I went to a new stylist a couple weeks ago, and she recommended a flat-iron. I have very straight hair, so I'd never thought of it, but she said it could add a little volume and smooth it all over. I'm willing to give it a try, and of course I could Google it, but thought I'd ask the experts here. Could it oomph up my hair a little bit and make it more sleek, too?

Not exactly. But if it seems a bit frizzy in the morning, I will actually use my curling iron like a flat iron (just like the tip for using your curling iron to get wrinkles out of ribbons). A flat iron is probably a lot more effective but I don't feel like investing in a flat iron right now. Oh, maybe I will ask my sister for one for Christmas...
I don't know about adding volume (read: I don't know HOW to add volume that way) but it does smooth it out.

Yes. It really helps smooth it out. I usually just use it on my ends, or any strands that are a little wonky.

It will smooth your hair out but it won't add volume.

I use it to smooth it out sometimes if I want that really straight, polished look. look...but, I am not sure how it adds volume other than when I use it to add waves?

You can add volume by starting at the roots holding hair up and away from the head. Gives it just enough bump in the hair to hold it up off your head. Does that make sense?

I curl it with a one-inch flat iron.

I do it all the time and I'll be the first to admit I'm a straightener snob and always suggest in investing in a good quality iron. I had a CHI for many years and loved it..it had an unfortunate accident with my foot and broke lol so I'm getting a Babyliss brand one soon. I would go back with CHI but I heard they're crap now so I don't want to risk it.
As for volume it can add it if you do it right. If I want a bit of a bump (volume) in the back of my head I will take about a inch of hair pull it straight up then forward towards my forehead then iron it from root towards forehead so when it lays back down there is volume. I also will spray it a bit with Kenra 25 before I lay it back down. Sometimes I'll do a few layers depending how much volume I want.

I have strait hair and always flat ironed when I had a bob. It made my hair sleek and shiny. You can add volume by rolling the flat iron at the roots to give some lift. My hair is much shorter now and I got rid of my flat iron. My stylist always flat irons when he does my hair no matter the length.

I flat iron mine for special occasions - most of the time I can't be bothered . But it keeps the ends from either flipping out or curling under. It just gives a sleeker look that its natural straightness.

No, my hair is short but I've never understood the point of straightening already straight hair. Who wants to spend more time on their hair than necessary?

I have wavy hair and use it almost daily. I have a Babyliss and love it.

On an average day - no, I usually just get it straight with a round brush. If I have lots of time and I want my hair to be really straight and have each hair in its perfect place I will straighten it. I have fine hair so it doesn't take more than 10 minutes and that's only because I section it out before using the flat iron.

If you work it right at the roots, it can add some volume. Also, I do believe it smooths and adds shine to even already-straight hair. You must use a thermal spray for optimal results and to protect your hair, though.

Yup. Pretty much everyday. Just before I blow it dry I put a serum on the lower half of my hair. Once it's dry I give it a quick run through with the flat iron. Smooths any flyaway, the ends, and the heat working with the serum makes it shiny. I'll take the flat iron at the roots of the back part of my crown and pull it straight up for a few inches, gives it some volume.

I do. I have just enough wave to make it look like bedhead most days. I just run the straightener through it very quickly and it smooths things out.
I used cheap straighteners for the longest time. I finally broke down and bought a CHI several years ago. It makes a huge difference. It just glides through my hair, and does a much better job, more quickly.

I have straight hair and use a flat iron sometimes. It just smoothes it down but it tends to flatten my hair. Now if you want volume, try a volumizing shampoo and conditioner, get a round comb and blow dry your hair. That gives me lots of volume. I like the Biolage volumizing shampoo. To get more volume, I like using oribe texturing spray. Or try a root spray or any other root lift hairspray.

When I wear it down and straight, I do use my flat iron. It definitely makes it smoother and gives it a more polished look. I use it to curl my hair about half the time and the other half wear it straight.

My DD flat irons her very long straight hair. It makes it look very sleek but definitely does not add volume. If anything it makes it look finer and flatter.

Well, if it involves 'flips if the wrist' or any other fancy moves, that explains why I can't do it. :-P I am hopeless when it comes to hair styling. I struggle enough with adding waves to my hair with the straightening iron.... Erin

I flat iron my hair straight. It takes out any volume I have had. It feels lighter that way, too. I am leaving it curly right now, but I do wear it straight a lot of the time.

I do occasionally. My hair is straight but has a tendency to wave and frizz sometimes. It is super helpful to just give a nice polished look to your hair. Yes, it will flatten your hair not add volume but the results are amazing . Love my straightener!!

My hairdresser does it to my hair, and I love how shiny and smooth my hair looks afterwards.

Sometimes, but not every day. Too damaging on my colored/highlighted hair. I used to have a volumizing flat iron that had curved plates - that worked really well. I wonder if it's still around here somewhere ...

No, I do use a large curling blow dryer brush thing. It gives me volume and smooths/polishes.
