I don't think it should wait for the weekend because I'm sure the players want to get home to their families. Unless traffic s going to be an issue, I don't think schools should close either. Of course, if the parade were tomorrow, none of that would be an issue in my area because most schools are closed for election day- not for election day, per se, but because the schools can't control the number of unknowns who are in the buildings voting. It's a security risk. Apparently the contract with MLB is that the parade must occur with in 48 hours of winning the World Series. Interesting I wonder if it is an election day in KC?

Kansas City really does get behind its teams. So I think its not surprising that many schools are closing. They are calling it a Blue Snow Day. I do know that in KCMOSD and many others there are a lot of families that are reliant upon the schools for food. I would hope that some schools are providing meals. I saw some districts said they would have some one at the elementary school for care. I think they could have had the parade start at like 2 or 3 so schools could have closed at noon. Kids get fed, count it as a day of school. Parade done before it gets dark. I am related to some of the people who are planning the parade... maybe I'll share this poll. Next time the Royals win!

No the schools should not go. I don't have an issue with it being an excused absence if kids want to go. But, too many parents and their kids depend on school.

The first Tuesday in November is Election Day nationwide. Sometimes there isn't much to vote on, but it is still Election Day.

I think they should stay open(unless traffic will cause major problems) so that those who want to go to school can, but I think it should be an excused absence if people want to enjoy the parade. And why do they hold these parades during the work week(edit- never mind. Read the answer after I posted, lol)?

Schools did not close in1985. It was my Sr yr and I had to skip school to go to the parade. My county government is closing for 3 hrs to allow for people to go to the parade. Except for public safety (sworn and civilian) and district court. I am a life long Royals fan, but closing schools is a bit much.

I just saw this on FB... the good people of KC step up to help out
Parents, has school being cancelled tomorrow put you in a bind? If you are one of those parents who don't know what to do with your children because classes have been cancelled, but you still have to work, we can help you out. LUMC member and certified teacher, Mary Lipp, is coordinating childcare at the church for Kindergarten and up, 7:30am-5:30pm. All we ask is a donation and for the children to bring a sack lunch. If your child is coming, please comment here or email Mary at bookzlover@gmail.com so we know how many to plan for. Feel free to invite friends. We may have to limit the number of children, so please let us know you are coming, ASAP.
Youth, if you are interested in helping, contact Mary.

I live in the area, and our schools are closed. Initially the district had planned to stay open, and if a parent called the absence would be excused. They requested that parents call today so that they could plan for lunch tomorrow, and said that the children at school would be able to watch the parade on television. By the end of the day they decided to close due to the response they got from the parents. Before and after school care students are eligible to go to the school all day if they wish, but only if they are already enrolled in the program.
Ultimately I am glad that school is canceled, because I was pulling my kids out anyway for the parade, but I can see how it will put people in a bind.

We won the super bowl the year before last and our school didn't close. The parade was during the day and it was fine with schools for kids to go- parents just excused them Like any other excused absence. We don't have to bring doctor notes, etc so apparently we are rather lax on absences!

So the KC Royals won the World Series last night. The first time in 30 years. I don't live in KC so I have no dog in this fight. My FB feed is full of people complaining one way or the other. The largest school district KCMOSD is not closing. Many of the surrounding schools are. People are complaining the KCMO is not closed. People are complaining that they have to work and that school should not be cancelled. So what do you think should happen? If you live in a city that has recently won a major sporting event.. what did your town do? when the Avs won, the parade was later in the day, but it was June and light out later. I remember but I think it was still early enough that I took the kids out of school. I know I took them out, I just don't remember if it was because of a time conflict or there were other celebrations going on downtown. My niece was in town from Craig and it was a big deal for her. Heck, until that visit, she had never ridden on an escalator. My oldest daughter was in middle school and chose to stay in school because she didn't want to mess up her perfect attendance. I can see why schools might choose to close especially if this kind of thing doesn't happen often, if ever before.

My DD is a teacher in one of the KC area districts not closing. She mentioned that there is a shortage of subs tomorrow. It is a bit sad that she has school because her DH works for Royals/Kauffman and she would love to go to the parade.

I'm not into sports but I think sometimes it's important to step back and just live a little. We could all use a fun day of celebration from time to time.

