Regenia Phlange's thread about giving up soda has inspired me. Who would like to do a little support group and give up soda together?
I am thinking we can start Wednesday. Gives us time to have our last fix. I currently am addicted to Diet Coke. I drink at least four 44oz. fountain drinks a day. Anyone in?

Oh geez, I can´t believe I´m saying YES to this! That´s so scary, but if not now, when?. Ok I´m in, wednesday sounds good I don´t think I have any stressful situations that could make me need my fix. And I am also an addict to diet coke, I´m going to miss it so much well probably not, but you know what I mean Oh edited to add that I am currently drinking less than a litter a day, which is way less than the 4 litters I used to drink about a month ago.

What is the plan for quitting? I'm in but want to do it gradually (like over the course of a week).

Good luck! I'm not ready to give my lunch soda addiction up just yet. This time of year is way to stressful to give up my daily soother. I *could* take up smoking I suppose

I gave up Diet Coke 2 years, nine months and 10 days ago. I could easily drink a 6 pack a day or multiple fountain drinks. Giving it up was the first change I made when I decided to get healthy and start losing weight. The first few weeks were hard, like really hard, but after that, I didn't miss it at all. I filled the carbonation void with seltzer water/club soda. My hubby still drinks soda (diet coke and Dr. Pepper) and I'll have a tiny sip of his diet coke every now and then and it tastes horrible to me! Good luck to you all....don't give up!!
By the way, I was a long time lurker at the old forum and decided I'd actually participate now.

I will cheer you on!!! I quit soda cold turkey 3 years ago, this October. It was the best thing I ever did. I will not lie, it was hard. Keep the advil handy because I fought migraines for about 3 weeks but if you can push through that, then you are golden! I lost 5 pounds in the first month. I had clearer thoughts and didn't feel that fog in my brain anymore.
I do still crave it sometimes, and I have been known to smell the kids soda. But at the end of the day I ask myself is it worth it to go back down that rabbit hole and the answer is a resounding no!
GOOD LUCK Everyone!!!

You can do it Ladies! Cut back or cold turkey, do what you think you are capable of, but either way it's an improvement.
I used to drink 4 Cokes a day. Now, I couldn't even drink an entire soda if I tried...too sickening sweet. I don't even like soda anymore.
Good Luck!

I didn't read her thread, but I've been preaching about the side effects of soda for 10 years on here. I used to be a HUGE soda drinker. I began my morning with a huge bottle of diet coke and continued it throughout the day. It was my source of caffeine. What I didn't realize was how bad it was for my body and for my bones. I broke a few bones and finally realized it was probably due to the soda. I stopped it entirely and my bone density returned to a high score after only a few months of stopping. It wasn't too hard to stop and after about a month it tasted like poison if I took a sip.
Do your bones, your teeth and your body a favor and skip it entirely. It makes you crave carbs and sweets and food in general, while wiping your bone density out. It's crap! Good luck to all of you quitting it. I only drink water (and have for 10 years!), and an occasional seltzer (thanks to my sodastream!).
ETA: I stopped cold turkey. I got headaches and took Excedrin for a while. Drink tons of water while you're stopping. Cold turkey worked best for me, and after about 2 weeks, you'll be done with any craving for it!

I quit several years ago as a New Years resolution. Cold turkey. I have on occasion had a soda and was surprised at how horrible it tasted.
I'll be supportive of all you brave gals! You can do it!

You can do it!
I had a terrible Diet Coke habit - those one dollar, large fountain drinks at McDonalds were my downfall. I never had issues with/without caffeine - I could drink two cans before bed and not be affected. I just loved the taste of Diet Coke over any other beverage.
I always gave soda up for Lent, but had such cravings and would crack open a can at 12:01am Easter Sunday (hanging my head).
Not sure what made me decide to quit cold turkey in November - maybe it was all those soda warnings that people posted on facebook, or maybe it was because of benem posting about kicking the habit on 2peas - all that I know is that I woke up one day and decided to stop.
When my dd and I traveled to Mexico in June, I did voluntarily climb off the wagon and drank Diet Coke (Coke Lights) there, as I didn't want to have alcohol all the time and I was leery of the water. The soda lacked that appeal it usually held over me. I had no problems switching back to water once we were home. I can't say that I'll never, ever have another soda (sometimes it's good in a mixed drink, or 7up will settle my stomach, or a vending machine is the only available option) but I'm 99.9% over soda!
Drink lots of water. Good luck!

Oh Shizzle, what the heck? But Wednesday is my birthday; I'm going to tentatively shoot for Thursday. How's that for commitment? I'm a MAJOR Diet Coke addict. I could drink 12 cans a day.

