You refupeas are a bunch of enablers for sure. I just happened to pop in to a B & N last weekend and picked up a coloring book, Creative Coloring for Grown-Ups - Beautiful Patterns. It was on a discount table and cost me less than $7. I was in Chicago for the weekend and several times thought about how I couldn't wait to get home and do some coloring. I admit, I was there for 2 bridal showers for a friend's nieces and there was a lot of down time that was spent visiting with her relatives. Anyway, I have been playing with my colored pencils since I got home and have really been enjoying it. I like doing it while I am watching TV, not only is it relaxing but it keeps my hands busy so I am not munching mindlessly. It's a twofer.

I've discovered that 48 colors is NOT enough!!! I'm working on a few free pages from online while waiting for my Secret Garden book and 3 or 4 greens are just not enough. With all the floral aspects, I really want a wide range of greens, pinks, yellows, oranges and purples.
Is there a quality pencil set that had a really good range of colors? I ordered the prismacoler 132 set from Amazon, but it is about $100. I think I need some better pencils, and also a wider range of colors, so this is good info. Maybe I'll re-read what people were writing about markers, too, although I think I want to stick with pencils (perhaps I'll switch to watercolor pencils?? don't know.) Over the weekend I started coloring a free sheet I printed off the internet that was a bouquet of flowers in a vase-- I found out very quickly that I also need more pinks, corals, greens, etc!! The other issue I had was with the pencils themselves- I just have a (cheap-ish) set of Crayola colored pencils-- maybe 48 colors? but the real issue I had is that the pencil lead was too hard for my liking, so I had to use a ton of pressure to get the amount of color I wanted onto the page. And a couple of the colors just would not sharpen- every time I tried to sharpen them, the lead broke off! (it's tough to feel 'relaxed' and 'de-stress' when the thing that's supposed to help de-stress you is making you irritated, lol!) eta: maybe watercolor pencils, because they can be blended into many different colors?? so many choices, lol!!

Wait! What? You file red after pink after purple! GENIUS! I have a lot of things filed by color and putting Red first (ROY G BIV) throws a lot off when I move into browns. They just get stuck on the end without fitting in well. I guess reds could be separated by whether they are orange or blue red and then filed at either end. This is very exciting, Patter!

leftturnonly, yep, I never could do RoyGBiv. I do my own thing, and that's how I have had everything color sorted in my room for years. Works great for me. And crimsoncat05, I love the Peerless watercolors. I will do a few pages with my colored pencils too as I want to see how different it looks.

okay, one more question for you, Patter: (I haven't watched the video yet because Im at work- lol!) did you figure out the Peerless colors from the color swatch sheet on their website, and if so was it difficult to do- or did you pay the extra $$ to get labeled ones?

We were sitting her Saturday night at 9:30 pm she looked at me and asked me if I would color with her. She did it. She turned on the coloring switch. We were up until well after 11:30 coloring. I was needing to go to bed but I had to finish the page I was coloring. The next morning I found my self in the craft room at 6 am coloring. I couldn't stop. I have been coloring for days. She likes to do challenges for each page.

I just reread what I wrote, and separating red like that doesn't really work, does it? The orange side of the red is where the browns start to fit in. DUH. Maybe coffee would help.

Patter - Where do you put whites/creams, blacks and greys? If I start with white, move into cream, then yellow on down to violet, pink, red, orange, brown, black, grey.... that would really make a nice transition!

eta: maybe watercolor pencils, because they can be blended into many different colors?? so many choices, lol!! Someone on here post a video showing sharpening pencils with an X-acto knife. I tried that this weekend and it worked wonderfully! I'm not even going to bother now to find a good sharpener, just going to use a knife. here's a photo of one of my zentangles that I colored this weekend

I don't know why they charge for labels because the name was on the back of each watercolor. I just made sure when I punched my 1x1 piece that I didn't punch into the color name so that I know which is which when I need to replace the color. You will understand that once you see the video.

What sharpeners does everyone use? I purchased this one www.amazon.com/Staedtler-Double-hole-Tub-Pencil-Sharpener/dp/B001E67Z16/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1429564019&sr=8-2&keywords=staedtler+pencil+sharpener
and it is working out very well. It makes a fine sharp tip but does not "over sharpen" (grind down the pencil). You need to develop a technique that essentially move the sharpener around the pencil instead of turning the pencil in the sharpener. I do this by holding the sharpener in my left hand on its side and the pencil in my right hand. I start rotating the sharpen around the pencil. Works far better than any sharpener I've ever had and the shavings stay neat in the container and it has a pop lid to close over the sharpening holes while not in use.

I had ordered the Derwent Inktense set of 36 and I didn't like them at all. They're going back to Amazon today and I think I'm going to get their 72 ct watercolor pencil set. I have about 45 or so prismacolor pencils but I'm hoping to find a broader selection of colors.

It is my understanding that you have to use water with these? Is that correct? I want to keep my book dry as I'm concerned about warping pages.
I am using Derwent Colorsoft pencils (48 set) and like them. They color a bit nicer than my DD's set of Prismacolor pencils (those leave quite a bit of white spots that you have to blend out with a blender pencil).

I don't have any watercolor pencils (yet, lol!) but I believe you can use them dry or wet. I've tried them out at the art store, and if I recall correctly, you can either wet the pencil lead, or color in your picture with the dry pencils and then use a bit of water and a brush to get them to blend and liquefy into a true 'watercolor' look.

I got my Beautiful Designs & Patterns the other day - little disappointed in the book - smaller than I thought, and flimsy --hard to keep in flat without working on a desk or table--i.e., in my lap in front of the tv. But I love it! I'm using my Crayola pencils and am happy with them (but if extra money falls in my lap, I'll be making a trip to the art store!) Just did a few flowers at the end of my lunch hour, and I am in heaven! How did I survive most of my adult life without coloring? ??

I finally found an online store that had The Enchanted Forest in stock (should be here tomorrow). I love Secret Garden and can't wait to see the new one. It is so relaxing and doesn't require a lot of room. Although my husband thinks I'm nuts because I keep buying pencil sharpeners. The one I got yesterday is nice and was cheap (under $2) and gives the pencils the short colored pencil point.

I avoided this thread because I kept thinking, what do I need with a coloring book? OK, the 7-pager got my attention...and now I see what the awesomeness is about. They're gorgeous!!! Unfortunately, I have so many crafts going on right now I can't take up another one. But I'm putting the book as the next thing on my list. It doesn't take much to enable me!
