I live in the area and our district is closed. I'm originally from Los Angeles, and we never closed schools for a Laker, Dodger, Angels or Mighty Ducks championship. I can see both sides of this argument. Some of the inner city schools have children that live in poverty and depend on school meals. I'm sure this is why Kansas City school district remained open today. I live in a county that is affluent, so most school districts closed here. But here is what annoys me about that. My district hates to use their snow days. There have been times when the kids have gone to school and I felt that the roads weren't safe. We had ice one morning 2 years ago. My middle and high schooler both left on the bus in the morning, and I went out to get lab work. My car went sliding off the street. Fortunately I didn't hit anything, but there were cars sliding all around me. I got home safely and saw various accidents on the news. There should not have been school that day, but the school district didn't want to use one of their built in snow days. They better not have nerve enough to pull that again this year. Oh and Go Royals!!! We're so happy they won! KCMO is closed today too. They must have changed their minds. Yesterday afternoon they said they wouldn't close. I can't imagine what a nightmare it would have been to reroute school buses.

One of the school district's pages I read said that they didn't expect enough kids to be there to have classes so they thought it was just wiser to take the day off, HOWEVER, they did say they would have to make up that day later in the year, so they really didn't miss anything, but they gained something big. I have zero problems with it. I was just going to say.. every school I have read about said they have to make the day.. I don't know there is something about this team. maybe it is their resilience, the way they came back in almost every game they won.. I think they are plucky and deserve the whole city stopping for a few hours and celebrating.

Just bumping this to report that the estimated attendance at the parade was 800,000 people!!!! That is nuts! I actually know several people who went. It was just mass chaos with all the people but only 3 people were arrested and most everyone behaved themselves!
800,000 people is almost the population of the entire state of Ks. Crazy!

Um, actually it's just a little more than a quarter of the population of KS, but yeah - still a ton of people.

I was coming back to report that I had to look up the population of Kansas when I saw your post. I thought there were only a little over a million. Hehe! Seriously, I had no idea that we had that many people here!

I looked up the population of the kansas city metro area and it is just over 2 million. If 800K were there, that is around 39%. As for the schools closing, I worked in some of the poorest schools in the metro area and I did worry about snow days and such and if my kids would eat. However, I also know that KC is a small market for baseball and the city has been aching for a winning team to support. Fans still loved them even through the 100+ loss seasons and you should have seen the support when they finally finished over .500 one year. Winning championships for larger cities/markets is a different beast all together. What I love is that my city was classy all the way. There weren't riots, there weren't any cars tipped etc. Classy and celebratory.

I did not read all the responses, so if this is a repeat, I apologize.
In Texas, if your school has a high absentee rate for the day, no funds are paid (from the state) for school that day. This is why schools close during a flu epidemic etc.
So, if the school is aware that most of the students are going to the parade, then the wise thing to do is just close--there will be no funding for the day and the subject matter will have to be covered again the next day.
This "logic" is why Dallas area schools are closed one day during the state fair time (and the fair gives a free ticket to the kids)--gets it all done in one day. FW does the same on the day the rodeo opens and they have a parade. The rural community in which I grew up gave us a holiday when the fair opened.
School admin recognizes it is a battle to be lost, so they just "go with the flow."
