Who knew my laundry practices were so supported by the "experts"? That's my exact laundry schedule.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who didn't know you could wash a pillow. I buy new ones pretty much every year. Yikes!

Phew, that is my schedule too. Here on 2peas I often feel like the resident savage knuckle dragger because my housekeeping is less rigorous than the majority and I would eat a lot of what others find abhorrent!

Who knew my laundry practices were so supported by the "experts"? That's my exact laundry schedule. I know, right! I wash bath towels after every use. It totally skeeves me out to think about re using them. And I wash our sheets every week. DH gets hot at night and I feel like he sweats too much on the sheets. And I use one kitchen towel a day before I throw it down to be washed every night.
Come to think of it, I wash everything after a single use, including all our clothes.

Same here! I can't use a bath towel twice and I have to throw the boys' hand towel in the clothes hamper each night because I know at some point in the day they didn't wash their hands properly.
I wash sheets and bedding every two weeks though. Also all of the boys' stuffties get washed the same time as bedding. Thank goodness for a large capacity washer!!

My bath mat gets washed seasonally. I never walk on it with street shoes. I think it's pretty clean and takes up too much space in the washing machine.

I launder my towels after two uses. I change out my bathroom hand towels every couple of days, kitchen towels everyday, and sheets every week. I wash whenever I have a full load of something and not a minute before. It seems I am ahead of the curve.

2 peas is the biggest bunch of germaphobes I've ever seen in my life. It's quite fascinating. I often wonder if scrapbooking attracted germaphobes, or if 2 peas discussions made everyone paranoid. I just saw this interesting articlecome across my news feed this morning. You need more dirt in your life people. Says freebird as she scrapes chicken shit off her shoes.

I'm with them on everything except kitchen towels and maybe hand towels.
Kitchen towels may be washed once a week but a new one is out daily if not more often, and the old one is in the laundry basket. Ewww to switching them once a week??
Hand towels in the guest bath I switch pretty much every other day or when a guest has been over. Daily if anyone is sick. Upstairs we all have our own color so I may be more lax, as in when ever the kids put theirs in the laundry. Lol

You are drying off a clean body that just came out of the shower...I usually get 4 uses out of it before I change them out. 4 people in my house (3 of them use 2 towels)...hell no would I wash towels after one use.
That article is pretty much my schedule.

I still don't understand washing bath towels after one use. If you're showered you're coming out clean, right? Short of bodily fluids I can't think of a reason to wash a bath towel after only one use. And I shouldn't be anyway because of the severe drought. It has totally changed my laundry practices.

I'm with freebird. There is zero need to wash bath towels after a single use. Cumulatively the effect of all the unnecessary washing on the environment is horrendous.

I just saw this interesting articlecome across my news feed this morning. You need more dirt in your life people. Says freebird as she scrapes chicken shit off her shoes. Not to mention that we have a real water problem right now, and we need to wash smarter not more often. It's a huge water waste to never use anything ever more than one time. It's really ridiculous. I work with a microbiologist that is frequently contacted for articles like this and she is crazy about infections, disease spread and her home is immaculate. But she is also well aware of weighing out risk. That's a really important part of this equation that gets missed often. There is a lot of risk in not having enough water...is it worse than using a towel 2 or 3 times before you wash it again? Skeeved out or not, we need to start making better judgments and acting like we only have one planet.

I'm not seeing how liking clean towels and bedding makes a person a germaphobe. Because you're washing things that aren't dirty......but 'you' feel need cleaning. I guess some people do it with sheets etc because they like the feel of getting into fresh sheets, who doesn't, but not enough to warrant daily washing imho.

I guess I'm above the norm in some areas and probably below in others. We have a heated towel rack, so towels dry off quickly and stay nice and fluffy. We probably get 4-5 days use out of them before I change them out. I use a style of bathmats similar to hotels where they are sort of like bathmat sized thick towels. I love those because I have 2-3 and I just change them out and wash them with the towels - no rubber backing to worry about and they don't take up more space in the washer than any other towel.
I'm not sure I get only changing out the kitchen towel once a week though unless they are talking about an entirely different type of kitchen towel than I use. I change mine at least daily if not 2-3 times a day. I use the good old fashioned flour sack dishtowels and we use them to dry off hands, clean up spills, dry dishes, etc. I wouldn't use the same one that I've wiped up foods spills with to dry my hands or dishes. If I cook a couple of meals a day, it's not unusual for me to have 2-3 that go into the laundry that night (I don't actually wash them - just put them in a basket until I have a load).
I aim for once a week for sheets and once a month or so for blankets, but I'll admit that it's sort of a "do I have time to do 3 loads right now" kind of thing. There's nothing worse than being busy and then realizing at bedtime that the sheets are in the dryer and the blankets in the washing machine.

Germaphobe - a person with an extreme fear of germs and an obsession with cleanliness. I don't have either so really not a germaphobe just someone who likes clean, dry towels. I wouldn't dream of changing the bedding everyday, that's just over the top. Changing the towels everyday doesn't equal washing the towels everyday, I wait til there's enough for a full load then do them.

I wash my sheets once a week. I am so glad my kids have flown the nest though and only have ONE bed to do.
I put a new hand towel in the bathroom every morning. DH washes his hands in there before he eats and he has icky dirty farmer/rancher hands.
Bath towels get used a couple times, but they must be hung on a rack so air can flow. I hate musty towels. Heaven help the person who leaves their wet towel in a lump on the floor.
I use at least one or two fresh towels in my kitchen every day, but I cook 3 meals daily, but other stuff.
I am not opposed to a little dirt. Having cow or horse poop flung at me on a routine basis - I have learned that it won't kill you. You do need to keep your mouth shut though, when those critters on running by you. Patoooie....pfftt..pfftt....

Please tell me I'm not the only one who didn't know you could wash a pillow. I buy new ones pretty much every year. Yikes! well you can, but they aren't the same when they come out. or maybe that's just true with my $15 pillows? we buy new for Dh and I, wash the kids' a couple times before they need new ones (they aren't as picky, and don't have back issues).

I live on a farm and hate housecleaning. When my kids were little my husband literally smelled like pigs 24/7 (not anymore since we only buy outdoor feeder pigs now). My daughter has food allergies. I'm not buying it.

As for washing towels, my husband has severe eczema and was told by his dr to use towels only once before washing them. That habit has stuck with me too so we wash after each use. I actually don't remember to swap out hand drying towels as often as that schedule says though. Definitely not daily in the kitchen and probably not often enough in the bathrooms either. I'm lucky to wash bathroom rugs once a year, much less twice, but I shake them out and vacuum them every so often.

I am always glad we only have cattle and not hogs. I know exactly what you mean by that smell. I even think a lot of pork from the grocery store tastes like 'confinement' now. I had some pork the other night that was raised outside... doh... it was gooood.
One of my kids has terrible allergies (grass). So I don't know if I buy the 'farm kids don't have allergies' either. He walked out into a field of polinating corn a couple years ago and swelled up like a balloon. He couldn't hardly see out of his eyes. DH sent him home to shower. He has been getting shots for it ever since, but stays out of the pollen.

After having pork from outdoor hogs you can really tell the difference. The only ones we ever had confined were sows with babies so our home-grown pork has always been from outdoor hogs. But my ex-boss had hogs 100% in confinement and one time when we didn't have any hogs we bought a half from him. It wasn't nearly as good as ones kept outdoors.

I wash my towels twice a week, and sheets once a week. I never wash pillows. I just replace them, maybe twice a year?
