since Saturday night I've had a scratchy throat and dry cough. Last night tried nyquil and coughed all night. Went to bed early tonight and took mucinex. Well here I am coughing my brains out again keeping everyone up. It's just a dry tickle but I can't stop. Tons of water, cough drops, propped up. Any advice? I need sleep! !!

Have you started a new med? Particularly a blood pressure med?

zinc lozenges have been working for me. I find when I lay down at night I get a dry cough too. I also find that blowing my nose sometimes helps as well...sometimes nasel drip causes coughing I was told.

Started a med about 2 months ago . This started after being outside a few hours Saturday night. Sounds like an allergy issue. I've heard this year is supposed to be rough for allergies.

I was about to come and post about the same thing! I found this wiki and done the cough drop thing. I've tried Delsym with only minor improvements. I think mine could be allergies since the itchiness has gotten worse since I've been opening the windows and the trees in my backyard are now full of leaves. I just took some children's antihistamine and I'm about ready to go downstairs and get some honey. Ugh. This is so irritating. It's 11:30 pm and I have to get up at 6am. www.wikihow.com/Soothe-an-Itchy-Throat(Sorry. I can't seem to link from my phone. )

I was going to suggest honey as well; that's the only thing I can think of that you're likely to have in your house.
When I get that cough, all I can do is keep a glass of water with a straw by my bed and try to drink when there's a tickle instead of coughing.
Hope you feel better soon.

Try a humidifier at night to add some moisture into the air. And try sleeping on a slight incline, you may have post nasal drip irritating your throat.

Good luck. Mine started around March 25th or 26th. I am still trying to get rid of it. It is better and I don't cough all night anymore but it is still there and is very annoying. At least now it is at a point where everyone isn't looking at me wondering why I am out of my house with that nasty cough.

Did you start lisinopril by chance? It can take some time to build up in your system before you'll notice the dry cough. Ace inhibitors are the class of blood pressure meds. That's my first guess... 2nd.... Allergies

It sounds like allergies. Post nasal drip will cause that tickly cough that you just can't resolve. Normally I would recommend a Mucinex, but try taking a Sudafed. Mucinex will thin out mucus, while Sudafed will dry it out. If you are prone to sinus infections, I wouldn't take the Sudafed for long. Maybe a day or two. But since Mucinex didn't help, Sudafed is worth a try. Sometimes I alternate to rev up my system. And a day of drying up the mucus can help, especially with an irritated throat. If that doesn't work, I would go to the dr to make sure it's not something else.

I know this sounds crazy but rub Vicks Vapo rub on the bottoms of your feet and put socks on. It works, promise!

I've tried the vicks before. Never worked for me. Guess I'll get Sudafed today. I swear I might have gotten 2 hours broken sleep

I don't know if you live where pollen is high (as I do) but I have to keep the windows closed and stay indoors as much as possible. Drink a lot of water, and try having a teaspoon of honey when the coughing won't stop. It's the irritation in my nose and throat that triggers my dry cough. I was just reading that the pollen count is going from high to "very high" this weekend.

Like others have said, it could be allergies. Some blood pressure medications have that side effect. It could also be acid reflux. If it doesn't go away, see your doctor. I hope you get some relief soon!

That is what I thought as well until speaking with the pharmacist ,after coughing nightly for two weeks trying to find what I could take with the bp med. Doc changed med and cough stopped within days.

Toprol is a beta blocker, not an ACE inhibitor, so I'd go with post-nasal drip causing the cough. If it doesn't clear up with a couple days of Sudafed, head to the doctor. Just to let you know, Sudafed can raise your blood pressure.

A few weeks ago, I spent the weekend outside and found myself with the same type of cough. After 3 restless nights I went to CVS a and bought their brand of gel-cap cough suppressant. Holy cow - I slept so soundly!! I'm tempted to use them even when I dont have a cough, lol. Go to CVS and buy them!

Delsym works for me. I had that same tickly cough. I finally went to the Dr. She said I had post nasal drip that I couldn't feel or see but she could. So Mucinex during the day, Delsym and Benadryl at night. Worked like a charm

I know this sounds crazy but rub Vicks Vapo rub on the bottoms of your feet and put socks on. It works, promise! I had a little virus last month and was left with a nagging cough. I was desperate and tried the Vicks. It really works!!
