I'm really considering adding a cleaning service after our family vacation in December but I'm not sure what things I would have them do. For example, I will always do my own laundry. If you have someone come once a week, what do you have them do?

We had a service when I was pregnant with our second son. They cleaned three bathrooms, the kitchen, vacuumed and dusted every other week. They also stripped the beds and tossed the sheets into the wash.

We had a housekeeper two days a week when we lived overseas. I did the clothing part of the laundry and the tidying up. She would fold the laundry, wash the towels and sheets, make the beds, iron, clean the bathrooms, clean the kitchen, dust, beat the rugs, vacuum, ... I don't know what I would have done without her. She also cooked and helped with the kids, but a maid service wouldn't traditionally do that.

I don't, but if I did, I'd want them to, in no particular order: (1) vacuum; (2) scrub the kitchen floor, especially along the baseboards and under the fridge; (3) dust; (4) scrub down the showers; (5) clean the toilets; and (6) scrub the bathroom floors.

In my dream world they would deep clean the bathrooms, kitchen and all floors. Dusting to include all baseboards and mouldings. Then I'd rotate big jobs like the oven, windows, moving furniture to vacuum, mop under/behind big appliances, etc. I'm picky about my laundry and I also don't want to pay for day to day cleaning. Just the stuff that is difficult with my pain issues and things DH doesn't do very well.

I have one come every two weeks. She is here 3 hours and does floors, baseboards, bathrooms, dusting, window ledges, kitchen counters, cabinet fronts and one extra like the oven, windows, fridge, etc. She does not change sheets or do laundry or actually put our things away. I do that before she comes. I don't want her wasting time trying to figure out where DS keeps Pokemon cards. I'd rather she did the stuff I really hate. Like floors.

I have a lady come in once a fortnight. She is here for 2 hours and does both bathrooms including toilets, vacuums the carpeted floors, vacuums and mops tiled floors, wipes down kitchen cabinets and will do anything else that I need doing eg cleans the oven, washes Windows - but will not do the dusting!
She is worth the money to me and her husband also does yard work - mows the lawns, weeding, any pruning needed and the general tidy up sweeping paths and the like.
We are happy with what she does and even though sometimes I think I could still be doing the work I really don't feel guilty about having her doing it.

Services will typically tell you what they do each visit, and what they do on a rotating basis (once a month or whatever). Many have a sort of check off list that you can look at. Most services do not do things like laundry or changing sheets on beds unless you specifically request those things. Maybe call up a couple of local places and ask for their list of "every time" tasks and see what you think.
Usually you can just talk to an individual person who cleans houses (not through a service) and agree on what things will be done each time.

I have a service (a national chain). They do everything everyone has mentioned...dust, vacuum, clean kitchen, mop floors, bathrooms, ceiling fans, blinds... My service does change my sheets if I leave clean ones out. They "deep clean" one area on a rotating basis-- focus more on the baseboards, moldings, etc.
I generally do a better job--it's my house, so I care more. I never seem to have the same team twice but I think that's par for the course with big cleaning services. Every week, I see something that got missed... A big cobweb in my bedroom, or a dining room chair with a layer of dust. But my house is a whole lot cleaner than if I didn't have a service, because it gets done on a consistent basis. I would like to find an individual or smaller, local company eventually.
FYI, I pay $84 + 20 tip.

I would happily pay someone just to come in and clean the toilets. I hate that job!

I have a lady who comes every other week. She does the cleaning - floors, baseboards, bathrooms, toilets, etc. The heavy stuff that we don't have time or energy or the will to do. The picking up is something we're good about keeping up with partly because we know she's coming every other Wednesday. I don't need her to put away our stuff; I need her to clean. She does not do laundry but she does vacuum and dust and clean. My house is rather large so I pay her $100 per visit which honestly doesn't feel like enough to me but that is what she assessed when she first came out to do an estimate.

In my dreams I would have a cleaning lady to clean my kitchen, my bathrooms and my floors. I can handle the rest. And in my fantasy world that would get done once a week.

My housekeeper comes every other week and cleans the kitchens and bathrooms, including mopping the floor. She also cleans any hardwood floors and vacuums all rugs and carpet, and dusts everything. She spends the majority of her time in the main kitchen. Depending on how much time she has she'll often do one extra task, like clean out the fridge. We pay her $80 and it's SOOO worth it! When you work a full time job the last thing I want to do on my weekends is clean!

It is a woman and her mom that come every other week and does all that, too. The Man used to give me a hard time about picking up before they come but it is easier to clean south the clutter! He finally gets it. This is my second housekeeper I've ever had and she is good but I am comparing her to my first girl who was just amazing. There is always one of two things I wish she would have done beefed but I can't do it at all so I'm happy overall. I hired my first one when I was in school years ago because i just did not have time. Now it is something I look forward to and don't mind paying for it. I just have it in my monthly budget!

When someone is coming over on a regular schedule it makes it easier to keep things tidy. I know it shouldn't be like that but it totally is. We have to make sure it's all cleared up so she can get to the floor to clean it. Paying her to clean is a win-win. It gets our house clean and it forces us to be tidier pretty much all the time because I hate doing a mad scramble the night before to get it all picked up. Screw that.

I can actually keep my house tidier when I have a housekeeper. I was without one for about 3 months and it was horrible!! I had such a hard time staying on task when I'd try to clean - dam ADD. We have someone come every other week. She dusts, vacuums, cleans the hardwood floors/baseboards, cleans the bathrooms/showers/tubs, cleans the kitchen (including the stove). She's worth every penny.
