Hi I am in my late 40s now and I washed my hair a few nights ago and it dried curly. Ok it's a weird thing I have always had stick straight hair and I permed it until 2004 or so(?) I can't remember. Well it is drying curlier and curlier. I put gel in it yesterday morning to hold the curl and it did. I don't wash it every day as I don't want to dry it out. Well today I misted it with water and the curls are back. I used to tell people longingly how I love their curly hair and they don't know how much I prayed for curly hair. I HAVE IT! It took my entire life to get curly hair, but the curls are ringlets and they are big and curly.
I can't tell you how happy this makes me! I do still straighten it sometimes for a change, but for now I am loving the curls!
Did anyone else have hair that went curly later in life? This is the funnest thing that has happened to me in a long time! (I should say my Dad's family all have/had curly hair. I got my mother's family's hair.)

mine was almost straight as a child - had just the hint of a wave - but it got wavier and then curlier with each pregnancy and now I'm in my mid 40s, it's quite curly indeed

My DD had straight hair as a child. Beginning at age 13, she permed her hair for many years. She has now stopped perming it because she claims it's now "naturally" very curly.
But I learned in school that straight and curly hair are intrinsically different (if you look at a cross section under a microscope, the hair shafts do not look the same), so the genes for that trait must be different. (I suppose, however, that there could be multiple genes controlling that trait. I have straight hair, and my DH has curly hair, so she had a chance to inherit either type.) I don't see how a person's hair could really change its basic (genetic) characteristics.
Hoping to learn more from this strand, er, thread.

I'm pretty sure hair shape is determined by the shape of the hair follicle shape which can change due to hormonal change, so while you can inherit curly hair you can also get curly hair later from hormonal shifts. Classic example, hair changing with pregnancy.

My hair was stick straight for 3 years, and oldest DS had straight hair until he was 5. We both have curls now

I had ringlets as a toddler, but as I aged it was just wavy. When puberty hit it got currier. Then even curlier after each pregnancy. Now I have tight spiral curls.

Mine used to be very naturally curly. People used to love to touch my hair and tell me how lucky I was. Tell that to a teen in high school living in humid NOLA when the look is straight with bangs. Back then we didn't have *products* and hair appliances like we do now. I've lost a lot of the natural curl but if I blow it dry with a diffuser I can get it pretty curly.

Mine did after my first pregancy. It had waves but curled right up about a month after oldest was born. It's awesome but man being down south I have some ritzy hair on humid days. That's what messy bun and a side braid ae made for.

My hair has always been wavy (in all different directions!) and thick. In the last couple of years the wave doesn't seem quite so obvious but I've put that down the the length 'straightening' it. I'm not worried about hair thinning though, I can afford to lose a bit

My DD, almost 16, had board straight hair. Until puberty. She went through a phase where her hair probably made people think I neglected her. It was awful. I was embarrassed. She was embarrassed. And over about 12-15 months, it turned into beautiful, ringlet curls. She loves it! Everyone loves it! We live in Florida. The key was finding a stylist who can cut curly hair and the right products.

For me, after pregnancy as well. It was always wavy, but most definitely became curlier after dd was born.

I have layers cut in to my very straight hair. Using salt spray and letting it dry naturally results in beachy curls, I love it and it's gives my hair a break from heat styling.

I had stick straight hair as a kid, thick, thick, thick...and wouldn't hold a curling iron curl for more than a minute. Perms from age 12-27 and then kept my hair fairly short for years. At 47 I had a short angled bob and started growing it out longer and every day it was getting harder and harder to straighten smooth. Let it go naturally and this is what I ended up with. I kept growing it and it is now past my shoulders and I love it. I understand the dominant gene theory so not sure how you explain this. I just blame it on hormones! Attachments:

yup, the same thing happened to me, too. I had long hair as a little girl, and it was straight, with maybe just a bit of a wave. Got it cut in about third grade--?? so it was short until middle school when I grew it to about shoulder length. I permed my hair all thru high school and college (1980s and 1990s, the time of the spiral perm). When I was in my late 20s and I stopped getting perms, I found out it was naturally curly! I'm 47 now, and while it's now getting gray and coarse, it's still curly. I don't know why it happened- hormonal changes??
I've learned to embrace the curl, and have a good hairstylist who cuts it (and thins it, a lot) to bring out the curl.
Enjoy your curls!!
eta: the length / weight of my hair will weigh down the curl somewhat, but the hair underneath, close to my neck will dry into the most perfectly shaped ringlets-- I love them!! (the humidity kills it, though, and turns it into a big frizz ball-- I'm glad it's really dry here most of the time.)

