I was at our mall today and as I was walking to my car I noticed a small duffel bag near my car. I got in my car but I kept thinking *I need to tell someone to check it out* because, if something bad was in it, I would never forgive myself. I see 2 mall security guys standing outside Macys chatting so drive up to them. I asked them if they were mall security and they said yes. They looked to be about 15 years old but whatever. I told them what I had seen and they asked me if I looked to see what was in yet. HELLO ~ that's why I'm telling you about it. So I said *no* I thought I'd let you check it out. So they thanked me and, as I drove off, they went back to standing where they were and chatting. Now, maybe they were on a break, but it didn't inspire me to have much confidence in them.

Yeah, that's always been my perception of mall security. Still, with recent events, that's just inexcusable on their part.

I have never had much faith in mall security. we have a client who is a mall cop. nice as he is, I have no faith in his ability to protect me or thwart a crime.

I've never seen the movie but the first thing that comes to mind is Paul Blart.

Yeah, mall security is a joke. A mom I recognized from school was working at ACE Hardware and 2 months later she was a mall security guard. Ridiculous. We've had armed robberies outside our mall in a southwest suburb of Chicago. Scary.

our store is located on a plaza outside the mall. I have been absolutely dismayed and disgusted by their security and the city police. And that is after a shooting in the mall and armed robberies outside it.
A couple of months ago, one of those "harmless" (according to the cops) panhandlers who troll the parking lots tried to get into my car while I was in it. Thankfully, i always keep my doors locked. When I told mall security, it took over an hour for a 100 year old guy to show up and tell me it was too late to do anything about it. Cops never came because mall security told them there was no evidence e of a crime. We see drug deals openly going on all day long and if the cops do show up, they do nothing. lt is in a good part of town, but if security and the cops don't start giving a damn, it's going to slide down fast.

My dad was mall security. I don't believe that he had training on how to defuse a bomb or anything. I think the primary reason that he was employed was to have a visible security guard, and that for the most part, he was to call police if there was anything complicated. He didn't start working in the job until he was in his mid 50s, so, while he was in the military for ten years, I don't think he was hired based on his physical abilities. He had been working at a desk for 25 years at that point.

At the time, he was working 9-5 at a desk job, getting off work, and then working a 6PM-2AM security shift. We had financial problems, and he was working two jobs to keep us afloat. I know this was meant as humor, but I am going to say, it kind of stings for me.

Of course some of them are lazy jerks, just like in any profession, but I knew a very nice man who took a job doing mall security when he was laid off from a very good job. He was made fun of and picked on and insulted all the time at that mall and all he was trying to do was feed his family. I felt really bad for him.

I think security is a misnomer. My understanding is that most retail "security" is actually loss prevention. Security for the merchandise. Now, in a mall, I'm sure some of it is handling minor disturbances, but definitely not a "security guard" like their dress and title might indicate. I've read quite a bit on store security/LP (I don't know why I find it fascinating), and lots of the training they receive is specifically not to put themselves or others in harms way and to involve law enforcement if there is an issue that is more serious. I would expect they would call in the suspicious item to police, not handle it themselves.

They aren't police officers. They are mostly used as a deterrent to loss prevention. In a serious situation with an armed suspect, what exactly do you think they are going to do? It's a unappreciated job that gets no respect as evidenced by this thread.

My first reaction was, OMG, your dad is Paul Blart!! But then I didn't want to post that because I didn't want to disrespect your dad. But then, I thought, well, I LOVE Paul Blart so I hope you make that connection in the positive, cool way it is intended.

Oh, you'd think that, wouldn't you? "See something, say something?" The homeless in my community constantly leave their stuff unattended. So there are all these random duffle bags and shopping bags around the downtown streets, sometimes under benches, sometimes next to a tree, sometimes up against a freaking building. I know the cops know they're there, so I feel like they wouldn't come if called, but dang. It seems like SUCH a security hazard.

Could be worse they could be on their phone while driving around the parking lot in a golf cart not paying any attention to other cars - it was early in the day before the mall actually opened but there were still people driving in the parking lot obviously since I saw him. I was tempted to take a photo and send it to someone at the mall he could have hit someone. I have ate no faith in the security at our mall they do have a police department office there to so I guess they are security? It's the actual city PD I dont one think anyone expected them to defuse a bomb but maybe to call the police to check it out. not it at the mall but at a local CVS a "harmless" creep bought a fifth of whiskey and then hit a women over the head and killed her in front of everyone including her daughter. No mention of any altercation just crazy person. He is in jail but her poor family and friends. Stories about his strange behavior has been going around on FB but since he never actually threatened anyone law enforcement couldn't do anything. His parents had tried to get him help but he was in his thirties so mental services could do nothing .

This is NOT the case at the Mall of America. I have witnessed the security there being very vigilant. I am sure they have far more training that the average mall security officer.

Mall Security is there to observe and report. They can't detain anyone unless a store is going to press charges against a shoplifter, our guards are unarmed and are instructed not to approach anyone with a gun or knive or weapon of any kind. They are told to call the police and keep people away. Most of them have radio phones to call police. I happen to work for a shopping center and I'm not going to say they are the best guards out there, because our mall is in a pretty good location with not that much going on. We are also lucky we have a great police department that is quick to respond. The problem we have at our mall (and probably most malls) are irresponsible teens. The trouble they cause. They pull out plants and have plant fights in our park area, put bubbles in our fountain, they yell and scream in the mall and swear at people as they walk by, and so on. Our guards can ban kids from coming back to the mall for 3 months or more. I will ask our security director what he would do if someone reported a bag in the parking lot.

Not post about it here.

I talked to our security director today and gave him your scenario and asked him what he would have done. He said he would have looked at the bag and if it looked suspicious (taped, weird shaped or whatever) he would call PD immediately and let them take over from there. If it looked like a bunch of clothes or whatever, they would have 2 guards go through it to inventory it and see if there is any I.D. If there was they would contact the person. If not, they would put it in lost and found for 30 days. If no one claims it and it's clothes, we donate to the salvation army.

Yeah, if I was getting paid $7.25/hr I wouldn't look in the bag either!
