I've thought about it, but have never had the courage. I've never colored my hair and don't have any gray. My friends hate me for it

Question - those that have brightly colored hair or streaks or ends dyed... what is your occupation? I know it never work any job I have had, and I usually see it on teens or sahms, hairdressers, or performers...never in an office or teaching etc. So just curious what jobs truly let you be you. I think places that let you be you - sound cool. Thanks. I have white/blonde hair now, but have had bright colours in the past and will again, and I work in a research lab.

leslie132 - Please don't wait until you're "thin enough". Life is passing you by now. Nobody ever thinks they're rich enough or thin enough to do what they really want to do. You are 100% right. I go back and forth. But my love of this fad doesn't. I have wanted a wild color for a long time. I wanted shorter hair as well. And people tried saying not to short hair as well. I remember a thread on the original 2 Peas where someone asked about short hair.....I was amazed at the NAYS it received. I did go short.... And I love it. I imagine I would love this as well. Funny story.....I read this post and after I commented I asked my 10 year old son what he would think. He is at the stage where parents can be embarrassing . I asked about the color and he said "Mom, in my opinion I think it will make you even more beautiful. And if you want a rainbow of color instead of just one that would be cool as well"! That's all the approval I need!

My husband's exact words when he saw my hair for the first time were "Your hair is effing awesome!"

impearia you rock those glasses with pigtails! The hair color is just the extra icing! Thanks! I was trying to take a selfie with my eldest daughter and she leapt out of frame to say "hi." to a friend...selfie fail. I do love that pic though. The best is when I pick my daughter up at school and the kids all love my hair, lol.

I think places that let you be you - sound cool. Thanks. When I lived in the U.S. and worked as a veterinary nurse I had black hair with magenta streaks..no one cared. This was quite a few years ago now though. Now I live in Australia and I see it all the time... there is a teller at my bank who has bright coloured streaks in her hair, and it looks good on her...she has to be 50+. Lots of shop assistants here have wild coloured hair, department store makeup artists, people who work at Lush, clothing area in department stores etc. There was a teacher at my daughter's primary school who used to change his fringe (bangs for you American types) pretty regularly from one wild colour to another...orange, blue, fluro green...so yes, people do this with normal jobs. Do some jobs frown on it? Sure...but plenty don't seem to care anymore.

I am irritated by the opinion that because my hair is not "normal" color that I am somehow less professional at work. My professionalism at work should be judged on my business decisions, how I treat my employees, the level of customer service that I give to my residents...not the color of my hair. I treat people with kindness and consideration and I am always taking classes to improve my skill set.

I don't get "inappropriate". I can see not thinking it's something you want for yourself, but how is it inappropriate??? Inappropriate has connotations of ethical or moral issues. Colored hair is in no way an ethical or moral decision.

However if I showed up at work with non-tradional hair color, in the least I'd be told to change it immediately, at most I'd be fired. I'm a nurse and for sure that is not what any employer would have considered professional. Although my hair color has nothing to do with how well I do I my job. Until recently visible tattoos were a big no-no too, but that's been more relaxed over the last few years.
