An intense line of thunderstorms, dropping as much as 3 inches of rain per hour, formed to the west/northwest of Houston last night and is moving very slowly into and through the Houston metro area. Schools in the area are closed and many bayous are at or near flood stage. Stay safe, everyone! People are very nervous in my neighborhood, which flooded badly in May 2015.

It poured all night long. They said on the news that the rainfall in the Greenspoint area has surpassed Allison. Stay inside and stay safe!

Just hearing from friends in Houston that it's been a very noisy night with thunderstorms, a lot of rain and there is a lot of water around in some places, just to add to rush hour chaos! Stay safe and hope it all quietens down soon weatherwise for you.

Looks like it is going to be a major event, given that some areas have already received 20+ inches!!!
I live 40 miles to the west of Houston, and we have received 12+ inches since 9pm last night!

I have been watching the news since 4:45 ish. Every media outlet is shouting "stay home" via tv, Twitter, Facebook, etc. and yet the tv is currently interviewing some nitwit who left from their neighborhood in the worst hit area to go to the airport and are now stuck. So they called the tv station to whine about it. I am losing patience and sympathy for people who intentionally put themselves in harms way and expect neighbors, first responders, etc to put themselves at risk to rescue their ignorant selves. People have water in their houses this morning, probably feet in some places, and these idiots waste resources and put others at risk because they are stupid. At some point Darwin rules need to go into effect.
This isn't a surprise, it has been talked about with increasing urgency since Friday. But yet the fire dept is making water rescues because people are freaking idiots. They can't help the people who have water in the house, who have the kids up on the countertops, who are trying to keep Nana's oxygen tank dry, because they are out rescuing idiots.
And then the women on the neighborhood Facebook group - is ABC school closed? Yes the district is closed. What about DEF school? Is the intersection of X and Y flooded? Probably so. Unless your transportation needs involve some medical emergency - childbirth, heart attack - then you can wait for both daylight and the water to go down. SMH.
If you're safe and dry, stay put. Save the emergency resources for the people that need it.

I am on the 24th floor of a building in the galleria area (sage/rice/Richmond).... The lightning and wind remind me of a hurricane. I can't believe those trying to get onto Rice/Richmond. I was supposed to be in Kingwood at 7am...that didn't happen. Glad I can work from anywhere!
I have a flight out tomorrow and am a bit worried of getting out even tomorrow at IAH.
Stay safe fellow Houstonians....this is not good.

Keep safe Teaxas peas. Sending good thoughts your way that the storms end soon.
Is it suppose to hit the San Antonio area? My DS is an insurance adjuster and he volunteered to go to Texas for two weeks to help with all the claims from the hail storm. Now you have me worried about him being on the road in unfamiliar areas that may get flash flooding.

DH was supposed to drive to Lafayette this morning for work, but he's gone back to bed. Nobody with a brain is out on the roads this morning if they don't have to be. I do feel for the critical need folks who have to try to get in to the medical center.

It's awful out there! The house phone woke me up about 6 am when DH's company robo-called to tell him to stay home this morning. He told me he wasn't planning to go in with this mess anyway. Our neighborhood did get rain Sunday evening, but just missed the heavy stuff so I went to bed thinking all was well. HA! After I went to bed at midnight it just parked itself on top of us. DH has been up since 4 am. He said that was when it was the worst, with the heaviest rain he's ever seen and really bad winds. It was still heavy when I got up, but not as bad. Looks like it is going to be a major event, given that some areas have already received 20+ inches!!! I live 40 miles to the west of Houston, and we have received 12+ inches since 9pm last night! Glub...glub...glub... jamh Are you having flooding in your area? We keep our small plane near Sealy and access is a gravel road. I told DH it will probably be awhile before we can get out there. I just hope the hangar doesn't flood because we have a good bit of furniture stored there.

DS did a happy dance when I told him the school was closed. I only work a little over a mile away but I don't think I can get out of my neighborhood since Newcastle is flooded, so I'll be working from home today. I sure wish I went grocery shopping yesterday!

DH went with me and we were amazed at the number of people in there. He'd stopped by Saturday and said it was nearly empty in comparison. They were just talking about your bayou Merge. Hope it isn't as bad as they are thinking. Stay safe everyone!

There is some flooding on the roads but we are business as usual. The rain is supposed to linger all week. I feel bad for the people who have holes in their roof from the and now have to deal with torrential rain. I'm so glad we aren't getting the amount of rain Houston is getting. Good luck ladies.

That was a first. They just showed someone's patio floating down the bayou. The flooding is so bad it just lifted up the concrete pad and floated it away! We had a short lull, long enough to get the dog out for a potty break. Now it is raining heavy again. I am tempted to ditch my session with my trainer at 10 am, but since I live a whole block away from the gym I doubt I could say I was flooded in!

I just had to rescue our [full] city issued trash can. Our street never floods, but it is today and the can tried to float away. Not sure where the bag full of grass clippings that was on the curb for pickup went.

Stay safe? Does anyone know how it is in the Katy area? I have a friend there and she and her kids are home and she says they are safe but I worry. She tends to downplay things!

Austin has had a ton of rain but so far the flooding is localized. Many school districts cancelled, others are a 2-hour delay, and city offices are on a delay. DD's school cancelled after she left with DH for a doctor's appointment that was supposed to be at 9 - meanwhile, the doctor hasn't come in yet. (Which I can understand, but you'd kind of think they'd notify the patients somehow.)
Stay safe, Houston area, and every place else getting this deluge!

We never have flooding in our neighborhood since our drainage was improved several years ago, so I'm thankful for that.

Well, she can burn off some extra calories perhaps? My trainer cancelled because he couldn't make it in. But I could still go in if I were so inclined (which I'm not!). It is literally a block away and we don't have any street flooding where we are.

Sounds pretty bad....Time for TV and comfort food!

Fortunately, I'm in an area that doesn't flood. The Community College I teach at is closed and I'm happy about that because I don't want my students driving in this and also because I'm exhausted. I didn't get any sleep last night between my dogs freaking out due to the thunder and my phone ringing with constant weather alerts.
I'm so sad for one of my friends in Katy. She has breast cancer and was going to have a double mastectomy this morning. Her surgeon called early this morning and said the surgery would have to be postponed because the surgical team couldn't make it to the hospital. My heart really breaks for her, because she had prepared herself mentally and was ready to get the surgery over and done with.

I'm in Pearland where it's bad but not nearly as bad as other areas. Our school district didn't cancel. I heard a man being interviewed on the radio from the Houston Flood Management say that even if it were to stop raining now that it would take at least 36 hours to go down!
