Went to college with a girl whose last name was Screws.
Poor thing.......I worked the switchboard and hated to have to deal with the name.

I don't know anything about the character, but with this as its definition, it's still not a name I would personally choose. "minx noun \ˈmiŋ(k)s\ : a sexually attractive and playful woman who often causes trouble" I thought I would have heard all the "2 countries separated by a common language" things by now, but I have never heard this definition of 'minx' before. Now I see why you guys are not amused by the name. In New Zealand, a minx is a scamp, a scallywag; and it's not unusual to hear someone call their little girl a minx. A little girl who sneaks up behind you and taps you then hides as if they hadn't done it - that's a minx. Or she wraps her arms around you and whispers "I love you mummy", then asks for another piece of cake - that's a minx. Growing up in Canada with British parents and 3 sisters, minx would be used in the same way as your examples KiwiJo.

I thought that Madge was Barbie's friend (way back in the day of the 1960's).
I do not understand the creative ways of spelling of names and I don't get the naming a child an either/or boy/girl name such as Jamie or Kelly.
Each to their own. You're right! It never made sense to me, and I had the doll. Wasn't Madge also the name of the women in the commercial "you're soaking in it" dish soap manicure something? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ? My trivia brain isn't connecting today... Midge was Barbie's friend, not Madge. I still have my Midge doll.

don't watch the show, but according to dictionary.com, the definition of minx is: a pert, impudent, or flirtatious girl... so I would think of it the same way KiwiJo and bc2ca would. I think it's a cute nickname for a girl, actually. (and for the record, I am from the US. I do read a lot of early 20th century fiction, though, so more 'old-fashioned' or 'less-used' words like this one are par for the course, for me.)

I always liked the name Bunny. Like Bunny Williams. OMG, no. In my 20s I was sharing a house with a another girl named Janet, when I first met her she said "cell me Bunny, everyone does" and my first reaction was "oh hell no!" As far as I was concerned there was no way I was calling another grown woman "Bunny". I never did, might be cute when you are a 5yo but not for much longer than that.

I worked with a pretty young lady named Vixen! She got so many jokes and odd looks from people that I bet she asked herself often "what were my parents thinking"!

Each to their own. You don't get naming a kid Kelly or Jamie just because it could go either way? Lolol this is the tops for stupid reasons to complain about names. My cousins Jamie (boy) and Jamie (girl) and I (Kelly) won't invite you to our birthday parties I guess. Eyeroll x eleventy billion PS just to blow your mind even more, DH is named Kelly It's like our moms just didn't get the memo @z*G did you used to live near Chambersburg, PA?

I use it in an exasperated, eyes heavenward, letting out a sigh, knowing smile on my face, you little scamp type of situation. For me, "minx" encompasses the realm between cute scamp and non-slutty flirt.

According the the urban dictionary, it basically means slut. But like you said, things have different meanings in different countries. Willie (while not my favorite) is a relatively common shortening of William here. But if I remember correctly, in England it means a man's privates. ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/JvSt42CUoZ9LG952aAaF.jpg) No, that's my uncle! ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/c2qi57qoGpXKdFvBtXdt.jpg) We have the same issue in Newfoundland with 'Peter'.

Years ago I knew a girl named Velvet and another named Valentine. Not related, both sweet as could be, their names seemed to work for them. Ahh...Velvet Jones.. ![](http://l.yimg.com/os/publish-images/ivy/2013-09-09/a27ead0f-00c8-48b7-9c72-1d223b3a9d88_murphy-velvet-jones.jpg)

@z*G did you used to live near Chambersburg, PA? No, sorry! I'm from the Midwest and I've never heard of Chambersburg. I used to know two Kellys who were married to each other there. They had two daughters, each with a middle name of Kelly. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

My son Bobby's full name is Robert. When we moved to our current area, Robbie is the popular nickname so he was the only Bobby. Then in highschool he was in a class with a female Bobby who's full name is Robin. Then in the theatre young company he is in, someone nicknamed him Babs and he is known that in his circle. I was so confused on why so all i could think of was Barbara Streisand. While watching Agents of Shield, a female Bobby character showed up. A bit later she gets called by her full name Barbara. Then it all clicked in. And now, he's getting called Babs at highshcool. Nicknames can be weird. But he likes his Babs!

Yep, to me it just brings to mind Minnie the Minx from the Beano, unless it was said in a Leslie Philips voice.

I know a man whose name is Dick Driver. The first time I had meeting with him, I was laughing to myself about his awesome porn name. He seems like a nice enough guy, and he is actually pretty good looking. The funniest part is that he is Dick Driver The THIRD! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) I do wonder how he made it through high school.
