So the KC Royals won the World Series last night. The first time in 30 years.
I don't live in KC so I have no dog in this fight.
My FB feed is full of people complaining one way or the other.
The largest school district KCMOSD is not closing. Many of the surrounding schools are.
People are complaining the KCMO is not closed. People are complaining that they have to work and that school should not be cancelled.
So what do you think should happen?
If you live in a city that has recently won a major sporting event.. what did your town do?

I was IN KC in 1985 when they won and a senior in high school. I don't even remember what the school districts did.. lol.. I say let the parents decide and allow an excused absence.. have a little fun.. it doesn't happen often!!

Could it be because of the congestion city victory celebrations create?

I think it is a choice for the parent to make. Most people won't be taking off work (or can't) and having your kid's school cancel at the last minute like this will be huge inconvenience to most of the parents. School isn't a daycare, but unless there is an emergency, a school should be in session if it is on the calendar. I think the parade could be held on Saturday when more people could attend.

Could it be because of the congestion city victory celebrations create? What I read is that most schools think that most people will be at the parade so its easier to just close. I have read some schools are asking to let them know if you need to bring your child to school and they will have a small staff there, so you don't have to worry.

There were not very many kids there and there was very little instruction going on. It was the Seahawks first Super Bowl win so it was a huge deal in this area. I let my dd go to the parade. I monitor her grades and attendance and a co-worker was going so I let her go with them. She learned more that day than she would have in school - many life lessons

It's probably a lot more practical to close. I don't blame them.

I think it would be impossible to make everybody happy, so they should schedule the parade when they schedule it and everyone else should make their decisions accordingly.
We have enough built in instructional hours in our calendar that we could give up a day or half a day for something like this. It's fine.
We totally played hooky to watch the space shuttle fly in on top of a jet a couple of years ago. Too cool to miss. I would file this in the same category if you're a sports fan at all.

I lived in Kansas City when the Royals won the World Series in 1985. They did not cancel school. But my parents let my brother and I go to the parade with them. Prettyuxh every one of my friends went, too. Call them horrible parents… But we both graduated with honors.

I don't think the schools should close and it is up to parents if they want to pull their kids and/or skip work.
ETA neither of my kids are baseball fans so one would have no interest in going and one is always up for a party and wouldn't miss it

I do live in the area, and my DD's school is closed tomorrow. They didn't give that as the reason, though. Supposedly it was because there were going to be so many absences that they couldn't come up with enough subs to fill in. Mmhm. Just call it what it is. I guess it's no more disruptive than a snow day, so it doesn't bother me. For many, it's a once-in-a-lifetime event.

If it was my kids school, I would be fine with schools being closed if we didn't have to make up the day. If we had to make up the day, I wouldn't want schools to be closed. Just my thoughts!

IMHO that isn't a reason to close a school district. I assume there are many, many people that want to go but have to work.

I don't think it should wait for the weekend because I'm sure the players want to get home to their families. Unless traffic s going to be an issue, I don't think schools should close either. Of course, if the parade were tomorrow, none of that would be an issue in my area because most schools are closed for election day- not for election day, per se, but because the schools can't control the number of unknowns who are in the buildings voting. It's a security risk.

Schools in Chicago did not close when the Blackhawks won but there were many kids absent.

I'm admittedly not a baseball fan, but I'm not thrilled that our district (20-30 minutes from the parade area, farther from the Royals' home stadium) is closing tomorrow. I'm having to rearrange work things to be able to stay home with 8yo DD, and there are quite a number of parents in our district whom I'm sure do not have that luxury. Without exception, the reasons I've seen for districts cancelling are (1) too few students expected to come to have effective instruction, and (2) too many teachers expected to call in sick (REALLY???) and too few subs available. We will not be going to the parade, but DD may end up watching it on TV.
ETA: My understanding is that the league requires the parade be held within 48 hours of the final game, so it was not possible to wait until a weekend.

I work in a district where kids depend on free meals for breakfast and lunch. I never, ever support districts closing randomly like this because there will always be kids going no without food because of that decision.

DD's school is a Title 1 school - all students get free breakfast, most get free or reduced lunches.

Here in Canada school would never be canceled for a parade If parents want to take their kids out to go to it then they should be able to give them an excused absence ...

When I lived in San Angelo Texas, it was a school holiday when the rodeo came to town. I have no problem closing the school for one day.

My kids' schools closed for the Pope, but that was because of street closures near the schools - they were afraid students and faculty would have a hard time getting to and from school. My school did not close, nor did the public schools.
Schools have never been closed for World Series or Super Bowl parades, to my knowledge.

I don't follow football and didn't know there was a parade in the first place. I am not sanctimonious about taking kids out of school for such a thing and have taken my kids out for events. This just isn't one of them.

We did have a superintendent that didn't call a snow day for the nine years he worked in our district. He came from Alaska and told us that we were in the business of teaching and our doors would be open to anyone who showed up. I had to drive ten miles to work and there were some brutal drives I remember.

I never, ever support districts closing randomly like this because there will always be kids going no without food because of that decision. This is what I was going to say. But I suspect that a lot of the KCMO district is in a poorer area of town. I only say that because we were just there yesterday visiting friends and they are part of the KCMO district and they have said before that quite a few of their kids friends are on the free lunch program. Their neighborhood is a lot of small rental houses and a lot of single parents in a rundown part of the city. Nevertheless, I think its a fun thing to do! A chance to give kids a day off to celebrate something that only happens every couple decades.
