I wish we had an extra bedroom so DH and I could have our own! As it is now, when DH isn't traveling for work, he usually falls asleep on the couch in the family room. I sleep much better alone and the times we do sleep together I usually wake up a lot. My goal for our retirement home is to have separate bedrooms. We've been married almost 27 years and I hope we make it at least 27 more years!

We don't have separate rooms but when our son is away at college my DH sleeps in his room. When he's home sometimes DH sleeps on the sofa. We have been married 26 years. I don't see a problem. When I go to bed I like to sleep. He likes to read and watch TV. One of the best things about being married for a long time is that you can feel free to do what you like to do and the other person doesn't see it as a marital threat.

I think it's much more common than you'd think. My parents never slept in the same room due to my father's snoring, I never found it a big deal. I moved to the couch in the family room due to hubby's excessive snoring. He wouldn't move and pitched a huge fit over the move...for some reason it was more important for to share a bed, even though I wasn't getting any sleep It's so bad that I can hear him through the floor still (and i'm not directly under the room ) Anyway back to more common than you'd think....one of my Aunt's was visiting and mentioned she and hubby had separate bedrooms, perfectly happy couple. We recently attended my Aunt/Uncle's 50th anniversary and they asked the key to 50 years and she said separate bedrooms, lol! She elaborated, he says she snores, he pokes to stop, etc. She says they moved to separate bedrooms and he can come say "hello" as she puts it, but they both get a good night's sleep. It seems to be fairly common.

My husband was talking to a local contractor a few weeks ago, and he also said more and more homes are being built with two master bedrooms just for this reason. Separate bedrooms wasn't uncommon up to a hundred years ago or so, for those who could afford them, and it looks like they are making a comeback. It really is a necessity for us. I have a hard time sleeping through the night, and we both snore. DH has had sleep studies done and he's fine, just a loud snorer, but I just can't sleep in the same room with the noise.

I told my DSO I would like my own room one week a month for that time. He wasn't that keen on being apart from me for that long. It was just a thought LOL
