I recently noticed that on the various HGTV shows (may happen on others as well), whenever there is a bookshelf in the shot/room, the books are turned around so the spines are not visible. Is this a copyright thing or something? And why does it distract me so much?

Yeah, copyright would be my guess.
Same reason why the names on the soda cans are altered on TV shows.

Yeah, copyright would be my guess. Same reason why the names on the soda cans are altered on TV shows. Opposite that...I love when you see an obvious product placement. I was watching a Hallmark Christmas movie and they did a close up of the Folgers can sitting next to the coffee maker. I laughed out loud, it was that obvious.

It wouldn't be a copyright issue I don't think; but it might be a way to make a room look a bit more "cohesive" with the white paper edges out instead of all the various colors of book spines. And, it keeps viewers from seeing what the homeowner reads. I don't approve of your reading so I boycott your show/sponsors. And it keeps the books from being used as advertising for some company.

They are altered so it doesn't appear that "pepsi" (or whoever) is endorsing the program unless that company has paid the film maker for product advertising.

Business' pay to have their products on shows and/or credit is given them in the credit screens.
NCIS always gives credit to the boxing pictures that are in Vance's office.

I think they do it to make it one uniform color. Pottery barn catalogs did it a few years ago and as a bibliophile I found it offensive

Yeah, sorry, I guess that would be trademark, not copyright. Although I am sure CBS would still have to get Coke's permission to put it in an episode of Big Bang Theory even if CBS did feel like giving away free publicity. The uniformity of look explanation, though, makes much more sense. I never thought of that (especially since the last book I bought has those stupid unevenly cut pages, and I think those just look messy).

Definitely not copyright - as you can't copyright a title. It's either to not give free advertising or they like the look of paper.

I'd never noticed. But my thinking is that either the sellers or the TV show don't wish to have people see what their taste in books is.

I've not noticed the books turned around but have noticed artwork blurred out.

That's what I think. It's like when they show a closet and all of the clothes hanging are the same color. No wonder it looks so good--like everyone has a closet full of white blouses/pants/dresses.

And the framed prints on the walls are blurred out..... Maybe they have the same taste in "art" as my sister? Almost everything on her walls are erotic (although slightly abstract) bordering on pornographic.

To tangent the tangent: At least in the USA, it is definitely not a trademark infringement to show names of products - like a character drinking a Coke or wearing Nike shoes or driving a Jeep - as long as the use is incidental to the story. (So, you need permission if the character's Nike shoes become part of the plot.) Product placement is whole different issue.
The art work laws are a little stricter, so maybe those would apply in a design show if the art is considered part of the design? I don't know.
OP's Question: I'm not sure what the copyright laws are, but as someone mentioned unthread, book titles can not hold a copyright, so I'm going with the aesthetic-or-privacy theories. Probably aesthetics.
You know those design photos with bookcases full of same-or-complementary colored spines? I roll my eyes at buying entire book collections for color, but I'll admit that I DO think a riot of spine colors can look messy. So I hereby confess: I have bought fabric to make curtains for the inside of the glass-fronted bookcase in my living room 'cause I think the present look messes with my vintage vibe. And yes, I give you all permission to roll your eyes.

It was mentioned on here once before and now I notice the books everywhere on those shows. My other question is about closets. They show a too small stuffed closet in the before section of the show. They add a huge walk in closet with 4 or 5 pieces of clothing hanging 5 inches apart. What happened to the rest of their wardrobe and who has a closet with clothes hanging that don't touch each other?
