One of the largest in the country. And apparently we've received a threat similar to those in Los Angeles and NYC. They don't believe it's credible and school will be held tomorrow ... but is this what it's going to be like now? I'm thinking attendance tomorrow will be light.
My kids are also students in the district. Would you send your kids to school? What if the earlier baseless threats were just to lull us into complacency?

That's horrible.
I'm so sorry.
My DH is a teacher and I worry about this daily.

Honestly? This close to being out for Christmas I would probably just keep them home.
I do wonder, though - would they really call in a threat if it were real? Or is it possible that where the threat is called in is only a distraction for where it is really going.
Any who - I hope everything is ok.

Friday is the last day of school before vacation for us, so likely I would let the boy stay home unless he had a major test or something else that he couldn't miss. I am sorry that you are having to deal with this. One of the schools in our district had a bomb threat and closed for the day. It seems insane that we are (collectively) are having to make such frightening decisions as to whether or not a bomb threat is 'serious' or not.

IDK. I would be torn also. I would start to wonder if it's coming from kids that don't want to take finals before cmas break, and this is the time of year where there are a ton of finals.

You do what you feel best for your children. Me, I'd probably keep them home. I know the likely hood of this being real is slim. However, I also feel that this could be sort of like Russion Roulette. At some point, it could be real.

My husband just got a call about a faculty meeting first thing in the morning.
Now I'm sure it's about this.
I feel sick.

Oh my goodness I am so sorry you have to deal with this. My kid graduated in 2007 and this world was not so scary then, or we didn't hear about it, maybe. I was always a worry-wart, so I am pretty sure I would have let him stay home. Sending safe wishes your way.

I'm not very kuowledgeable on this subject but isn't school funding largely dependent upon attendance? I assume this is the case so I always take it into consideration when deciding to keep a kid home. That said, in this case, I would send my children to school. I think that we, as parents, will be faced with this dilemma many more times over the next several months.

Oh. man. Is this really our new reality? Insane. I honestly don't know what I'd do if I had kids. I'm sorry you have to even give it a thought.

I always think that a district that actually receives a threat is fine. Most people who want to hurt others want everyone to be there. I sent my kids when there was a threat (phone message) to the high school. It was a prank by kids who didn't want to go to school. But you just don't know.

This is so scary. I think I would keep mine home unless they would miss an exam or it would be counted as an unexcused absence even if I didn't think it was a credible threat. They will find who is responsible for these threats and I hope they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. ETA: Just heard on the news that my local school district was included in the LA Unified district's threat but wasn't notified by them. SMDH

I know that it doesn't directly affect me in the US but we are equally on a high security alert here and have been for months.
Common sense needs to prevail. Some "idiot" is always going to get on the band wagon and use the situation to cause disruption for his/her own amusement. The more the media report on these false alarms the more these idiots are going to continue and in doing so they spread this perceived fear among members of the public. I don't believe for one minute that they, the terrorist, are going to give anyone a heads up in advance, if or when they will strike. It's not their way of doing things.
So to answer your original question merge. Yes, I would send my kids to school unless the powers that be had something far more tangible to base their concerns on.

A friend of my brother who had graduated the year before called in a threat just to get his friends out of school. It worked the first time. The second time he got caught. He was 18 at the time so he has the fact that he made a terroristic threat on his record for the rest of his life. There are many places that won't even consider hiring him because of this. I hope if it's just kids trying to get out of school they know that they can have their lives ruined by one act of stupidity.

A suburb close to me is closed because of a bomb threat, too. It's two districts away from my son's. Finals start today. Had there not been the other ones this week I would chalk it up to a jerk not wanting to take their final, but now? I don't know.

Well, after a fairly sleepless night for me (thanks, anxiety!) we're up and going to school. It sounds on Facebook, though, that many parents are keeping their kids home. Should be a fun day with lots of already wound-up middle schoolers!

I would send my kids. There'd be more eyes on that school than any other day - probably safer than it was today.

It's happened at 2 different school districts near me. One was at a high school yesterday, classes were not cancelled. Today, I just read that another district has canceled classes at all schools due to a threat. I really cannot believe that this is our new reality. I really need to start thinking about what I'll do if it happens at our district ETA-Just heard on the news that two districts are now closed, the threats came from the same social media account. WTH!

This is the district next to me (we're in Fort Bend) and I get the anxiety, but honestly we cannot let this scare us into not doing the things in life that are both necessary and joyous. I refuse to give the schmucks who issue these threats that power, and I have to trust the leadership in the various areas to make the right decisions about closing or not closing.

The Dallas News website says the threats are not credible. Dallas police checked the two schools with bomb sniffing dogs that were identified. School will be in session today.
I'm so sorry you are having this hang over your heads today. Prayers for calmness and strength.

Its last two days of finals week, my kids would beg to go and finish exams. But I agree with Guiliani that (paraphrasing) this could be some sort of probe behavior to determine response. Prank bomb calls are not new, I was trained what to do in 1980 at my college receptionist job. Even then police knew they escalated at finals- give them some credit The Miami-Dade, Houston and Dallas districts were able to determine within a short time these weren't typical student troublemakers.

We had a threat a few years ago. It happened at the end of the school day the day of the Newtown shooting. The threat was for the last day of school before Christmas break. The police investigated, it was on the news and they found it was not credible. We sent our kids but half the school didn't go. We felt the kids would be safer there than anywhere else!
