I have what looks like a pencil mark on my chin. I'm pretty sure it is a dark hair growing way under the skin. It's not raised, like a normal ingrown hair would be. It also doesn't hurt.
I have been exfoliating every day with no luck to set it free.
I haven't tried to dig it out because I can't see a sure beginning or end to it.
I'm half afraid that it will just pop free one day at work and be six inches long.
And I'm half afraid that it will never come out and just grow into some frightening hair mass under the skin.
Any one ever deal with something like this? Any advice?

I'd probably try exfoliating that skin to see if the end of the hair pops out. I just saw this video on YouTube and I wouldn't want this to happen: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2e82T_7h2OU

My mom had one of those for years. She messed with and picked at it multiple times a day every day for over 20 years. Then she told me exactly what you fear... it finally came free one day while she was at work. She said it was all curled around itself and when she unwound it it was at least 10 inches long.

I have no advice, but that video posted intrigues and horrifies me at the same time!

If you lived in my house, you would be pounced on and picked at until it was out. It wouldn't matter if you ended up with a bloody chin.
I've only ever had an ingrown hair about twice. I worried, like you, what would it be like when it sprung free. Prior to meeting my husband, my brother-in-law had one that was huge. The stuff that legends are made of and YouTube videos.
I think this is something we are going to need ongoing updates on. Good luck.
P.S. Mine were not on my chin.

Are you sure it's not a vein?

Another thing for me to have to worry about! I get a lot of chin hairs.

Are you sure it's not a vein? Nope, not sure. I just never noticed it before now. Could very well be a vein. I would much rather it be a vein.

Thanks to marzbar71 I just watched a half hour of zit and cyst popping videos. Like Butterfly Momma, I'm intrigued and horrified!

You could make a note to ask your doctor about it the next time you are in. Maybe it is something they can excise for you, with sterile instruments and a stitch or two if need be. (Or, if your insurance will allow it, make a special trip into dermatology. My out of pocket isn't too bad, so if it really bothered me, I'd go in, but I know not everyone can do that.)

It could be a vein & if it is actually a hair, a doctor could get it out, surely?

I would go to a beauty therapist/aestheticien. She will be able to see with a magnifying lamp and if necessary extract it quite efficiently. If it is a hair it could die and disintegrate under the skin and that's not nice

We need some details, please.
