true!!!
Someone posted condolences on my timeline. It freaked me out! I just saw my mom on Friday. Called her mobile in a panic. She is out playing bridge and is fine.
Now my facebook is lighting up with everyone wanting to know what happened to my mom and sending condolences even though I commented on the post, hid it from my timeline and updated my status that all was well.
UGGGG!!!

Good grief! As soon as my blood pressure normalized I would be looking for someone to thump. All good thoughts.

I would have to respond to something like that... Okay, I might not actually respond like that, but I'd think about it really hard and maybe post something along those lines. So sorry you went through that. (((hugs))) Had to have scared you badly.

MizIndependant I really, really really want to cut and paste your comment. I might still, once my heartbeat normalizes By all means, but only if it doesn't create additional side-drama for you. That person certainly deserves a good hand-slapping. The nerve!

There just really aren't any words for how uncool that is. Have no mercy on them. Also, unfriend as their judgement is poor at best. Even if they can produce a "plausible" explanation here (french teenagers anyone?) common sense and courtesy would have led them to verify before posting I should think. Some people really need to learn to think before engaging with the internet. And getting the scoop and being the first to post something is not as cool as they think it is.

I'd at least find out where the person got the idea before lambasting them. If I was explicitly told someone's mother passed I wouldn't be verifying the information, I'd just reach out to the friend.
It's a crappy mistake but I'd find out how it happened before writing the friend off entirely.

I think my FB account would probably get terminated with the megatonnage of F-bombs I would drop on such a person .I mean, really! A call instead of a FB post and geez Louise, read the person's wall to see if anyone else is saying anything (especially the person you're about to send condolences to) - friggin' first-posters.

I would get mom to send a selfie with today's newspaper or pose wearing some sunglasses a la Weekend at Bernie's.
But I'm warped like that.

Holy... there are no words, I can't believe some people. After a big glass of wine, I would write the beautifully worded comment MizIndependent wrote, then unfriendly after I got done shaking.

Why wouldn't they at least check your page first for a message? And if nothing was there, send a PM if you are really that curious? I'd be livid. How clueless is this person in general?

Just playing devil's advocate here. When my brother passed, I told a few of my friends and they spread the word. I didn't put it on Facebook for a day or two. Sometimes word spreads to acquaintances, people who you know but aren't close enough to telephone each other, especially in the first few days of grieving.

This happened to me but I was the one that had passed away. A crazy coworker where I use to work started a rumour. She got her son to text my cousin daughter to see what happened to me and everything, who daughter in turn called her Mom all in a panic that something happened. My cousin then called my husband at work to see what the heck was going on. It was crazy when it was happening but about a week after I was finding out more people she told the rumour to and was really pissed.....

Just heard back from her. She heard it from someone she claims to not know but who apparently knows her and my mom. Now she thinks its a scam and next thing they'll be asking her for money to help us. OY! Old ladies!! I did tell her how panicked I was and that she should check with the family before posting stuff on FB. It doesn't help that my mom lives here in the USA and this old friend of hers still lives in South Africa. Or that she says she tried to get a hold of my mom but couldn't. And for the record, my mom has a facebook account and is friends with her on there too.

Gotta watch out for those Nigerian scammer neighbors to the north of her.
