I am visiting my cousin in Utah right now and have had super sharp chest pain last night and today. It feels like a strangulation over my heart and is worse when I lay down. I am also nauseated and have been for awhile and dizzy. I have asthma that hasn't been all that controlled lately. (I've failed breathing tests) I'm a bit hesitant because I have anxiety and today is Father's Day which is super tough for me. My insurance would cover it. (I called to check) Would you go in or sit it out? I took pepto and aspirin to cover my bases.

Your insurance will cover it so I think that takes away any excuse I can come up with for not going. I too have anxiety so I get it that you are hesitant. Go.

If you husband or SO had expressed to you those symptoms, what would you tell them? Go to the ER -- women also have heart attacks and ours have a tendency to present differently than a man's

Okay. I know it's not rational but I don't want to spoil my cousin's Father's Day. But I guess it would be worse if it was a heart attack and I did nothing. He's at church for another hour. I'll have him take me when he gets back. I feel too dizzy to drive.

Call 911. Explain to them that you are from out of town, but alone at the moment, and need an EMT because you are having chest pains. They will stay on the phone with you until someone arrives.
While you are waiting, leave your cousin a note somewhere that he will find it.
Hope you are feeling better soon!

Please go and get checked. Is there someone else who could drive/accompany you without having to wait for your cousin to return?

Go, by ambulance if necessary. He will have other father's days but you only have one life.

Yes, go to the ER because of the nausea. I had two myocardial infarction episodes last year; neither of them looked like heart attacks, all I could do was say, "I don't feel well." Go. It won't ruin your Father's Day.

Hopefully, you have already called an ambulance. This is not something that should wait for an hour.

Yep, I would go now. It could be something simple and minor (when I had similar symptoms it was costochondritis and nothing more) but if it were me I would want to know.

It could be a gallbladder attack from your description of it being worse lying down accompanied by nausea and a sharp pain, but as a responsible cardiac nurse I would tell you to go to the ER. You won't know for sure until you have testing done.
ETA pericarditis (inflammation of the sac around the heart) is a possibility. That often causes sharp pains that are alleviated by sitting up. So, you need to be seen to sort it all out.

Hope you have answers & are feeling better soon. I thinking opting for ER is a wise decision. Several years ago a friend ignored symptoms for over a week. One day she could not longer ignore the symptoms, was rushed to ER & suffered a massive heart attack. She's very fortunate to have survived. She definitely taught us all to never ignore symptoms, esp those that could be life threatening. Many times it might be indigestion, anxiety or a stomach virus; however, there might be that one time when it's a more serious situation.
Good luck!

It's good that you're going. Even if it's pericarditis you need treatment, because pericarditis can lead to a very bad outcome. I didn't have dizziness or nausea w/pericarditis, but did have your other symptoms. Always rule out a heart attack first and then go backwards. Please let us know how you're doing.

Thanks everyone. They did an EKG and got an IV port in. The EKG looks good but I'm tachycardiic and for sure dehydrated. I had some tummy problems earlier in the week but I thought about I made up for it when I drank water before I was nauseated.

I'm waiting on blood work and the chest xray. The nitro hurt my heart pretty bad initially.
