This follow-up is to my thread about reacting to a black henna tattoo.I had my hair colored today for the first time since reacting so badly to the PPD (para-phenyldiamine) in the tattoo. My hairdresser and I did tons of research on options for permanent hair dye that was PPD-free. While banned in many countries, it is still present in the vast majority of permanent hair dyes used in the US. Some of the PPD-free dyes we found were more of a semi-permanent and several were very clear that they were not intended for coverage of gray hair. Hey, if you're not covering my gray, what's the point? We settled on EcoColors Professional Line. She used it on my hair today and so far, the results are excellent. It had this wonderful botanical smell (not chemically like dyes I've previously been colored with) and I had no tingling, burning, or any sensation while it was on my hair and scalp. The color turned out amazing -- just what we wanted. Her price to purchase it was in line with the brands she normally purchases for clients. We opted not to put any styling products on my hair after she washed it out so we could gauge that if there was any reaction, we would know it's related to the EcoColors. Now we just wait to see if the color holds up over time as well. I go every five weeks and that's always been satisfactory with the other dyes, so we'll see if this one holds up as well. Anyway, I just thought I'd share as others had mentioned having reactions to traditional hair dyes with PPD. Maybe my research can pay off for someone else.

Good to know. Thanks for the update. How did the tattoo area heal up?

The blistered area healed, the tattoo completely faded, and you can't even tell where it was now. Thank goodness!

Thank you for updating. I would love updates on how this new product lasts. My hairdresser has been foiling mine & I think it looks good, unless I am in a windstorm, then you can see more roots. She also uses some sort of Vaseline type barrier on my ears & around my face. I still react somewhat in my neck area. Also for the first 2 weeks I wash my hair in the sink & not in in the shower(use a shower cap) to make sure any leftover dye doesn't effect my skin. ( i had all over hives last year. Not fun.)
I am glad your tattoo area healed.

Good news! I appreciate the info; although I am not reacting badly to normal dyes I am always on the lookout for a natural option.
You don't mention any damage to your hair caused by colouring, but in the spirit of sharing info, I had my second round of colour with the olaplex treatment additive last week- this stuff is truly worth the cost. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the info. Please give us an update around the 5 week mark. I have a very sensitive scalp so I am going to see if my hairdresser can get this for me!

I'll look forward to hearing about your results too. While I've never had an issue, I'd rather go with something along that line. Thanks!

So far, I'm really impressed, but it's only been two weeks. My next appointment is scheduled in three weeks (I am used to going every five weeks with the other dye so that's what I'm hoping to get out of this one).

I hope it works well.
I have read that a lot of people who react to henna are actually allergic to the henna itself. I would never get one of those tattoos because I do have such sensitive skin. I do think they're really cool.
I don't know what colour safe products you already use, but I absolutely love Pureology. They are expensive, but they are worth the money. Especially for my red hair because it fades so quickly. I would also use it for blonde hair because it tends to go brassy. (that's what happens to my copper highlights)
I also love Bumble and Bumble--I buy this when I can't get to Ulta to get the Pureology because I can get it at Target or Sephora. I also LOVE their colour safe styling lotion and the hairdresser's oil UV/thermal prep (it doesn't weigh down my fine hair, but it makes it really shiny and silky)
I have also used Frederic Fekkai products, but the colour technician shampoo has the sulfates in it which dries my hair out. The colour technician deep conditioner mask is really great--I rub it on my scalp and comb it through my hair and leave it for a few hours or all night. Their sun protectant spray is also great.
