I know this is TMI, but I need to a little bit of help in deciding if this is normal bad, or get yourself to a Dr. bad.
I'm 51 and have had heavy bleeding during my period before, but this time is really bad. I started Wed night which was normal. Then on Thursday (yesterday) it was really bad. I had to change pads every 15-30 minutes. Had to change clothes twice and set on plastic bags so it wouldn't get on my chair. Had to cancel some plans because I couldn't leave the house with having to go to the bathroom to check on things every 5 mins. (Times line is true not making it up). Last night was bad, up all the time to change things.
Today it is a little slower, I am having to change pads about every hour today. I actually feel dizzy and I'm so tried today. Do I just chalk this up to my age and deal with it or is this something that I need to get seen about? I know it is Easter this weekend and will be hard to get seen by anyone.
Any thoughts would be appreciated and I'm sorry about the TMI.

I'd call. It looks like you are in the south, so it might be more prevalent for doctors to close on Good Friday, but here our doctors are open. Check you pcp or ob/gyn and see if they are in. If not, is there a number to call? If all else fails, maybe tag melissa.

Sounds like my story at about the same age.
If it were me I would wait until the first of the week and call my own doctor. She knows me and so I don't have to do the whole story thing.
I lived about a year this way and then my period just disappeared and has been gone almost 15 years.

definitely go in...that's not normal, and you will need a GYN to examine you.

If you notice some tapering off, I would wait. But if it does not seem to be lessening at all - get it checked.
I have had some heavy ones and I was able to manage that one awful day with a combination of super tampons and pads together.
But if you feel like it really hasn't let up, or is getting worse - at least call and talk to them.

I'm with oldcrow. They don't call them "crime scene periods" for nothing.

Saying that you're dizzy is concerning. I think that Monday is a long wait without at least calling the doctor.

I think you should be seen ASAP, maybe the ER. Do you have fibroids? The dizziness part concerns me. You may have lost a lot of blood. Changing pads as often as you did yesterday is not normal. Even every hour today is considered heavy bleeding. I have my crime scene days but have not been dizzy.

The start of menopause sucks big time. With that, it is time for a thorough work up.

I'm betting that after that heavy of a period, your iron is low. Whenever my blood work comes back as anemic, the first question they ask is do I have heavy periods. If it has tapered off, I would probably wait until I could see my own doctor, but I would be trying to increase my iron intake.

I agree if it doesn't seem to be tapering off, I'd go in to be seen - at least in some sort of urgent care clinic/ER. If you're dizzy, it means your blood flow has been reduced and you probably need extra fluids.
I've read that taking ibuprofen can help to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding but I'd only take that if you don't have any other health issues/medications.

I heard once that ibuprofen will slow things down some... It seems to work for me on a heavy day. With that said, what you're experiencing probably needs some attention. In the meantime the ibuprofen may at least give you a little relief.

I'm not one to run to the doctor immediately for period issues but the fact that you're dizzy and fatigued is alarming. If it doesn't start to taper off I'd go to urgent care or something similar that is open on the weekend.

I am the same age as you and I am no stranger to heavy bleeding.
For me it usually one day of super heavy bleeding followed by 6 days of it slowly lessening.
Since you mentioned it has tapered off I wouldn't rush right out to the ER.
However I would call the doctors office and tell them what you have told us. Especially the part where you are feeling dizzy.
I wouldn't sit on this all weekend without some type of communication with the doctors office, especially if you are worried.

Any thoughts would be appreciated and I'm sorry about the TMI. I think both of these bolded symptons are normal with heavy blood loss. I had many periods like this in my late 40s and the really heavy flow was 24-48 hours, so my inclination would be to eat iron rich foods and expect things to slow down. The first time this happened to me my period started early on a trip to Disneyland. FTR, I'm not a run to the doctor person and would have to be really sick before heading to her office on a Friday afternoon or Monday morning. Does your insurance have a 24 hour nurse's line? They have offered us great guidance in the past.

Yes, get to a doctor. I had that happen to me. My period was very heavy for almost 3 months...non-stop. I saw a doctor, and he scheduled me for an ablation. Before my surgery, I was walking down the hallway at home and got real dizzy. I called the ambulance, and ended up having to go the hospital. Enroute, my blood pressure dropped dangerously low. I ended up having the surgery early. I had to have a blood transfusion because I was so depleted. Which made what should have been a day surgery an over-night one.

Is it normal period blood or bright red (like an active bleed?) Dizziness can be very common with hormonal fluctuations, as can the heavy flow, particularly at your age. If it was me, I would make an appointment with my regular gyn for a checkup, but wouldn't consider the current state of affairs an emergency.

What is the advantage of not calling? You feel bad enough to post here. CALL.
I had periods like that during peri-menopause. I had to take iron supplements.
I love the phrase "crime scene" periods. That's what mine were like. I knew I had fibroids. Thankfully I hit menopause!

You should be seen to rule out anything bad so you can relax. It will also get the wheels in motion for any procedure like an ablation should you choose that route. I spent a year at that age with what you are describing. I remember that summer as "the one I didn't wear shorts or anything light colored" haha. Also made sure had a change of clothing with me. I was all ready to schedule an ablation (I refused to try IUD because of migraines) kept putting it off until one day magically "the periods disappeared". It was bizarre almost!

Don't wait too long. My sister had to have 3 transfusions to have enough blood for a hysterectomy.
Call, and if the bleeding stops, get to gyn next week.

I have heavy periods but yours sounds even heavier. I am normally tired and try to get more iron. I have never felt dizzy from mine though that sounds alarming. Changing an ultra tampon and pad every hour or half hour is normal for me on my heavy day . More than that is beyond crime scene. I hope you start feeling better and everything is ok. I also hope it slows down and you can get in to see your doc.

Wouldn't you WANT. To see the dr if it is heavy you have to cancel plans?... Are you looking forward to doing this again? Check in with your dr.

I had this happen once, I was on vacation yuck!, once was enough for me so I had uterine ablation, best thing ever. I did not want to be tied to the house/bathroom like that again. Sorry you are going through this

This is normal for me and I'm 53. It's been going on for a few years. I've missed work days and stay close to home for usually one day per month. I've seen my Dr. And was told it's normal for the age. I did email her once when it was really bad to see if I needed to come in... Nope. Perimenopause at its finest unfortunately. And fatigue is a big one for me too.

I would call at the very least. I had a very heavy period like this on and off for many months and finally had a fibroid surgery at around 45. But I was so anemic by the time I went in that I needed a few pints of blood before they could do the actual surgery. I think I should have gone in sooner.
Please do rest and try to get some iron supplements into yourself in the meantime. Best wishes and please keep us updated.
