Here in Spain they have the most enormous fireworks and they go off anytime anywhere. They are only sold from special huts around the time of various festivals, but everyone seems to be able to buy them. They let them off anywhere, fling them about and have no regard for animals or children. Much as I enjoy fireworks,I find the whole thing frightening.

No. People drive to other states to get them here. That's the same here. Anything that leaves the ground is illegal in our state. Love the law but dislike that it's not enforced and everyone does it anyway. Drives me nuts because I do NOT like fireworks. I think of the people with PTSD, the dogs, people with other health issues. My neighbor messaged everyone. "Hey, I want to start shooting them off a day early. Is that okay with everyone?" Nice that she messaged but I didn't respond. If I couldn't say anything nice, I kept my mouth shut. She then said how she hated them when her kids were babies because it would wake them, and she is glad they are past that stage. Well, my question is, what about the people that have babies now? Don't they deserve a chance to sleep too? What about those with health issues? The dogs? Sorry, it's my sore spot!

They are not legal in our city, but the county sells them. Apparently some jack holes in our neighborhood thought the rules didn't apply to them. Im having a serious meltdown now as the fireworks have a deep boom and are rattling my windows bringing back flashbacks of the accident. First time I have been in this situation..where I lived before people didn't set them off. Its been a rough night I am SO sorry. This is exactly what I am talking about in my post above. There are so many people and animals that fireworks "hurt." I wish they were illegal nationwide and only allowed by permit at larger arenas. If you enjoy them, go to the arena. But those of us that don't like them or have a medical issue don't have to endure them. I pray today is better for you and that they do NOT set them off tonight too. It seems to be a license to continue for days around a holiday.

Illegal in MA but it doesn't stop people from lighting them off. Scared the crap outta my pups last night. We don't do them.....every couple of years someone may have sparklers at a party, for the kids, but that's as crazy as we get.

Technically they are illegal, but the loopholes are so big you can drive a Mack truck through them. All you have to do is sign a form that says you're quarrying or scaring off birds, and you are home free. You don't even have to provide any ID. I remember way back in the 90's, DH signed the form Beavis N. Butthead. Seriously!
We're too old for that now. We were in bed fairly early, as we both had to be at work this morning. Surprisingly, we didn't hear a lot going off. I think the neighbors are mostly getting the hint.

They are legal here, but they are only for sale from Dec 27-31, and only legal to set off on NYE, supposedly between 9pm and 1 or 2am. There do seem to be quite a lot of 'practice runs' in the days leading up to NYE, and a few 'leftovers' on NYD.

legal here. We went to a friends for a cookout and fireworks last night (rural area - they live on 5+ acres) - they set off $4000 of fireworks! Absolutely AWESOME display! They had a ton of sparklers for the kids too - thankfully my little one was too fascinated by the HUGE water slide to have any interest because I've discovered an area where I AM a helicopter mum...couldn't believe people were encouraging toddlers (still in diapers) to handle sparklers

What I hate are those Chinese floating lantern things. One landed in the middle of our street last year. I went out to the pool this morning and had one of those things in the pool that I had to clean out. Now I need to vacuum all the burnt crap out of the bottom of the pool. I guess we were lucky it landed in the pool and not on the roof.

Nope never been legal In San Jose. That doesn't stop those from buying them in Gilroy and bring them back here. I just turn up my fan and go to sleep anyway.

Just the ones that don't leave the ground. They can sure make a lot of noise though! We are staying with family and the neighbor is the county chief of police and he shoots off mortars all night for three or four days around the 4th. He was going pretty late last night until a storm rolled in.

No, they are not, but we do buy some pretty mild ones when we're in PA, the worst being regular firecrackers. Normally we just do smoke bombs, sparklers, fountains...that type of thing.

They're legal here to purchase/possess, but they're illegal to set off in the city limits (not that it stops anyone). We used to do them anyway when I was a kid. The cops would come by and tell us to stop, we'd go inside for 10 minutes and then come back out and continue.
I haven't set off fireworks in years (not after being chased through my friends yard by a zinger her husband shot off incorrectly), and we're in the middle of a horrible drought, so no fireworks for us. The neighbors put on quite a show though, so that was fun.

I think they're illegal, but our cops only work two days a week and really don't care. Someone set off 1/4 stick of dynamite just to see what happened. These people are idiots.

They are illegal to set off within the city limits, but are legal in the county. We live so close to Memphis, this time of year we play everyone's favorite game: Fireworks or Gunshots?

Illegal in my county, but plenty in surrounding areas so there are some set off anyway. Most cities host a huge display. We went to a friend's house for BBQ and watched because her house is on a hillside right near the park so we have a great view. DH's family lives in LA area and they are legal there. We've always had a good time setting them off but last year in my SIL neighborhood there were a lot of scary illegal ones getting set off. We were sitting on lawn chairs and one went astray and shot right underneath our chairs! That scared the heck out of me, how unpredictable those illegal fireworks from China are. This year we did not go and I read this morning that a little 9 year old girl in Compton picked up one of those illegal firecrackers and it went off in her hands. She lost one entire hand, the fingers off another and and damage to her face.

Here, if you're in the city limits, you can't legally shoot off fireworks, although many people do and it's not strictly enforced. If you're in the county, it's legal, unless there's a ban due to dry weather/fire risk. Our house is actually in the city limits, but the property that backs up to our backyard is in the county, so, I guess as long as we kept it out back, we'd be good.

Yes, the "safe and sane" fireworks are legal. I'm glad because our Marching Band makes the majority of their money off of their firework booth. We have several Indian reservations within driving distance and, while those fireworks are not legal, it doesn't stop a lot of people from purchasing them. Our neighborhood (outside of the city limits) was rockin' last night!

legal in missouri
we put on a hell of a show over our pond -
fountains and the huge artillery shells that go boom and then 'ohhh....ahhh'
roman candles and bottle rockets - the little tanks that speed down the sidewalk - sparklers
the whole kit and caboodle!
i had no idea that so many people hate fireworks -

I don't think people hate them, it is just that in some areas that are just not safe. I live in an area where our homes are close together and there is a dry hill just blocks away. 5 homes in So Cal burned down this weekend and they think it may have been caused by illegal fireworks. I loved playing with them as a kid. My uncle would buy boxes of them!

Ground type are fine, and we buy them. The others are only legal when set off by professions. So we go see those displays put on by the professionals.

i had no idea that so many people hate fireworks - I don't hate fireworks. In fact I seriously miss getting out with my camera and getting awesome fireworks shots while hanging out with friends. Unfortunately life changed that for me and from all accounts by the experts, I have no control over how the deep booming ones affect me. If my neighbors had stuck to the little ones, it would not have been an issue. I do believe the ones they are using were illegal and definitely not for private use. This morning my other neighbor and I had debris and powder coating our cars. In my neighborhood you can actually see some of the bigger displays from our houses and the distant sounds aren't as traumatizing for the animals and the humans so its not like they didn't get fireworks displays. I did notice that on that next-door website, there was a HUGE multi neighborhood argument over this issue and some people flat out stated they didn't care that it bothered animals, veterans or those with other PTSD issues. Its the 4th of july and they were going to light fireworks despite the laws. You can't fix that kind of stupid.
