We are on vacation in Orlando this week. As an early Fathers Day gift the kids and I took my husband to a gun place that allows you to shoot automatic weapons. Dh had been in the Marine Corps and he would be able to shoot stuff guns that he hadn't been able to touch since he was in. He *was* concerned that it might be a little insensitive with what happened though. I thought about it too, but it isn't like we have this opportunity at home, and I had planned it prior to the Pulse incident.
while we were there a crew from the French version of NPR was interviewing the owner and they took footage of dh shooting and interviewed him as well. As an American, I was kind of glad they got to talk to him and not someone who could have made Americans look bad.

Sounds like a great present for a Marine! Hope he enjoyed it.

By 'gun place' I assume you mean some kind of private business and really can not see why (in a country where you can buy, carry and shoot guns) you would feel that way. The timing was not great given the publicity, but if this was an arranged activity for someone who is comfortable around firearms and could teach most of us a thing or two about how to carry and use them, I don't think you should feel bad about carrying on with your plans.

I think shooting in a safe, regulated business with proper procedures is entirely different from wandering round the streets with a gun. It's always good to think about how things might be perceived, but even this anti-gun European pea thinks you're ok with this one

My USMC dad would have loved that sort of gift. Bet your DH did, too.

I'm curious about the questions the French NPR people might have asked your husband! Do you remember any?

they have fully automatic weapons? Or semi automatic? Many people do not understand the difference.

Thank him for me and my husband for his service. My husband was Air Force and was in Viet Nam for two years...

They asked him his thoughts about what occurred in Orlando, how he felt about gun control, why he was there shooting, that kind of thing. Oh, okay-- regular insightful things. I guess I should have been tipped off by "NPR" but I was thinking maybe they were going to be weird tabloidy questions or something. I hope he enjoyed his time at the range AND the interview--both unique experiences!
