Garmin for a car....or another brand.... Ladies, I need to get one of these. Any suggestions? The suv is a 2012 if that helps.

I don't understand what the vehicle has to do with it? A dash mounted one doesn't care what kind of car you have.

We have a Garmin and use it in our car, SUV and truck. It doesn't matter whether it is for a car or SUV or the year of the vehicle.
A Garmin or other brand GPS is usually portable and you can even hold it and use them while walking.

I prefer my Garmin over my phone. If you get a GPS, make sure it comes with lifetime updates.

for those that use your phone..... doesn't it run your data charges up, especially on a long trip? No idea since I feel like my phone screen is too small to see easily while driving.
I have a garmin but it is several years old by now and was a discontinued model when I bought it. But it has been worth the money. I depend on it! I've also had magellan and tomtom... really couldn't recommend any one over the other. I'll get about 3-4 years use out of them before they die on me or the maps get out of date and the company isn't supporting map updates for that model.
You vehicle doesn't impact them. They plug into the power port (aka the old time cigarette lighter) The come with some type of suction cup holder to attach them temporarily to the windshield or dash. I used mine in my cup holder to anchor my gps across the top of the cup holder.

on a long trip, you just use it around towns..I don't need it on to drive the freeway for 3 hours.. but I also check out routes before I go. I haven't found any issues with just using waze. I also have the voice directions on...so I don't look at it so much unless at slow streets. we used it from sf to yosemite and back.

I need it on the freeway because I get to rocking along and forget to pay attention to the exits. I need my gps voice to remind me THIS IS IT! And I don't want to have to pull over to start up an ap since I don't usually have a passenger with me to deal with the ap. To me starting an ap on the phone while driving is about as dangerous as texting and driving.

I'm with Volt. I like to have her (Garmin Lady) on to remind us to take an exit or a turn or whatever (our lets us know which lane to be in which is VERY helpful). So using my phone would be a data hog.

I was thinking long trips of 4-10 hours...anything under that should be fine. since I live in the west, it can be 2 hours between any civilization....

One thing I don't like about Waze is it doesn't tell you which lane to be in (I don't think anyway). I don't use it but DH does so I notice that when we're together in his car. I use the built-in App on the Iphone which is helpful but also have a stand alone GPS (Garmin). I like it because it has different options like "no freeways" which I can never figure out on the Iphone App.

Thanks! As far as what vehicle I wasn't sure if the mounting made a difference.
I'm looking at models that have the voice and lifetime maps! At least I have those options figured out.
Some of you mentioned where you mount it. I was wondering about that too. They show windshield mounts and other mounts. Do the windshield mounts actually hold in cold weather?
Thanks

I use the map app that was installed on my iphone. I haven't been disappointed! With that said, prior to that I was using a brand new Garmin I think and it sucked. More than a few times it had me going crazy routes that I knew were odd. One day it got me off the highway and sat me in Boston traffic I've used the one on my phone for long out of state road trips and haven't noticed it to be a huge data suck. But at the same time i've been so impressed with it vs the regular gps that i'd prefer data suck over being misdirected. And oddly enough i'd owned an older version of that gps which did a better job of getting me around.

Thanks Most mounts are large suction cups. It is conceivable, if cold enough, the rubber on the cup won't be soft enough to flex correctly for a good grip. But, once the car heater has warmed the interior of the car up (or if the mount is stored in a warm place so the rubber/silicon remains flexible) it will work just fine in cold weather.

I've used it on road trips (including a 2+ hour one yesterday), and have not come even close to using up my data. I think the amount it uses is pretty small.

Thanks We don't use the windshield mount but not because of cold weather. IIRC, windshield mounts are illegal in some states and restricted in others. I'm in Calif and they are restricted to a certain place on the windscreen. Lower left corner?, I'm not sure exactly because our Garmin is small enough that it fits in the console. So a quick glance down we can see the screen and the voice notifications are perfect for us.

I loved my garmin! But, our new van had a built in system, and it's more convenient to use the iPhone's in our other car. But seriously, if I had to buy another gps device it would absolutely be a garmin again. Be sure to get one that will correct its path should you miss a turn. Some of them didn't used to do that when they first came out.

We've been using Navigon on our iphones and then I bought a magnetic phone holder that goes into the CD player. We don't use the CD player and it does not get in the way of any other controls, plus it's in a great location to see it comfortably. I like that I didn't have to stick anything permanent to the dash. We just got a travel trailer last fall and this set-up did great on our first long trip out of state. My husband had already bought Navigon a few years ago, so the only thing I had to purchase was the CD car mount. I don't believe Navigon uses data, but I could be wrong. All I know was it worked when we were driving through the middle of no where without cell service. It does tell you which lane to be in which came in really handy while driving through LA traffic. I was just glad this set-up worked for us so that we didn't have to purchase another gadget. Here's the car mount: Magnetic CD Car MountI have this magnetic phone case for my iPhone Plus which allows me to just "stick" my phone the mount. I actually bought this case before the CD mount so it was cool that I found something that worked with the mount easily: Magnetic Phone CaseMy husband added the little magnetic plate that came with the car mount inside his iphone case and it holds great!

Pretty much everywhere I go has free wifi, so if I use all of my data for the month for GPS when I'm driving then it's no big deal. I love my phone GPS and it does everything a separate GPS unit would do (talks when I want it to, up to date info about detours and traffic, etc.), so I don't see the need for w separate unit.

Thanks I have a Garmin and love it. I use it on long trips as it tells me what lane to be in if I need to exit or use an interchange, what the speed limit on that particular road is, but mostly because it tells me how far I have to go. I use one of the dash mount bean bag holders and it works great. Mine came with a windshield mount, but they are against the law in my state. Something to check out before you mount it on your windshield. Eta: I used to use my phone, but the signal dropped out at a really crucial point while I was navigating in the Bay Area. I would have probably got into an accident trying to reboot everything back up. Too dangerous. That's when I decided to invest in an actual GPS.

Gosh, I didn't consider that it may be illegal to mount on the windshield.
Thanks ladies....more to look in to!
