who we met? A three-legged pittie. I melted. So did Penelope.

My vet in this town does the same thing. He gives to Purdue University where he graduated from.
When we relocated from Texas, we had our beloved beagle, Tucker put to sleep the day before we moved. I really didn't have time to grieve we were so busy with the 1100 mile move. I couldn't bear to leave her behind, so I had the vet in Texas cremate her. A couple of weeks after we had moved, I received her cremains. When I opened the package, there was a beautiful wooden box that contained her cremains, a copy of the rainbow bridge poem, and a small plaque with her paw print. I know for a fact it was her paw print because she had lost one of her toes when she had a bad infection. That was the foot that they used for the paw print. I don't think I have ever cried so hard in my whole life. It still kills me to think about losing her, leaving her behind and the day I got her back.
ETA -Sisterbdsq, I'm so sorry for your loss. Tuckie was the love of my life. I don't think I'll ever get over losing her. I keep her box on my bedroom dresser along with several of my other pets remains. They will all be put with me when I die. Forever. For eternity.

Our vet did this as well. About a month after we lost our cat, we received a card from the vet with a note stating they had donated $50 to an animal health research facility. I wasn't expecting that, and I thought it was a great gesture. It sent me into yet another pool of tears of course, but I don't mind part of my final bill being donated to a place that is working on improving animals lives. Who knows... They may discover something that will help with our next fur baby, whenever that happens.

We had a dog that we had to put to sleep after a somewhat short illness that required a lot of veterinary care. We got a donation to a veterinary school, a card from the vet, and then I received a really lovely note from the vet tech who took care of her. (She had been in intensive care for several days, so this woman had spent a lot of time with her.) The vet who put her to sleep also called the next day to see how we were doing.

After we lost Heidi, my vet's office sent a very sweet condolence card with the signatures of the office staff and the two vets our dog saw in their office.
A friend of mine takes her pets to a different vet - she does a lot of rescue work with this vet. After her cat passed away, he made a donation in her cat's name to the rescue organization.

I've enjoyed the thread, but I can't wrap my head around this problem enough to even ponder it.... Both of our dogs took their last trip to the same vet, and we got nada but a bill. Never did think much of that vet.
