In the text thread asking if you consider a text like a phone call, many responded that they keep their cell phones on at night for emergencies. We have a landline so I put my cell phone on vibrate at night. If there is a true emergency, the entire family knows to call the house line. Works great for us, and that "emergency line" at night has only been used once in 2 1/2 years. So how about you? Do you only have a cell phone thus you always have to keep it on? I personally LOVE my landline and will never be without one. P.S. Some also mentioned they have to keep their cell phone on at night because they use it for their alarm. My phone can be on vibrate but the alarm will still go off with sound. Don't most phones work that way? Just wondering.

I only have a cell phone. I don't feel like I am home enough to justify the expense of a landline. I'd only be getting telemarker calls on it.

We don't have a landline at all. I felt very free when I finally got rid of mine and now that I live in a house, there's absolutely no reason to have a third line on top of our two mobiles. It's always on but I don't really see why it would be turned off any more than a landline would be turned off at night. I don't really think about using the phone for emergencies, it's just part of having the phone. But I haven't read the other thread so maybe I'm missing something.

We don't have a landline, so my phone is on all the time and it's beside me at night. I have my text alert set to just one beep, so in all likelihood I will not hear a text message coming in. I would hope if it's an emergency, the person would call me.

The alarm will still go off on my phone if it is on vibrate but I will wake to the vibration of a text.
We have 3 mobiles in the house and recently got rid of our landline. The only person that called it was my Mum so we just now call her to save her the cost of a mobile all.

For some reason, my house is not compatible with cell phones. Texts and wifi are fine, but to actually talk on my cell phone is darn near impossible. The only place that gets good enough reception to carry on a conversation is my back porch and I don't always want to sit out there and chat. It was easier to keep a land line. (I have had ATT and Verizon and it is the same way for both. Right now I have ATT and the boy has Verizon and he has the same problem with using his phone inside.)
In the event that there is an emergency people will call the home phone. I also think that if there is an emergency on my part, I won't have to run around screaming 'can you hear me now? hello, hello, hello??' to the 911 operator because my cell phone simply does not work inside my house.
(I do keep my phone on for the alarm, but can never remember to change the settings to the do not disturb thing. Or if I do, I don't remember to change it back and miss everything until someone like my mother calls to ask me if I am okay because I am not answering texts.)

We don't have a landline. I didn't have a cell phone until this summer (we had a landline until we moved), but dh's phone is always on and next to the bed at night. As long as all of the kids are in the house, I don't think the likelihood of being asked to address a middle of the night emergency is that high, however.

If we didn't have family overseas I would definitely get rid of the landline!!!

We have a landline, but at this point it's just a nuisance. I think we need it for our alarm system. No one ever bothers to answer it and it's mostly telemarketers.
I keep my cell on the table beside my bed within reach. I started doing that last year because ds was on the road a lot in the winter traveling in the middle of the might half the time (assistant on a college sport team.) I started keeping my cell phone within reach and on then knowing he was on the road sometimes. My kids would never use the landline in an emergency.

I would love to get rid of our landline, but since our cell phone coverage is spotty as we are in the country., we need the landline in case of emergency for my parents, especially my mom who lives alone.

I haven't had a landline in years -- maybe 8 or so? And I really haven't missed it.
Both my husband and I sleep with our cell phones on our bedside tables. I have all notifications turned off except text & calls. His beeps occasionally (that dumb Clash of Clans game - lol), but I guess we both sleep through those. If either phone actually rings in the night, then we assume there's trouble of some sort.

We kept the land line mostly because it was bundled with TV and internet and it was cheaper to have it than not have it.
The problem for me keeping the phone silent at night is that I have a staff of 40 any of whom may call me (and if they do call me, it will always be at very early hours) 5 days a week. If they call the house phone, it rings all the phones in the house and wakes everyone up. If they call my cell phone, it rings only my phone and only wakes me up. Like I said in the other thread, most days I get no calls but today I've been up since before 6 working a bunch of subs.
So the solution is not one size fits all. What works for you may not work for someone else.
Which is why I still think being a little conservative about middle of the night communications is more mannerly.

We have a landline. We kept it because when ODS was young I wanted to make sure if he ever had to call 911 they would be able to find the address if he couldn't tell them it. Now it's mostly because it's bundled with our cable/internet. I don't take my cell phone upstairs with me when I go to bed. I charge it in the kitchen overnight.

Ours is bundled with the TV/Internet as well, but we almost never use it. One thing though, is, we are in hurricane country, so on the off chance, our landlines our underground, so we would have something in case the towers go down.
Anyone who needs us, knows to call the cellphone first.

We just got rid of our landline. One thing I regret is that I can no longer give out my landline when I am required to give out a phone number. The caller ID always showed up on our TV, so we knew if the call was legit or not. I feel like I am going to be getting those telemarketer calls on my cell now.

We still have a landline and I talk on it all the time. Well, to the few people who I'll talk on the phone to. lol. I find it difficult to hear sometimes when I'm talking cell phone to cell phone. I have a friend who will call from her cell and she'll forget and call my cell -- but I find the reception to be garbled sometimes, or it fades off and on. It's so much easier to hear when it's her cell to my landline. And when I have to call anywhere -- insurance, library, store, doctor, even friend (lol) -- I always use the landline unless I'm out somewhere and absolutely have to make a call. That's rare, but I will call on my cell if I have to.
I use the cell for texting and keeping up with my kids. Also for communicating with my dh sometimes during the day, although he's bad at remembering to look at it. My kids have to have cell phones because for dd there's no such things as dorm phones anymore (although she's in an apartment this year -- but no landlines there either), and ds lives in a house with three other guys and they all have just cells. I love my cell phone to death (text, internet, games, audiobooks...lolol) but don't use it much for actual talking.

We had one until a few weeks ago because of our alarm system. The phone was costing us over $60 a month, so it was cheaper to go wireless with the alarm than it was to keep the phone and the old system.
We have 4 people living in our house and we all have cell phones. So far, I am really liking it.

We had a landline when our kids were too young to have a cell phone. Once they had cells we dropped the landline. It was interesting though - prior to dropping the landline we noticed that everyone called our cells and that the only people that ever called the landline were telemarketers. No desire to pay for that! Dh and I both keep our cell phones on our night stands when we go to bed.

The larger landline phone is so much better on my hands.

We keep the landline because we've discovered the hard way that in a public-type emergency, the cells are often overcrowded and/or not always functioning. Often, you can't get through on a cell phone. We've seen this for wildfires and for hurricanes. It's a relatively minimal expense to just make me and the telemarketers feel safer.

Our current house has really bad cell coverage so we've had a landline there for 9 years. I'm so tired of all of the telemarketer calls! So tired of it. Luckily we are moving soon and our new home location has excellent cell coverage so we won't have a landline there. Patter you say you love your landline, I hate mine bec of the telemarketers. I will have to use earbuds at home or something to talk on my cell phone for an extended amount of time. I can't multitask and hold the cell phone between my ear and shoulder. Other than that I say good riddance to the landline!

A great deal of this could be avoided if people took more care in learning how to use and set their own devices. I use an iPhone. It's set to be my alarm on my nightstand. It gets laid facedown so it doesn't do that momentary glow with every notification. Do not disturb is engaged but if DH is traveling I set it to override so if he needs me he knows to call twice in rapid succession. We do not have a landline. Cell coverage is not spotty here. DH supervises people in 4 different time zones. Learning to control the flow of phone notifications and noises was absolutely vital to the happiness of our marriage. Be your own gatekeeper.
