Went for a fitting today (wasn't that not fun!) and the saleswoman convinced me to buy Cacique (sp?) bras with underwires (she said I needed the extra support for my "big girls". Felt fine in the store but I just put one on, sat down, and holy hell! It feels like I have something digging into my rib cage.
Am I going to get used to this, or did I just waste my money???

I've been wearing them since I had boobs and I'm still not comfortable in them. I only wear them when I am out and the girls need to be reigned in and propped up. I use a sports bra or none when I'm at home.

Honestly, I don't even notice anymore since I've worn an underwire bra for such a long time.

Is it too tight, not sitting in the right place? I've never felt anything sticking in to me and I've always worn underwired. I do have the worlds smallest boobies though!!

If you have sizeable boobs... NEVER. It is a lie from the tiny boobed woman who have never worn an underwire for support. A good underwire will feel fine as long as you stand up straight and look forward. Do not sit, twist, walk, breath or otherwise alter your position.

This exactly! I hate underwires with a passion. I have not worn one in about 10 years. Soft cup with the extra banding for support. If you have sizeable boobs... NEVER. It is a lie from the tiny boobed woman who have never worn an underwire for support. A good underwire will feel fine as long as you stand up straight and look forward. I have small...really small...boobs, and I've been wearing underwire for 25 years. I still hate them with a passion....first thing to come off when I enter the house.

Ugh! For me it's the bra from hell. I have tried. Honestly I have but it feels like having a metal harness on. Just cannot do it.

A well-fitted underwire should lay flat on your chest and you breast tissue should lie comfortable in the cup. If the front of the wire where the two cups meet, gaps or is not sitting flat against , your wire/cup does not fit you. Looking from the dies part/under you are, the wire should lie flat against the side chest, not digging into you chest wall. It also should not be "short" and layout on breast tissue-if it is, the cup is too small. When you have the bra on, and the band fits correct, and you bend forward, all of you breast tissue should be in the cups, and the wires should remain against you chest. If it pulls away, the band may not fit, the cups may be too small. If it stays against your chest, but the cups are really loose and your breast do not stay in place, the cups are too big.
It doesn't matter what the salesperson says you wear, if that bras wires are not where they should be, and your breast don't fit in the cups correctly, it will never be comfortable. The first time I put on an underwire bra was the first I put on a comfortable bra. I had a good saleslady teach me the above fitting tips. And I think Cacique bras stink with their fit! These bras have cups that are too big for the wire and the wire are too small for the bands-makes the wires poke the arm and your boobs are propped up instead of well fitted and properly placed in the cup. Every time I try one on, I fill like my boobs are being shoved up under my chin. I hate them. Give me a good Sears Ahhh Bra style anyday, or even a Playtex with a natural breast line underwire. I have wearing underwire for 40 years.

FIRST thing that comes off when I get home....and then I breathe a sigh of relief! But it's not uncomfortable during the day...no poking, etc. It's just so nice to take it off!

Having one that fits well is essential, but also, IMO they need a few wearings to stretch or break in.

I don't remember not ever wearing an underwire. I just feel that it's so much more supportive. I have had some uncomfortable ones but like stated above - once you find one that is correct in it's fitting it should be comfortable. I mean as comfortable as a bra can be. When I get home it's the first thing that is coming off as I walk upstairs to change and wash my make up off. No bra, no make up = COMFORT.

If it is uncomfortable, then it doesn't fit. Go back and have them re-fit you.
As a teen, my mom carried on and on and on about how awful underwire bras were, miserable, horrid, etc. I was in my 20's when I tried one, and thought it was heaven. The girls (even back in their perky days) weren't sagging down against my chest. From there it was a slippery slope to colored panties, tank tops and general whore-dom. She tried to rein me back in when I was pregnant, telling me that I couldn't wear underwire while pregnant but by then it was too late.

I wear a G or GG cup size and will only wear underwire. I HATE soft cup bras. Even my sports bras have underwires. A good well-fitting bra will make you look and feel great and should not hurt. Ever. Even after wearing them all day long. None of my bras hurt as you say yours do, but I suspect it's the bra or the wrong size that is causing the problem, not underwires in general. I am very picky about what I buy. I can't just buy a bra at a regular department store due to the size needed, though several sales people tried to convince me otherwise. I won't wear cacique brand. They hurt just in the dressing room. Katie had some good points about finding a well fitting bra. I've had great success with Glamorise front close bras. Very comfortable. I've never thought underwires needed a break in period, but maybe it's the brand you're getting. Not every brand or every style will fit every person. If it's not comfortable it doesn't fit.
I wear underwire and don't even feel it.
Even if you go for a "professional" fitting, remember the employee is a salesperson and her job is to get you to buy bras in that store, not to help you find a bra that actually fits.

I'm so uncomfortable w/o a bra that I even sleep with one (not underwire). I don't mind sleeping in one. It's the last thing that comes off at night and the first thing that goes on in the morning. When I was in labor it was awful to not have a bra on - big as a barn, in pain, and those gigantic girls flopping and sagging and sweating all over the place. By kid #3 I just refused to take it off. The nurse said "what if there's an emergency?" I pointed out that if I walked into the emergency room having a labor-induced bra emergency they would be able to figure something out, and I suspected the L&D nurse could manage too.

I absolutely hate wearing NON underwire bras. Give me my wires! LOL! I'm sorry you're having problems. My guess is that it's not the right size and you need to return it.

Where did you get fitted? I'd be returning the one you have now - it doesn't sound the the right fit.

I used to wear underwires, but my boobs are bigger now. The biggest problem I have with them is that the wires underneath seem to sit right on my ribs in a way that is very uncomfortable when you do anything other than stand up straight. Sitting in a car, sitting at my desk, anything else I do means that wire is pressing on my ribs and I hate it.
Question for those who say they have the smallest boobs ever - why do you wear an underwire? Isn't that more support than you need?

I have about 20 different bras on the go right now. The only ones that fit are Wacoal. I don't know what they do they rule the universe. They are on sale right now at Nordstrom too. I checked the website and they have lots of them. I have tried sports bras and only Wacoal works for me. They do cost more so I have to buy less and take care of them. It's just a part of having boobs (that you may not want...)

How long does it take to get used to an underwire bra???
Uh, yeah. I'll let you know when and if I EVER do. Some are better than others and tolerable. That's the best they do, tolerable.

I started wearing underwires in 2002 - before that I was barely an A. I love my underwires and won't give them up. I have on occasion slept in one but it doesn't happen often. Necessary for me, but I have been properly fitted and love them.

I wear a 40 J...I think that is considered sizeable and my underwire bras are comfortable. I don't even notice the wire. I'm in the camp of "if it isn't comfortable, it doesn't fit." Bring it back and try again. Educate yourself on bra fitting. Even specialty stores don't always know how to fit correctly. Sometimes it is not the size that's the problem, but the style of bra.
