My 90 y/o mother and I were drinking frozen daiquiris in Belize while on a cruise two weeks ago so I'm going with the excuse that our thinking skills were impaired. Haha. My cousin's friend got a wild hair to get one of the temporary black henna tattoos and before you knew it... four of us got one. Including my mama who never wants to be left out of anything! Lol. It was just a fun and crazy thing to do. No big deal. Only it was a big deal. My tattoo site got red, irritated, and basically blistered up like a burn would. A little googling and it turns out I am apparently allergic to PPD (paraphenylene diamine) used in those black henna tattoos. Oops. And the kicker is that that same chemical is used in a great majority of permanent hair dyes. I had my hair done last week but we skipped the dye until my hair dresser and I can do more research because it doesn't sound like an allergy/sensitivity that you want to ignore. I am now trying to find a professional grade hair dye that's free of paraphenylene diamine (PPD), PTD, or any PPD derivatives. The European Union and Japan are much more stringent on chemicals than the US, so there are a number of choices, but nothing I am familiar with. If you have a recommendation for me, please share! Here's the evidence of my stupidity. I told my hair dresser (who is also my sister-in-law) that I could kick myself for getting the tattoo and regretted it. But she pointed put that maybe it was a good thing as I now know of my PPD allergy/sensitivity and can react appropriately. When you google it, people have lapsed into coma and died from this. It's to be taken seriously. --- Edited to add -- I got the anchor for my two sons in the Navy. At least my heart was in the right place.

I've heard about "black henna" being very dangerous. I'm so glad you are ok - other than a traumatic reaction! Had you used the hair die before? Perhaps it's just what was in the black henna that made you react like that?
So glad you are ok!

Yikes. That's really scary! I'm sorry you're dealing with it, but like you said, it's good that you now know. Best of luck finding a suitable dye.

Looks so fun! I'm sorry it turned out not so fun... I agree that it's a good thing you found out about it in a non-life-threatening case.

Never knew about people being allergic to the dye. Glad you are ok. That is a very fun picture, though!

I've had my hair dyed now for about five years or so. Occasionally, I would have redness along my hairline and the tops of my ears and it would itch there like crazy for few days after my appointment. Those were signs that I was sensitive to the PPD and developing the allergy... I just didn't know it at the time.

I'm pretty sure black henna is banned here in Canada now. It looks pretty but man- so many people had awful and dangerous reactions.
Hope you had a great trip!

I believe they omit that ingredient as they are organic based dyes.

Do you have a salon near you that uses Aveda? I believe they omit that ingredient as they are organic based dyes. I'm finding that "organic" means next-to-nothing related to cosmetics and hair dyes. Here's some information on Aveda from my research: "Aveda: This well regarded product line is a favourite of professional colourists, and used in many natural salons. Aveda — now owned by Estée Lauder Corp. — claims that their products are 97% plant derived, often from certified organic ingredients, including natural pigments in the colourant. Aveda has reduced the use of petro-chemicals in its hair dye by replacing catalytic chemicals with essential oils and other natural compounds, making it a less toxic and “fumey” experience. Aveda permanent hair colours do contain PPD though, and peroxide in the lightening shades. While they have come a long way in improving the safety of their product, they can’t be considered organic and should be treated with the same caution as any other brand. - See more at: vitalitymagazine.com/article/gorgeous-hair/#sthash.1F9k6vwc.dpuf

How disappointing that you reacted to the henna, because the tattoo looks fabulous!

Black henna is not actually henna and your reaction was not uncommon. www.hennapage.com/henna/warnings.html (My brother and his wife owned a henna business for years before she died. I still sell hair henna and henna designs on the side as a hobby.)

I first read temporary BACK henna tattoo, and thought omg you must be in such misery with your back all blistered! I was relieved to see your photo and hope it won't leave too much of a scar!

Have you used this haircolor before? I just think that whatever you've been using is safe to continue using. The ingredients in your tattoo might be a lesser percentage of the ingredient or a different form of the compound. It's obviously something cheap that has had a long time to contact with your skin verses hair dye is out in an hour.

Well- thanks for the warning! I perhaps have the same allergy thing however mine was from hair dye. I had moderate itching on ears & scalp quite often like sponge mom commented. Then this summer had a full blown all over my body hives reaction. ( I came to this blog to ask for cures. ) My doctor thinks it "could " be the hair dye and that I transferred whatever the offensive poison( the PPD?) was to my body during shower. I was miserable & was sure I'd rather be bald or Grey than go thru that again. This is what I am experimenting with-My hairdresser is now doing foils and doesn't go clear to my scalp. It looks OK unless I'm in a windstorm. LOL. I take a shower , but put my hair in a cap. I wash my hair separately in the sink. A total PITA , but so far it is working. Just curious do you react to the sun also? Like sunbathing?

It's obviously something cheap that has had a long time to contact with your skin verses hair dye is out in an hour. That's not the way these kinds of allergies should be considered, though. Once you react, you should believe you can react again much more dramatically. It doesn't matter what else was in the henna since her scalp has already reacted before. She may have a severe reaction to the smallest contact next time. Or, she may never react again. It sounds like it's a gamble Scrapmom doesn't want to take, and I don't blame her. These reactions can be sheer misery all the way to deadly. Other allergies may be more predictable, so there isn't the same level of gambling involved. If you're a person who reacts, you know what I'm saying, and if you're not, it's a little hard to fully understand the panic you can feel when a reaction begins.

Just curious do you react to the sun also? Like sunbathing? Or your body may react systemically to contact. For example - my ldh could have slight contact with poison ivy and would get sick all over. He didn't break out in hives, but he could have had them from head to toe. I react to the sun. I get rashes, hives, prickles.... Not fun! It's good that you're taking extra precautions. You might consider taking Benadryl before getting your hair done AND take some with you in case you have a bad reaction.

When you google it, people have lapsed into coma and died from this. It's to be taken seriously. Whoa. That's a frightening possible reaction. I'm sorry your tattoo site blistered up in an allergic reaction, but I am glad that it is a forewarning to possible other allergic reactions to things like hair dye. And I just want to say, that photo of all of you with your tattoos is so cool. When I grow up, I want to be as cool as you all are.

Goldwell Elumen doesn't have PPD. THANK YOU! I'm liking what I am reading about it. And there are salons using it in our state so it looks like my stylist could get it. As leftturnonly has already addressed this, I'll just say she hit the nail on the head. This is simply a risk I am not willing to take. But really I just want to say I want to be drinking frozen daiquiris in Belize when I'm 90! So true! Me, too. I sure hope I got my mama's genes! Thank you everyone for your comments. I hate discussing anything related to my health with people publicly, but this is an issue that I don't think is widely known. My stylist was shocked that she had never heard of it in 16 years of doing hair. And as the post from patin shows, there are people with the sensitivity who SHOULD know about this.
