What backpack does your college age "child" use for their laptop?
We have just begun to look so any and all suggestions are welcome! If it makes a difference it's for our dd.
TIA!

I splurged ($90ish) and bought a backpack for my son at REI. He had just gotten a new Mac and I wanted good protection. After two years he's STILL raving about the pack. Seriously, he should make a commercial.
I just texted him for the brand. It's Sunday morning, though, so I might not get back to you for several hours...

I loved the one I had in college. DD used it for a couple of years afterward and I just used it again as yesterday. With the exception of a broken plastic piece, it has held up really well. It is something like this: SwissGear backpack

Nothing special, they just go with whatever is popular and they like. ds was using a Nike backpack throughout most of college. My high school senior just this year got a very similar one from Nike as well.

I'm not in college but work in an industry (NASCAR) where pretty much all of us use a backpack about 300 days a year. We're probably 90% carrying Ogio brand.

DD bought herself a "satchel" of sorts on Etsy. She loves it! It came with a shoulder strap as well. Laptop Case

The best one is going to be the one that actually gets used. So pick one she likes style wise. College students are much less bound by "what everyone else is using" than high school students.
It seems a lot of our students prefer a messenger bag or more traditional business looking bag for their laptops than a backpack type. Just a protective neoprene sleeve is also popular

Most of the college/late high school kids that I know that carry a backpack choose either JanSport or Swiss Gear.

Thanks ladies! We looked a little yesterday. We saw the Swiss Gear one. I'm not sure it was the same model, but dd liked all of the pockets on it.

My Dd bought a North Face. It is teal and she loves it. She is in downtown Atlanta and walks everywhere. She claims it is perfect. I think she spent $65 on it.

Both have a Northface. DS is a college sophomore and has had his about two years and it still looks new. I believe his is the men's Recon. I just got DD one to replace a 1.5 year old Vera Bradley backpack that was ripped all over the bottom and strap from normal use. Hers is the woman's Borealis. They both fit 15 inch laptops, but DS's will hold a thicker 15 inch than DD's as her backpack is scaled smaller than his.

We also got our DD the Swiss Gear one, and it has held up well. I found it at a good price at Sam's Club.

Dd has a black Kipling bag. It's sturdy and roomy and works well with her daily commute to and from Manhattan. It replaced her Vera Bradley bag.

If she is looking for durability I would recommend Oakley. Some of their back packs are quite rugged looking, but I got one of their basic black ones and it is a tank! I have used it through 5 years in the military and 6 years in college and it shows very little signs of wear. I think the bottom is going to eventually wear out before the zipper ever breaks! (Anyone else HATE crappy zippers they put on so many bags?!)
ETA: To clarify, I've only had it for 6 years, but I used it for military as well as college.

I'm a teacher and I use this backpack www.jansport.com/shop/en/jansport-us/30-percent-off-sale/big-student-tdn7s--1?cm_sp=APRHP-_-saleslider-_-product3 with a REALLY OLD REI brand sleeve with a front pocket that holds cords and cards and USB drives. The sleeve fits in the front part of the backpack. There are 2 full size pockets at the back (my binder and book and purse go in the very back one that is larger, the laptop in the sleeve goes in the front one) then a sideways pocket (I use this for pens, pencils, hair ties, whatever), then a front pocket (this holds my calculator and a space keeper box with poster markers and a water bottle), then a sideways pocket on the very front (I use this for pads, cough drops, etc). It stores a TON of stuff!

When I went back to college, I bought a Jansport backpack at Best Buy. I think it was around $40, it has a separate padded compartment (which included a removable padded laptop sleeve), and they came in 5 or 6 different colors. It's 2.5 years old now and seriously still looks brand new. I also like that it can be fully loaded with books, laptop, food, water, etc., and it's still comfortable to wear and carry.

Figure out how many/how big textbooks she will carry at one time, then make the bag big enough to fit them.

We bought DD a Vera Bradley laptop sleeve. Then she puts that in the front pocket of her LL Bean super duluxe book pack.

I hate wearing backpacks, so I bought a lovely messenger bag instead.

DD has used a VB for the most part. She has a laptop sleeve that she uses when she wants to just carry a large tote.

My daughter has many. She has a book bag that looks like a very large purse with a padded pouch for the laptop. She has a back pack that has a padded section in it for the laptop. She has a laptop case (just big enough for laptop not made to carry books) that she uses. She just bought a really nice laptop case that is like a large briefcase that has pockets for books. Depending on her mood and how many books she has to carry for the day and other personal stuff. She actually doesn't carry a purse when she has her big bags. she puts everything in one bag.

At the UA I pretty much only see Dakine and Jansport. Timbuktu messenger bags are also big.
Most of the girls though use work totes, Michael Kors, Coach, Fossil. That's a recent thing the past year or so that I've noticed become more on trend around here.

My youngest is in middle school not college. He uses a net book and we bought him a Timbuk2 messenger bag. LinkFrankly, the bag cost more than I wanted to spend. However, he's been using it for two years now and it's showing minimal wear. More importantly, it's protecting his net book.

I don't know the name of mine, but I bought it on clearance at Target a few summers ago. The thing I like about it is that there is a section between the two shoulder straps that basically crosses your back just below your neck. (The little hang tab/carry section is sort of integrated up there-- the cross strap kind of creates that hole instead of just a canvas loop.)
Anyhow, it makes the backpack so much more comfortable than if it were just shoulder straps; I think it helps distribute the weight better. And any time I buy a backpack now, I will look for it as a feature.