I inherited my mothers fine, thin, stick-straight hair (and not much of it, either).
It wasn't until I was in my 50's, that one day my hairstylist was standing behind me messing around, running her fingers thru my clean, wet hair when all of a sudden she said "you have curly hair." I said "What?". She said - "You're hair" "It's curly". It was a pretty comical conversation going back-and-forth with her saying my hair hair was curly and me going "what?" LOL
She said she has seen many hair changes on clients due to pregnancy, chemo, other illnesses and menopause. Mine went from fine and straight to fine and curly.
I now wear it short, with layers to bring out the curls. I can and do occasionally "straighten" it (it doesn't take much because my curls are very loose.) I use sea salt spray and some curl enhancing gel and I get a tousled, beachy curl look, similar to how Meg Ryan used to wear hers some years back.
I like it and it suits me and my casual life-style. I also color it with low-lights and high-lights, which I think helps thicken my super fine stands. It all works for me!

Mine went from straight (I suffered terribly through the Farrah Fawcett and spiral curl fashions) to curly with pregnancy. I wore it long for years, and when I got it cut shorter, the stylist said, "Why didn't you tell me you had all these waves!" I looked in the mirror, stunned - I had no idea. The funny thing is that when I was a teen, I used to babysit for a curly-haired lady who used to tell me, "I had stick-straight hair just like you until I had babies!" and I did not believe her.

Totally relate to this. I also live in FLA and part of the key is finding the right stylist to cut it and the right products to maximize what your hair is doing. I grew up with thick wavy hair but definitely not curly. After my pregnancy it just seemed to get slightly curlier with each year. Now I have lovely curls that look like a spiral perm. Crazy! I air dry it and go -- LOVE that I can do that now after all those years of blow dryers and hot curlers!

Mine was stick straight until about 3-4 years ago. I had my hair short for a few years then decided to grow it back out around age 42, and it came back in wavy/curly. I can spray water on it and scrunch it a bit in the morning and it will spring up. So weird. It's taken me a while to learn how to handle it. The bonus is I rarely blow it dry anymore, it looks better when I let it dry naturally. My hairdresser said she's seen it happen due to hormonal shifts. She's been cutting my hair for years so she got a kick out of it!
Good luck with your new 'do!

Not me, but my oldest had very straight, long hair. At about 13, she got her hair cut super short. It grew back in as spiral curls. Gorgeous! Now she is older and still has a heavy wave.

Did anyone else have hair that went curly later in life? Yes, I had thin-ish, stick straight hair that I would get permed (spiral perms!) My last perm was in 2000. In my early 30s (years after my last perm), I had a hair stylist compliment me on my curly hair. I practically argued with her about my having curly hair! She styled it with the curls. Now that I'm in my early 40s, I have thick, curly hair which I typically wear straight.
ETA: I've never been pregnant, so that is not a contributing factor.

Yes - it gets wavier as I get older. To make it look nice, I have to use some curling creme/mouse and I love the John Frieda sea-salt spray. And it works best in summer/heat/humidity. I rarely let it dry curly in winter.

My hair was straight until I had kids. Then it got more wave to it. It gets very frizzy looking if I don't blow dry it or at least straighten it.
DD just turned 12. Over the course of the last 6 months or so, her hair has gotten a very pretty spiraly curl to it. We just have to figure out a way to tame it so that it stays pretty looking throughout the day and not frizzy.

(no kids for me, either, so it's got to be some other kind of hormonal thing...) and yes, the frizz is annoying!!! today, it's so irritating to me that I feel like chopping it myself, lol!!
