S/O Milk

My pediatrician recently suggested I move from whole to two percent. I asked him why because my 3 children are quite slim. He said it's to get them used to a lower percent as they get older and become adults. So, I switched. They don't seem to notice but they might if I served them one percent.
What do you buy? (I don't drink milk so I don't know the taste difference.) Do you agree with my pediatrician?

I don't like milk, but I always buy 1%. My kids preferred to drink 1%.

Skim. I don't drink it but DD does. And she doesn't need the extra calories.

I buy 2%. It's a compromise between whole and 1%. As far as I'm concerned, 1% and 2% taste the same, and I can taste the little extra fat in the whole milk. And skim milk is gross. You may as well drink water.

I buy non fat, but that is for me, my kids always drink 2% as does my husband. There is some new milk called Fairlife or something like that that is non fat that is thicker and creamier then regular non fat, it is really good. It is higher in protein and lower in sugar due to a filtering process, nothing is added or altered like that ultra pasteurized stuff.

I don't drink milk, but I use 1% for cereal. I can't stand skim, it's just too watery. I only use whole milk for making cream of chicken soup.

I prefer 1%, but I can drink 2% and there isn't much of a taste difference between the two.

My kids drank whole milk between the ages of 1-2, then I moved them down to 1%. Once in a while we get 2% (DH. Doesn't pay too much attention to detail when he shops, lol). I do usually use 2% for cooking. I don't personally drink milk, it doesn't agree with me!

DS was on formula until he was 3. Then he went to water. He couldn't drink milk. He tried chocolate milk for a while and my GP supported that. She said the few extra calories outweigh the extra sugar. He stopped drinking it all together. He won't go near milk now. Ever.

Whole milk. I've always bought whole milk. None of my kids are milk drinkers (one is lactose intolerant) and a gallon will last us a couple weeks so why skimp of taste? A little with cereal, a splash in coffee or to cook mac & cheese is the usual use. My MIL will sometimes buy skim or 1% and bring it over when she is in town...it never gets used. The kids are used to the red label milk anything else is "weird".

I normally drink skim milk. Have most of my life. When I make my own chai tea at home though I do use 2%. That little bit of extra creaminess makes all the difference when I'm giving up my Starbucks.

I don't think there is a flavor difference from whole, 2%, 1% or skim. They all do have different "mouth feel" Whole milk is noticeably thicker than skim. With the 1 & 2% being between them. Whole milk has the full cream homogenized into it so it doesn't separate and rise to the top like milk used to do. Each of the others have various amounts of the cream removed.
I usually buy whole milk but I don't use a lot of milk so the extra calories aren't a concern. My kids weren't huge milk drinkers so they grew up with whole milk. I think all of them have transitioned to 2% as their caloric awareness and needs have changed.

My kids LOVE milk and have always been on the small/slim side. We switched them to 2% or 1% when my youngest was about 3. They didn't notice. I don't drink milk (although I loved it as a kid). Both kids are under 50% for weight but they are also small and both families were slim as kids so genetics play a big part in that for us.

No, I don't agree. But then I prefer full-fat raw milk in moderation.
I'll drink water before touching 1% or 2%.

I always buy whole milk, and interestingly there is some newer research saying whole milk is possibly a better choice, and in fact is linked with LOWER rates of obesity... Full fat Paradox

My kids drink 2% but I have thrown in a 1% and they didn't notice so I might switch to 1%. I gave them skim milk and you would have thought I gave them water. They definitely noticed and were not happy.

I drink skim milk and really like it. I grew up on whole milk. When my kids were young I bought 2% for them. When my dh buys milk for himself he always buys whole...I can't drink it as it's just too "thick" for me.

DD and I drink skim. DH drinks 2%.
Wben DD was little, she drank 2% (never had whole) for a few months. I can't remember when I switched her to skim, but I know she little. Her ped had no problem with her drinking 2% or skim instead of whole.

I think homo milk is disgusting. It's too thick. I prefer skim since it's the thinnest, but we have been buying 2% lately. I may move us down to 1%. I don't see the difference in flavour between the percentages... it's all milk flavoured.

I only buy 2% or whole. I most definitely can tell the difference between all the milks. I will not drink 1% or skim.

We don't use a lot of milk but 1% is what I buy. I started using it in my early 20's and cannot drink whole or 2% anymore. I sometimes buy whole for recipes.

We drink 1%. My kids are big milk drinkers. My ds is super slim so I tried to switch to whole milk last summer to fatten him up. No one would drink it they said it was too thick.

My dh and I grew up drinking whole milk, but neither of us like it any more. We both prefer 1-2%. The kids like skim best. We both think skim is white colored water. In any case, I really don't care for milk any more. About the only time I have it is to dunk Oreos.