It's my understanding that in the state of Missouri you have to have a certain percentage of students in attendance at school each day to receive state funding. So if the attendance percentage is too low it could mess that up. If that is correct, I think it's probably the real reason that schools are closing.

I wasn't sure if you were from the US. We don't have any key elections either, but the schools are still closed. They are every year no matter how big the election is. Our schools rarely have off days or have half days, so the random Tuesday off is even more random in our district!

Meh. I don't understand the outrage over the schools closing. It's just one day and a lot of kids would probably miss anyway. While school is important I think missing a day here and there is not a big deal to get worked up about. It's a big party, of course everyone's going to want to go.

I get that, but Dani does make a good point. For parents who have to work, and can't make last minute arrangements, it does put them in a bit of a bind. Particularly for kids on free/reduced lunch who may not eat other wise. I think for that reason, unless the parade interferes with school traffic in the immediate area, they should try and stay open. I don't think schools here were closed for the Super Bowl or Stanley Cup wins. But I have no problem at all with parents taking kids out to go to the parade. Events like those don't happen every day. I don't get the 48 hour thing. Why such a rush? But that's MLB for you.

If it wasn't for the kids who rely on schools for lunch, I would totally support closing schools. I think they should have scheduled in later in the day so schools could have half a day and kids would be feed, employers would be more likely to close early and it would be less disruptive. I love the way the city has rallied behind the Royals... it wasn't that long ago that they were the joke in MLB. I missed the last parade 30 years ago because I was in college 3 hours away and I had a test I couldn't miss, and now I'm too far away.

Maybe the real discussion needs to happen at the league level so that they can allow for parades to happen on the weekends as opposed to the 48 hour thing.
For the record, I would allow my children to skip school for something like this-regardless of whether or not the absence would be excused. But I am in the parenting camp that says sometimes experiences can be as important as school.

Especially if you are playing away, you have to get home etc. I wondered if it was a big deal in other cities. Seems like its not. I would totally take my sports hating kid out of school for it... because it is really a rare occurrence, and we need to celebrate more!!

Of course, they should close the schools. After all, the most important thing in the world are sporting events and glorifying highly paid professional athletes for their skill at handling balls.

Haha to Mallie above! My daughter would say that exact thing. I get it. I say shut them down! It's a rare rare thing to win a World Series. Let the kids and the people celebrate if they want. One day off of school is nothing. (Said by a teacher.)

One of the school district's pages I read said that they didn't expect enough kids to be there to have classes so they thought it was just wiser to take the day off, HOWEVER, they did say they would have to make up that day later in the year, so they really didn't miss anything, but they gained something big. I have zero problems with it.

I live in the area and our district is closed. I'm originally from Los Angeles, and we never closed schools for a Laker, Dodger, Angels or Mighty Ducks championship. I can see both sides of this argument. Some of the inner city schools have children that live in poverty and depend on school meals. I'm sure this is why Kansas City school district remained open today. I live in a county that is affluent, so most school districts closed here. But here is what annoys me about that. My district hates to use their snow days. There have been times when the kids have gone to school and I felt that the roads weren't safe. We had ice one morning 2 years ago. My middle and high schooler both left on the bus in the morning, and I went out to get lab work. My car went sliding off the street. Fortunately I didn't hit anything, but there were cars sliding all around me. I got home safely and saw various accidents on the news. There should not have been school that day, but the school district didn't want to use one of their built in snow days. They better not have nerve enough to pull that again this year.
Oh and Go Royals!!! We're so happy they won!

I'm in Kentucky and our schools are closed yesterday and today anyway because of today being election day and schools being used as polling stations. They go ahead and close Monday because people were taking it as well and making a long weekend of it. I think both are "professional days" on the School Calendar.
There is also a school district near us that closes when the Girl's Basketball Team goes to State (which is nearly every year).

I don't think the schools should close and it is up to parents if they want to pull their kids and/or skip work. ETA neither of my kids are baseball fans so one would have no interest in going and one is always up for a party and wouldn't miss it what if the teachers want to go and there aren't enough subs? . The reasoning probably boils down to Average Daily Attendance funding. In MO, state school funding is figured by ADA. if you have low attendance, you lose money by having school.
