We had a similar situation once. When we were building our house, we asked about a certain non-standard type of siding. We had decided if it was a $5,000 or less upgrade from the basic stuff, we'd do it - more than that and we wouldn't. The builder quoted us just under $5K. We had actually expected it to be out of reach, so we asked if he was sure that was all it was - and he said yes.
Fast forward 9 months to when our house is almost done - siding is on - and we found out he missed a digit! It should have been $15,000 - and we would have said no. We paid the amount we had originally agreed on, but no part of the $10K difference. We had not a second of guilt over it, either. We asked him for a quote, even indicated perhaps he should double-check, and it was his sloppy work that caused the error.
Like all building projects, we were already over budget so close to the end, and there was no room at all for an extra $10K. The only circumstance I can imagine having paid any part of that amount would have been if he had managed to save us a bunch of money (without cutting quality) somewhere else. Then I might have been OK with paying up to whatever the difference was, but I certainly wouldn't have been happy about it.
