I take medication for hyperthyroidism. About a year and a half ago the Sr had me on 15 MG of the drug I take. It mad eme tires, lethargic, and just plain blah. I gained 35 pounds in 3 months due to being lethargic and my metabolism slowing down due to the meds...I have not gotten it off.
The meds at the time swung me the other way, yo the point where the tests showed I was super hypothyroid instead of hyper. Dr dropped me to 5 MG and when I was still hypo, dropped me to 2.5.
After 12 weeks I tested just barely into the hyper range again. Dr upped my meds to 5mg. One test now reads normal, other still shows hype.
He upped my meds to 10 mg and now I want to sleep all the time. I have very little energy and what I do have is spent quickly. I do my best to muddle through the day.
I am supposed to stay on this for 6 weeks and then have bloodwork redone. Should I wait it out or would you call now?
The only thing that really gives me pause is that it is allergy season and I am taking allergy meds that could be contributing to the tiredness.

Were the allergy meds prescribed by the same dr you see for your thyroid? I'm just wondering if they're interacting in some way?

I might give it a week or two but I'm not sure I'd be waiting 6 weeks to get retested with that level of tiredness. Might be worth a call to the dr's office to check?

Since you are also taking allergy meds, I would wait on contacting the doctor's office.

Why would you NOT call? The doctor may tell you to be patient and wait, but I would call my doctor in a heartbeat.

Why would you NOT call? The doctor may tell you to be patient and wait, but I would call my doctor in a heartbeat. Exactly that. I wouldn't even hesitate. All of our doctors are amazing, and they would rather I call/text/portal than not. Hope you get an effective answer and feel better!

15 to 5 to 2.5 to 5 to 10
I'd be considering a new doctor.

How long have you been taking the allergy medication? I take both allergy medication and medication for my hypothyroid, and have been for years. They are supposed to work together. If you are that tired I suspect it is your thyroid medication that isn't working properly. Finding the right balance for thyroid medication is difficult, and yes I do understand that you've been diagnosed with hyperthyroid. I've seen a lot of doctors over the years (probably at least 10) and many of those were endocrinologists. I would say from my experience that the endocrinologists were the worst. My answer for you is yes, do not hesitate to call your doctor now. Don't let him/her try to convince you that you don't know your own body. How long has it been since you were diagnosed hyperthyroid? There's a great book and website called www.stopthethyroidmadness.com It has a ton of information in it that really helps you to understand what is going on, what tests you need to ask for and make sure you get (just the TSH test is useless) and much more. I finally ended up with a special doctor called an Integrative Medicine doctor. He is a board certified Internist but he also practices natural approaches and alternative strategies. It wasn't until I saw this doctor that I finally got my hypothyroid properly treated and he diagnosed me with adrenal insufficiency and is treating me for that. Some traditional doctors don't even believe that exists. He is so much in demand he doesn't take insurance so I have to pay out of my pocket, but it's worth it to me. I do get reimbursed a bit from my insurance. People travel from over an hour away to see this doctor. I'm sorry you are feeling so terrible, and I hope you are on the path to wellness soon. Debbie in MD.

I'm just wondering if they're interacting in some way? no, but he knows I take them as I listed then when I first started seeing him (he is an endocrinologist ) I would call my pharmacist and ask for his/her take on whether the allergy meds might be interfering with the thyroid meds. I don't mean for this be to a knock on doctors at all, but I find I get better drug info from the pharmacists.

How long ago did they make the most recent change?
I am hypo, and I know it takes a few weeks before a change in medication shows up in the tests. So if it hasn't been a few weeks, I would wait it out. Unless you are miserable. If you are miserable, go right away no matter what.
I feel great sympathy for you...it sounds like you've been through the wringer with your thyroid.

I took a short 10 min nap and now, 8 hours after I took the meds, I am finally waking up.

I have Graves disease and have had my thyroid ablated. I was never given medication until after the ablation. It took forever (as in 5 years) to really feel that I could be considered stable on my meds. I did blood work every 6 weeks for almost that whole time. What I did figure out is that I realized where I feel better. Not just a lab value. I like my TSH being around 1. 2 puts me down. .8 makes my hair fall out and my brain is foggy. When I was pregnant, I had an OB tell me that I was crazy to be able to say that my blood work would be off. I proved him wrong and refused to see him again. I was WAY off. Pretty easy to tell...
The 6 weeks is an industry standard sort of thing. While I wholeheartedly believe that you should be able to ask for help if you need it, my gut says they will tell you that you have to be on it for 6 weeks.
You have my sympathy as well. It can really suck.
