Hubby wants to buy the bands because somebody else told him the pills would make your stomach upset. He is taking DS on a fishing trip.
If you've used the bands what brand and did they work or not work for you?
If you've used the pills what brand do you recommend? Any side effects?
Any other ways to combat sea sickness?
Thanks!

My girls and I have never had the pills make our stomach upset. We buy the Bonine chewables so we can take anytime, anywhere. They work and work fast.
I have the bands (Sea Bands is the brand) and they do work, but they put pressure on the spot (like acupressure) and they can get uncomfortable after awhile. If I was fishing or on a cruise, rather than a short boat jaunt, I would take Bonine.

I always use Bonine and make sure I keep some food on my stomach. I've never had a stomach upset issue. it does need to be taken about an hour before boarding.

I agree the Bonine chewables are good to use for motion sickness.

I picked up some motion sickness options for DH before a salmon fishing trip last year. I didn't have much notice, so no time to do any research. He did wear the wristband, but thought the ginger gum worked best and shared that with the other guys. I can't remember the brands, but if you have a Walgreens nearby, it is whatever they carry.

The pills (meclizine) are the only thing that works for my mom. I take it for vertigo. They don't upset our stomachs, but they can make you sleepy. Also, you need to take it before getting on the boat.
DH tried the patch and that worked for him, but my SIL had a horrible reaction to it. On our second cruise DH just used the pills and he was fine.

Ever since having my 3rd I've had terrible problems with motion sickness. We went on a fishing trip last year. I took Dramamine. I had zero problems with it and it worked like a charm. My brother took it too, it worked for him and as far as I know he also had zero problems. This year I am pregnant again, so the Dramamine is out. I bought the Sea Bands yesterday, and will be praying that they work. My sister in law swears they do, but she prefers alt treatments to pharmacology and I feel like some of her successes are psychosomatic. We're supposed to go fishing on Wed. If he hasn't left yet I can pop back on to let you know how they worked.

When ds was in the Coast Guard he said they would suck or chew on candied ginger. It would settle their stomachs.

So, the main reason I hate flying is because of the motion sickness. More dizzy, less sick to stomach. I take non drowsy dramamine and it helps a little. Last time I added in the sea bands and I thought they helped as well. Not enough that I could read or watch a video yet, but more than the dramamine alone. It could be all in my head, but who cares how it works? I'd frankly use both the bands and a medication.
I did also have my doctor prescribe something for nausea (she gave me fast dissolve ondansetron), which came in handy when we hit some turbulence.

I'm assuming that you will be on the ocean? Most people are ok in calm weather on land locked lakes.
Meclizine is the non drowsy formula of Dramamine. I find that it makes me really sleepy the next day, but I'm fine the day I take it. You need to take it BEFORE you need it. If you are having real problems, it won't help after the nausea starts. Stay out in the fresh air, preferably where you can watch the horizon. It helps the brain orient itself. If you go into the cabin, it will only make things worse.
There is a patch that you can wear behind the ear that is supposed to be the best. But it's prescription only, at least in the US.

I've tried the bands.... meh. Maybe they worked a little?? Ginger is good... again, maybe worked a little? dramamine.... made me tired so I was nauseous and tired. bonine..... maybe worked a little. I WAS a marine biology major. After being sea sick on every single outing despite trying the bands, ginger, dramamine, bonine, I changed my major. Can't study the ocean if you get sick out on it! With my last pregnancy, I was super nauseous after delivery and they gave my everything possible to help and nothing worked. Finally I got the scope patch. Worked like a charm! I'd go for the patch if you can.

If he is on there and in spite of the above precautions is still feeling sea sick, tell him not to go below deck and stay mid boat, as the bow and stern tend towards more movement.
Hopefully the fishing will be good and take his mind off of any queasy feelings.

My son & DH use Dramamine. DS gets car sick. DH gets seasick in certain situations and also suffers motion sickness on some amusement rides.

Dramamine is actually an anti-emetic (it used to say so on the box; it might still) - meaning it is the opposite of things that make your stomach upset, it actually can be taken to help someone stop vomiting, even if the cause isn't due to motion sickness.
I get motion sick, but did just fine on Thursday being out on a Jon Boat fishing all day on a lake. What type of fishing are they doing?

I agree- the patch is the only solution that works for me. Your doctor should have no problem prescribing it for you.

They will be ocean fishing. DH said he just ordered the bands. He will also get the chews and gum. I agree with staying on deck in the fresh air. Thank you all for your suggestions.

I get all kinds of motion sick. My doc gives me Zofran (ondansetron) and it really works for me with no side effects. I also use it any time I have anesthesia. It has made my life much more pleasant.

Stare at the horizon. It doesn't move and this can help with symptoms if the pills and patches aren't cutting it.

I've taken Dramamine and it always works fine. I've never had an upset stomach taking it. I've been on a couple cruises and several deep sea fishing trips and the only time I've gotten sick was when I didn't take it.

If he hasn't left yet I can pop back on to let you know how they worked. I think you'll find dramamine is safe during pregnancy; I am sure I used it eons ago. It's a category B drug, so there's no evidence of harm when used during pregnancy. You could call your doctor's office if you wanted an official answer. I used to work phone triage for an OB, so we'd get lots of calls like this. OP, no way would I rely on just the bands. Thing is, you don't know what will work for someone. So I like to suggest having several options available. If the trip is many hours or days long, I'd get the patch as one option (it is prescription; works well for me with minimal side effects, though I don't know if it's used for kids), but also dramamine or meclizine (both are OTC). You really don't want dh or ds getting seasick; it is just the worst.

I get sea sick looking at a boat. Bonnine doesn't have the side effects that Dramimine has the bands were useless for me. I start taking Bonnine a few days before my trip which has been working really well for me.

I adore whale watching but have horrid seasickness. Finally one outfit offered me the advice that was a game changer.
She said take the first dose of Bonine the night before. Get up for a morning trip, eat breakfast and take another dose.
For the FIRST time ever I did not feel sick. What a difference.
I've done it that way since then, and am so grateful for that tip.

I use the wrist bands and they work well for me. I have no idea what brand they might be--I've had them about 10 years.
I used to use Dramamine. It works but knocks me out. When I used it for flying, if I took a full tablet, I was asleep before the plane pulled away from the terminal. I finally learned that 1/4 tablet worked for a short flight and kept me functional. (At the time I was flying for my job and had to take a 1 1/2 hour flight on a regular basis.)
