This is just so heartbreaking. This is not someone I know well, but was a close friend of my neighbors, I had met her and socialized with her many times at various functions. Anyway - here's the story:
She was 38 years old and pregnant for the first time with twin girls. Apparently her uterus ruptured and her and both babies did not make it, I'm not sure exactly how far into the pregnancy she was, I don't think more than 5 months or so, she was just starting to show at Christmas time.
I'm heartbroken for my neighbor, she is beyond devastated, this was her best friend. It just boggles my mind that in this day and age women still die from pregnancy complications.
Please pray for her and her friends and family, I can't imagine what her husband is going through.

How sad!!! She almost had to have been in labor.... I know that women who have had c- sections might be concerned about rupture, but for a first pregnancy... Her poor husband!!

I am so sorry. I will definitely be keeping her family in my thoughts and prayers.
My SIL had a weird condition where her uterus was kinda divided--she was high risk. They were concerned that she could rupture like that. I think her doctor discovered it when he did more testing after she miscarried.
It's easy to forget that childbirth was the largest killer of women throughout history. I worry that a lot of women who are doing the whole no gyn/just dulah home birth route are forgetting this. I've read some home birth stories that have raised the hairs on the back of my neck. If something catastrophic did happen, the mother and baby would have mere minutes to be in the surgery theatre. 30 minutes by ambulance is just way too far away--15 minutes to get to her, get her loaded up, then 15 minutes to the hospital.
There are so many queens and princesses who died in childbirth, and they had the *best* care of anyone. It's so sobering.

I'm sorry. I lost my best friend this way 11 years ago. she was only 23, having her first child. during labor her uterus ruptured and she was gone within seconds. they were able to save her daughter, thank god. her dad was a radiologist at that hospital. he said it's so easy to forget that not that long ago in history, childbirth was one of the most dangerous things you could go thru. and still in this age, nothing is guaranteed. still miss her.

I know a woman who had had a D and C after a miscarriage. When she carried the next one to term and went into labor, her uterus ruptured because the D And C had weakened/poked the top of the uterus. She and the baby survived. The weakness was discovered when they removed her uterus and sent it to a lab to figure out what happened.
I almost died from an abruption.
Pregnancy and childbirth can be dangerous.
Sorry for your/ everyone's loss. So tragic to lose someone amidst so much hope and joy.

There are so many queens and princesses who died in childbirth, and they had the *best* care of anyone. It's so sobering. My little sister's liver ruptured while she pushing out her first child. Luckily, she was in a hospital with a trauma center; had she not been the doctors say she may not have made it. When it first happened the doctor thought her uterus ruptured. Because of my sister's ordeal I think people who do the home births are incredibly foolish. Everything for my sister was routine up until the point her liver ruptured.

How devastating . I've known several women, including a niece, that were hospitalized for life-threatening issues during pregnancy but none that died.

Yes. This is how I lost my best friend when she was 35 years old. Her baby survived but she did not. He will be 19 in April. I still think about her nearly every day.
I am so sorry it has happened to someone else.

I'm sorry! Her family is in my prayers.
I was told not to have any more kids in the midst of my last c-section because my uterus was so thin that the doc was surprised that it hadn't ruptured - and I went into labor 6 weeks before my due date, who knows what would have happened if my water hadn't broken so early.
We are fortunate that we no longer live in a time where pregnancy and childbirth are the number cause of death for women - even in 1st world countries.

I seem to remember a Pea just a few years back who died in her last trimester or while giving birth. Both mother and son died. I believe it was an aneurysm. It was so sad and shocking when her husband posted the news. Do you know who I am talking about? The name Becki comes to mind. ETA: I just remembered the name was Mysti.

This is so sad. There was a story in the news recently about a first time mom dying from an amniotic embolism. So rare that most OB/GYN's never encounter it. Nothing is a guarantee

My cousin's wife almost died when her uterus ruptured during labor. They had a lot of trouble stopping the hemorrhaging, and she had an emergency hysterectomy. I had heard about rupturing during VBAC, but before her, I wasn't aware that a rupture was possible without a previous c-section. It's an extremely rare, but very serious complication.

That's so sad! The poor woman. I don't know anyone off hand that has had problems when their kids were born. That's so sad to hear how often it has happened to people in the posts above.

That is so very sad. They will be in my thoughts. With all of the medical advances we have now, it's easy to forget how quickly things can go really, really wrong.

That is extremely sad. I am very sorry for the others too that posted the lost a friend.
There were a few cases in Massachusetts in the news last year because they happened at the same hospital in a relatively close timeframe. And yes, it brings to light that there are still pregnancies that have complications and result in death in United States.
The researchers estimated that 18.5 mothers died for every 100,000 births in the U.S. in 2013, a total of almost 800 deaths. [from the Washington Post]
The death of a woman during pregnancy, at delivery, or soon after delivery is a tragedy for her family and for society as a whole. Sadly, about 650 women die each year in the United States as a result of pregnancy or delivery complications. [from the cdc website Dec 2014]
I remember this too. Was she the one that her husband found her collapsed in the laundry room?

My mother's sister died in childbirth from an embolism. This was back in the 1940's (the child that lived is like a sister to me). Every woman in the family after that went into each pregnancy with a bit of trepidation. Fortunately history didn't repeat itself for us.

How sad and shocking for her family. Hugs to you, it's rough news for someone in your sphere.
As PP have mentioned pregnancy and childbirth remain risky, even with access to good healthcare and parental care.
We should all remember this when we're tempted to comment on another Mother's delivery plan, or speculate afterwards.

Absolutely tragic. I do know of someone who had a traumatic delivery when her uterus ruptured. Both her and the baby survived but it was a close call.