Ok, I've waffled back and forth a few times as I read everyone's posts, but I think I'm in. I have been a Pepsi addict for years, probably all my life. I can remember having the glass knee high bottles in the fridge as a small child, and the weekly trips to return the bottles and sliding the crates down the little chute at the grocery store. I have been trying to quit for years but I get so ill without it. Since I passed 30 I have put on about 25 lbs that I can't seem to drop and keep off. I have been eating salad one or 2 meals a day and keeping to lean proteins and healthy stuff all summer, and when I went to the Dr. last Friday I had gained 3 lbs in the past month! I'm down to one 12 oz can on a good day, 3 or 4 on a bad one. I had 2 today. I'll allow myself one more tomorrow and I'm done.

I had a serious diet coke addiction and gave it up 4 years ago. Unfortunately, 6 months later, I started drinking Dr. Pepper. I gave up all pop as a New Years resolutions this year. I was doing really good until last week. Most pop tastes nasty to me now except for warm cherry coke. I am not going to let DD have that kind anymore.
Just a little advice if anyone is going cold turkey - cold turkey is the only thing that works for me - have some excedrin migraine on hand for the headaches. It really helps. The headaches last 2-4 days then they are gone. If you can make it 3-4 weeks without any, it starts tasting really gross. In the meantime, I find if I have something like tea or water infused with some fruit to help with the cravings.

I quit cold turkey years ago, I figured out it was the fizz that I loved. I switched to tonic water or seltzer with lime. I lost 25 lbs in 3 months and took the $$ that I would have spent on soda and saved it as a reward--$100 was collected quickly--just in a matter of a few weeks!
I occasionally sip a Coke when I get a migraine, but other than that, it now tastes disgusting to me!
Good Luck everyone!

By the way, I was a long time lurker at the old forum and decided I'd actually participate now. Glad you're participating!!! Can I ask if the weight loss happened quickly? I know that weight loss is not an easy thing. My weight fluctuates horribly and I am so mad at myself. Since school has gotten out in early June I have gained 12 pounds. It is the most ridiculous thing. Last week I started walking and watching the snacks. I cannot believe this has happened. I need to lose the weight before school starts again 6 weeks. Thanks for the welcome! I actually lost 30 pounds in the first 2 1/2 months after giving up soda. The soda restriction was pretty much my main change, but I did start to exercise a little bit and drank TONS of water. I also made sure I didn't eat after 7:00 p.m. About two years after I gave up soda, I was down 125 pounds!! I did make other changes to my eating habits along the way, but the soda was really the only thing I completely eliminated from my diet. I still "cheat", but soda is not one of my cheats. Like others mentioned, I got a Soda Stream and LOVE it!! I don't add anything to it, just drink the carbonated water. Don't give up....YOU CAN and WILL DO IT!!!!

I'm in! I gave up Diet Coke over two years ago (a 25 year habit) and replaced it with fizzy water from my SodaStream. What I learned was I craved the bubbles more than the caffeine or the taste. But...I still get a soda at restaurants. I did really well with that for the first year and a half....drinking 2-3 cups per MONTH.
But in the last few months I've found myself stopping at McD's for their $1 drinks. So I've upped it to 2-3 large drinks per week. Not bad, but too much
If I drink it now I feel horrible. Sluggish. Headaches. But despite that, I still crave it occasionally...especially on hot summer days. So, I'm totally in. Starting this minute! No more soda!
You all can totally do this!!!

I am so glad that we are doing this together. . Now if I am a raging loon I can blame you all! I am going to go cold turkey. Otherwise I would cut in half every week until I was done, but I know me. It has to be cold turkey.

I gave up my Diet Mt Dew 8 days ago (cold turkey), and I miss it SO MUCH, but I'm determined to keep it up. They say it takes 21 days to create a habit, so I'm hoping after 3 weeks I will miss it less, and learn to love water. It's not like I even drank a ton of it -- I would have one can during the day at work, and on weekends I would have 2 or 3 cans a day.
I'm not saying I will never drink pop again...when I go to the movie, I refuse to drink water with my popcorn, lol!

I don't, won't drink coffee, it tastes nasty to me. I use either soda or half of a 5 hour energy. Not all the time but there are times I need it. Ds15 decided I'm addicted to soda. I'm not, I'll have one or two a week or maybe one every few weeks. Ds offered to make a deal with me and quit together for a month - with time off for out to dinner or such. On one hand I didn't want to because I'm not addicted and I don't want him to think he can hold me hostage. OTOH I want him to be willing to listen if we think he's doing something unsafe. After a week I decided to go for it. I've done well except for that one time at Chuck E. Cheese, when i had 3 cups... but... it was Chuck E. Cheese! LOL

If you're not quite ready to quit cold turkey, how about cutting out all soda consumption at home and only as a treat when you're out? (that's what I'm doing in hopes of eventually having water when we're out to dinner)

Add me to the group on the sidelines cheering you all on! About 3.5 weeks ago I drastically reduced my fountain coke intake from 2-3 per day to 2 per week max. This past week I had one the whole week and didn't even realize it until I was looking through my log on MyFitness Pal. I know what works for me and that is to wean myself gradually. I drink coffee, tea, and water. For tea I brew a sweet tea or iced tea in the Keurig and take it to work with me. While it isn't cold turkey I am quite pleased with myself I wish you all the best of luck
