I went to the dentist today and it was recommended that I have this done. I am really nervous. Is there anything i can do before the appt (next month) that will make it easier? What was your experience like?

I had it done several times. It is really not a big deal - very similar to a cleaning, just with a little more effort. The only thing I did once was take Tylenol before - didn't make much of a difference.

Yes, years ago. They numbed me up and took care of it. My jaw was a little sore after from being open so long but that was it. It really helped a lot.

What can I do to avoid having to do it again? I'm not having issues right now but apparently the "pockets" are too deep (not sure what the terminology is). I was wondering about oil pulling?

I had it done. I'll just say that I didn't enjoy it, but it also didn't kill me. I've avoided having it done again by being very meticulous with my flossing and switching to a Sonicare toothbrush. My hygienist is very happy with me now!

flossing and a waterpik will reduce the pockets

Flossing and sonicare toothbrush. Floss floss and more flossing. And have your teeth cleaned every four months instead of six.

Thanks. You are making me feel better. . I've only had one cavity and hated the experience. I had her put some numbing gel on today before she did the bone testing and I hated that as well. I guess I don't like being numb. I almost got a little panicky because I felt like my throat was getting numb from swallowing the gel and I was worried about that. I survived though. Lol

How long did it take? They said they allow for two hours on each side but I can't imagine having my mouth open for that long and remaining calm.

I can't answer how long it will take but if you didn't know, they have a tool that will prop your mouth open. You shouldn't have to hold it open yourself for that long. (ETA: At least, I assume they will use that tool. I have not had planing done but they used that tool a lot when I was getting ortho and related work done.)

I have had one of those blcoks in my mouth, I think for a root canal or something...
I just had a scaling about 3 months ago. It was two visits...numbed up (shots) for each one. Then I had a follow up six weeks later. My gums had a huge improvement. Of course I am trying to floss at least once a day and waterpik a few times a week..also I do use a sonic care and have to go back after 3 months for now..
Its no big deal..just expensive and kind of draining. It can really help your gums if they have pockets in the danger zone. Good luck.

My dh had it done and he said it wasn't that bad (and he has real dental phobias).
I'll tell you what too, it really made a difference with his breath. My dh would get very bad breath and I always wondered why. After he had this done--no more.

I have had it done and didn't think it was too bad. I have a pretty sensitive mouth so I was a little nervous going into it also. They only did half of my mouth at a time. Which I would recommend. Can't imagine doing it all at once. They also numbed my mouth which I think helps a lot. I wouldn't want to do it without. I also get cleanings done every 3 to 4 months now. That really helps!

My dentist wanted me to do this because I have deep pockets in my gums. I asked to hold off until my next cleaning. I bought a Sonicare and flossed constantly. Went back and I was good, no longer needed the procedure. Before the Sonicare I was using a manual toothbrush.

Went back and I was good, no longer needed the procedure. Before the Sonicare I was using a manual toothbrush. Do you remember what your numbers were? I'm planning to do the above mentioned things and hope it makes a difference in how intense the procedure was. I also had intended to start oil pulling prior to yesterday's appointment to see if that would help but it didn't. I do have a sonicare toothbrush but don't use it regularly. I don't like how it feels when the back touches my teeth or certain places in my mouth. Maybe I just need to get used to it. Or are there different heads that are more comfortable than others?
