I have always colored mandalas using Crayola pencils, and I have always like them and the color selection well enough, but a few weeks ago, I decided to bite the bullet and buy a set of Prismacolor pencils with a Michael's coupon.
I do the same thing. I have a mandala coloring book and use Crayola colored pencils in it. For whatever reason I really love mandala images. I even build kaleidoscopes with a specific types of mirror configurations that make mandala images when you look through them. I find the coloring to be both meditative and calming. I don't really do anything with finished pages, just move on to the next. It's really about the process for me, not the finished product. DBF and I were talking about it Thursday night and he said that he can see how coloring can be therapeutic. It's a calm and quiet kind of work, uses repetitive motion, involves color, there is an element of power because you are choosing which color goes where, and you can let your mind wander when absorbed in the task.

That is so beyond cool!
I just love hearing about the amazing creativity of people and the different ways they use that creativity.
I spent some time this evening looking at the coloring gallery on Joanna Basford's site, and holy moly! People color her pages in ways I would never have thought of. I am excited to dive into the book. I haven't colored any pages in it yet because I want to print them first in case I ever want to do some of them with different colors, techniques, etc.

Have to click to see bigger, but First one is Sharpies, and it's from a color-by-number book that I posted a link to earlier in the thread. The second one is one of the free downloads from Johanna Basford on card stock with Staedtler ultra fine markers third one is from a Mandela coloring book, done in markers, mostly Sharpie

Awesome pics. I have a couple of sheets done but I can never seem to get them to post correctly. I find it very relaxing and I usually do it when I am watching TV. It also keeps my hands busy so I am not snacking while being a couch potato.
I wasn't going to say anything but can't keep my mouth shut. Why the heck do people come on a thread about something they don't enjoy, have no intention of trying or think is silly, just to bash it? Another mystery in the story of my life.

I don't necessarily think it's people's intent to bash, but it is how it comes across. Doesn't bother me, though, because the coloring keeps me calm haha.

As others have said this isn't a "trend" for me. I have never stopped coloring since I was young. I often buy kid's coloring books and use crayons - my fave coloring books have always been Barbie because she has great clothes to color. I am happy though to see more detailed (adult) coloring books trending now though...gives me much more options! Here is one I did today. It was so pretty out that I just sat out on the patio and colored with my pencils.

My mother was way ahead of the game with this trend. I can recall she had her own coloring book that she used to color in any time we wanted to color. We'd be coloring Sesame Street or The Muppets or whatever and she would be coloring in this: Gingham Girls Color BookOf course, coloring books geared toward adults or older kids/teens have been around for awhile now, but back then she just found one book she particularly liked of the ones offered for kids and bought it for herself. I had that coloring book and I loved it! Awww... so nostalgic

Both of these were done with Steadler pencils. I have done more work on the garden one since this picture was taken, once I am done, I will post another. I have decided to keep them all in the book.
My flash kind of takes away the color...

Thank you everyone for sharing your pictures and interest. My new coloring books will arrive from Amazon on Wed., and as I gave away all my colored pencils I'll just have to go buy more.

This is one trend I just don't get. But have fun. ~Lauren~-- (and anyone else who doesn't 'get' it)... these are a couple quotes from the Stress Relieving Animal Designs book that was posted farther down in this thread-- these are the 'directions' listed for how to use the book, which I think include a couple great points: - Break out your crayons or colored pencils
- Turn off your phone, tablet, computer, whatever
- Stop thinking about your job, your credit score, your reputation with your co-workers, your goals, your waistline, your retirement savings, etc.
- Remind yourself that coloring is like dancing, or being alive. It doesn't have a point, it is the point.
- Find your favorite page in the book. This is the beginning.
- Start coloring.
- If you notice at any point that you are having fun, forgetting your worries, daydreaming freely, feeling more creative, excitable, curious, delighted, relaxed, or any combination thereof, breathe deeply and take a moment to enjoy it. Then, gently return your attention to coloring.
- When you are satisfied or don't feel like it anymore, stop.
It's like meditation-- it's fun, a great stress-reliever or relaxer, and helps turn your mind 'off' so you can decompress. It's the same for me with doodling, art journaling, etc. but just in a different form. For other people, it might be golf, video games, reading, etc. (I have a couple pages finished; I'll post them later tonight or tomorrow-- thanks to everyone who posted so far for the inspiration!!) ETA: whoops-- I should have read the entire thread first, lol!! FYI #1: I printed the sample pages from Joanna BAsford's website that Patter posted, and thought they were too tiny for my eyes to handle. So I enlarged them on our copier at work-- now they should be a bit easier for me to see (and color in). FYI #2: while I don't draw my own pictures, I do doodle, so the picture I have finished has a lot of extra details that I added to it.

Another good reason to color is that it takes my mind off of my major back pain that I have 24/7 that I have no meds to help take the pain away.
I love the relaxing part of this hobby.

My daughter is coloring to keep her mind off of her back pain and spinal fusion surgery that is coming up next week. It truly helps her a ton! Praying you feel better and glad you have coloring to help you too!

This is so cool! I have coloring books at my house for when my friends' kids come over, but I've been known to color with them! I would love to do this! I'm going to have to look into it. Do any stores carry them or do they have to be ordered online (thinking instant gratification here...lol)?
The only thing more exciting than this would be adult Spirograph!!!! LOL

I've seen the books in a couple different places in Michael's: you can check the book/magazine section up at the front, and also back near the paint / canvases, etc. in the 'art' section. There are some Dover publications, as well as some other publishers. Most recently, I've seen them on end-cap displays, so they're more visible.

Sorry if this was asked before and I missed it but do you need the fancy colored pencils or will Crayola do ok?

depends on your preference... I have Crayola ones (24 pencils) and I'm looking for something 'softer' because it hurts my wrist to press down on them to get the depth of color I want. (and I want more colors, lol!) But other people use Crayola ones and love using them. Other people have talked about using markers, Patter has used watercolor paint (if your paper can withstand it), gel pens, etc...
I think I'm going to break out my trusty 72-color box of Crayons, next.

Sorry if this was asked before and I missed it but do you need the fancy colored pencils or will Crayola do ok? Crayola pencils are just fine! Or kids' markers. You ou can spend big $ on fancy pencils and markers and pens, or you can go with your kids' school supplies. The beauty of coloring is that it is just for you, and you can do it however is relaxing for you.

I've been coloring one of those free files someone listed on the other thread, using colored pencils and Sharpie markers.
So pretty! I have a small collection of colored Sharpies. Thanks for the idea!
