I like southern grits- if "dun rite"! My Midwest mom made Mush, which was sort of like polenta. But I cannot wrap my brain around Scrapple. I can't explain the reason.
Are there any regional foods you resist?

When we lived in Augusta GA we used to go to Sconyer's BBQ. They served hash over rice. It looks like something that came back up. However, after the first bite it was a favorite.

Mmmm, I love most what is considered typical "southern" foods...but not greens. I grew up with my mom making collard greens and I just can't get behind that. They do not smell good at all, and the idea of eating them makes my stomach squirmy.

Midwest things I grew up with (not in our house, but at potlucks, friend's houses, etc) but have no trouble passing on: Any casserole or dish that requires potato chips, liquid cheese, crumbled Ritz, a packet of jello or instant pudding, Cool Whip, ketchup,a can of coke, a packet of soup flavoring, or chow mein noodles
Casseroles requiring cream soups or French fried onions are taken on a case-by-case basis
Otherwise, it's game on.

Mine is grits. I don't hate them, but don't love them either. We had them growing up and Mom's rule was you had to take 2 small bites just to make sure you still didn't like something. I never acquired the taste for them.
About the 2 bites rule: I always said I HATED shrimp, somewhere along the line and the taking of the 2 bites I began to really like shrimp. Tastes change.

I'm with you on the lutefisk, much to the chagrin of my primarily Scandinavian family, but lefse? What's to hate about lefse?!?! (Just the mention of lutefisk is giving me flashbacks to the annual lutefisk dinner in college when the whole damn student center would smell like it all day )

When I moved here DH wanted me to try something called Flitch. It's instant potato flakes with powdered sugar and peanut butter. It was awful! It's suppose to be a cookie type thing...I don't like sweets but even if I did I would still dislike this.

Well, if any of these dishes taste/look anything like their names, Scrapple, geoduck, Mush, Shoofly pie etc, then I won't be rushing to try them the next time I'm in the States!

I love grits and have learned that they can be prepared a million different ways. I prefer mine with just butter, salt and scrambled eggs on the side. They are also good with cheese and bacon. The people who eat them with sugar and cinnamon...I just don't understand Turnip greens and collard greens are also something I never developed a taste for and pickled beets....those are just nasty. Believe it or not, I don't eat a lot of fried foods. Being from the south, that is almost unheard of, but I really don't care for most fried foods.

Over here, haggis - OH loves the stuff, but he is Scottish so it's in his breeding or was somehow implanted in his psyche from an early age. I am English and clearly don't have the palette for it!

I definitely cannot do shoofly pie. It's the name...the name completely turns me off. The texture and color look like mushed up flies. I grew up in Amish Country here in Pennsylvania and I have never even tried shoofly pie. I hear it's delicious, but I wouldn't know.

I am not fond of Cajun food. I like grits. I have tasted haggis and it wasn't bad, but I wouldn't want to eat it regularly. I've never tasted lutefisk and have no plans to, but you never know.

I just realized after reading this thread that there ARE Midwestern regional things-- casseroles and jello salads, lol!! I grew up on two jello 'salads' (I use the term salad loosely) that I will not ever willingly eat again (unless my Mom makes them, and then I would probably have to eat them): strawberry jello with banana slices, and lime jello with shredded carrots.
Casseroles aren't too bad depending on what kind they are, but I would never make- or eat- one that used French-fried onions or tater tots (I don't think, anyway).

I had to google shoofly pie, as I love Molasses it looks great to me! DH loves grits, he developed a taste for them with butter when he was in the army and did basic training in the south. I make them for him on special occasions, no one else in the family will eat them. to me, our only regional food here is BBQ and I could eat that all day. No gizzards though.
