I bought a Dover 4-book compilation of 'paisley patterns' designs at M's yesterday-- I haven't started coloring yet, but will spend some time with it later this week! I did go to Hobby Lobby, but alas, the largest Sargent brand colored pencil set I saw was either 48 or 72... (I couldn't bring myself to spend the $$ on Prismacolors.)
FYI, for anyone who is still looking, I DID see one of the Johanna Basford books (Enchanted Forest, maybe??) at Michael's, up in the front where the magazines are.

After the thread on paint-by-number kits, I ordered Sacred Mandela Designs from Amazon - it should be on my doorstep tomorrow! I'm so excited! And it's fun to see so many others excited by something so simple as coloring!

I saw some of these in a discount bookstore this last weekend and almost bought some, but my 13 year old laughed at me! I wish I had picked them up, now. The paper was lovely quality and you could easily frame them or use them as scrapbook papers in your own choice of colours.

I do too - and the pens JoP!! Someone I know got 'Secret Garden' and 'Animal Kingdom' in the UK, along with Spectrum Noir pencils and they looked amazing! She spent a fair part of Sunday afternoon using them and thoroughly enjoyed herself! With my luck though, everyone in the country will have wanted these recently and they will be sold out and it will be weeks before more stocks arrive. JoP and BarbaraUK They can be found at Waterstones, saw them on sale before Easter.

This board is the worst! I am going to go broke. You bunch of enablers! I bought the creative cats book, the twist up Crayola's and the blending stumps! What pens are good to use that aren't horribly expensive?

I have both books and love them. Secret Garden has more of a traditional coloring book paper, while Enchanted Forrest has a thicker paper. My markers bleed through in SG but not EF. Good news is the new reprints of SG will have the thicker paper. I'm using Prismacolor pencils and I'm not in love with them. I'm trying to find the Staedtlers locally but haven't had any luck. I love Staedtler's fineliner pens and fibre tip pens! If anyone is contemplating using Tombow's Colorplay pens - don't. They are awful and streak terribly. (I have spent way too much money lately on pens and pencils!) I have the Derwent watercolour pencils and LOVE them. They're awesome pencils dry and are much more vibrant when you dip the leads in water. To get the look of watercolours, you lightly shade in areas and then rub a damp paintbrush or q-tip over the area. I make a lot of custom cards using the blank watercolour paper card and envelope packs you can find at Michael's in their art section. Everyone loves them. I also use the pencils in sketch pads when I'm traveling or sketching outdoors then do any watercolour techniques when I get back home. The Derwent drawing pencils are also excellent. I bought a set as a teen, and I still have them. The leads are great quality, so they last forever.

I may do just that. I need to order pens through Amazon too. Thanks! I liked the flowers so I went with THIS ONESorry it took me a few days to reply to this. My sister-in-law is big on coloring (she is on dialysis and it helps to pass the time) and I offered to pick up a copy of Secret Garden for her. After we found out they are sold out locally, she went to Amazon and emailed a link to me of the book she decided to order instead. It happens to be the exact same one you ordered so I'm joining the club and buying it too! It's a great alternative.

For those that have very recently purchased and received the Secret Garden book, are the pages thicker? I have read the post here that says the new reprint edition will have thicker pages so I'm hoping I get one from that batch (purchased on Amazon Saturday and don't have a delivery date yet). The Amazon reviews are a little confusing because some reviews mention the paper is nice and thick while most say it is too thin.
Locally, I found the Creative Haven Creative Cats and the drawings are really adorable. Now, even more reasons why the dusting doesn't get done.

The lead is very high quality and they colour beautifully!

I'm the one who posted this and just for the record, I got that info from the artist's (author's?) FB page. Someone asked her if the new editions would have the thicker paper and she said yes. I'd like to know too if they've started showing up yet.

It turns out that the 120 set that I bought contains two of each color! So it was a good deal with the coupon but not as exciting as I first thought. And I made myself a color chart (I enjoyed that almost as much as actually coloring) so I could tell them apart - honestly the difference between some of the colors is barely noticeable to the naked eye. Like you, I don't think I could ever do bring myself to spend $$ on the Prismacolors! But if I decide to splurge, based on this experience I would now be happy with a set with fewer colors. You really don't need 15 different blues, LOL.

I just posted this in my spin off thread but thought I would post here in case anyone is interested: Okay, just started coloring a bit this morning, and I am having SO much fun. I LOVE coloring with my: *Talens Angora Watercolor Pan Set *Kuretake Waterbrush Both of these I have had for a long time but they are still available on amazon. Also, I LOVE the book I ordered from Jenean Morrison. The paper holds the color/water great, and I love the images. I don't think I need the Secret Garden book. This one is totally me. I will post a photo when I finish my first page. Have fun coloring everyone!

This is the first coloring page in the book. I know because I just started coloring it last night. I also picked up this book for my DD12. It was nice sitting at the table, coloring together and chatting. We used to do it all the time when she was little. I'm glad we're getting the chance to do it again.

Not quite as exciting, indeed- except: this way you don't have to worry about 'using up' your favorite colors, because you'll have an extra!! and I'm sure they look good, lying all fanned out on the table! Good tip about making a color chart, too- sometimes the colors in colored pencils or markers don't look like they actually will when you use them. (if you know what I mean; I can't figure out how else to write it... lol!)

Was just coming to tell you that DD checked out our nearest Waterstones this afternoon and they don't have any in at the moment. She is calling into Costco tomorrow for me, as it's near to her office, to get a cooked chicken and a couple of other things so will put a colouring book on the list as well. Thanks JoP!

You're welcome BarbaraUK - there was a choice of two in ours - Blue or pink spine - chose the one with the girlie pink spine I like the pictures better - I don't think it's as challenging as The Secret Garden - which will be good for me
