Been living outside DC for almost a year now, and have not been inside the White House. No desire at all. That does not mean I haven't seen the exterior many times, and I have been to many of the sites that others have mentioned as well. Come to think of it, haven't been up inside the Washington Monument either. Again, no desire to at all. See it up close nearly every day. Maybe if there were ever a parking spot nearby, and a person holding up a huge sign reading "No wait to go inside...Come on over", I would take 15 minutes to do just that. But otherwise, just no. It's probably been 20 years since I've done the White House tour, so I don't know how much it has changed. But the thing that struck me most was how small it is. You see it on TV with wide angle lenses and it looks so big. But it really isn't. I'd say it's worth the hassle. And I haven't done the Washington Monument in probably 20 some years as well. It's pretty cool, but takes planning ahead to reserve tickets. You can go the morning of and get tickets as well (I think they hold 50% back for same day tickets), but you have to get up too early for my taste! If you want the view and a quicker line, go to the Old Post Office. The view is pretty similar and you get to see (literally) the bats in the belfry.

Gooseberry Falls is one of my favorite places. I love wading in a waterfall! We're a military family and like to travel. So we see most of the famous places in an area that we move to. We live in DC now and I've been to most of the big attractions, but have never been to the Kennedy Center. DD and I are planning to see a play there before we move again! Oh gosh, what a great resource the Kennedy Center is. I go with my dgd to nearly every family theater production they have, and so much more. I hear Kinky Boots is really fun right now. Tip: If you want to save money, park at the Watergate instead. Easy, easy walk and you will save $10 or more. Not sure if you have younger kids, but all their "festivals" have been excellent. They just do things right. ETA: Cyndi Lauper did the music and lyrics. I'm off to check it out now!

Statue of Liberty Ellis island Highline 9/11 Memorial I'm sure there's a bunch more but these are the ones that popped in my head. Just curious- when you have out of town guests, do they want to do touristy NYC things?

Lots. I live in Annapolis, MD. and that is a lot of historical places here and a lot of tourist spots. I've been to a few but I also hate crowds. I've taken visitors that we've had over the years to several. I should get out during the Spring or Fall and go then, but it always seems like there is something else to do. You know how it is. But it's something I should focus on. I'm sure I would enjoy it if I did go.

Just curious- when you have out of town guests, do they want to do touristy NYC things? Most of my out of town guests are family who just come to visit with the family or go sightseeing on their own. Although, one of my cousins from Ireland was here 20+ years ago and she said she wanted to see the Statue of Liberty among other things.* So my sister and I spent a day touring all over Manhattan with her. When we got to where the line is the for the ferry to the Statue of Liberty, she stood at the railing for a while looking at the statue then turned around and said "ok, that's good." Ha! *one of the other things was St Patrick's Cathedral. Not for the architecture or reverence of it but because she had recently read a book where someone was murdered behind the alter and she wanted to see that spot. LOL

I have not been to Graceland since Elvis died and they turned it into a museum. Before he died, we used to go up and look at the house and you could even walk around the front yard, but we have never done the whole tourist thing there. Maybe next year for the 40th anniversary of his death.
