The color is Gray. My son's name is Grey. 😀 I'm the opposite! I think of a surname as Gray and the color as Grey...BUT, I named my DS Grey....because my DH see's no grey, just black and white...so this is his constant reminder! LOL

If I were writing a school paper, it would be gray. But there's something about the word that for me cries out to be written "grey". So in my daily life I write it that way.

I spell it as in colour (with an 'u') grey. I'm Canadian and use the British spelling for words.

I try to spell a specific name - surname, color swatch, street, etc. - the way it's presented, which is usually GrAy. If not a specific name, I always spell it grEy!

Grey because our school motto was "Green and grey, strict as may".

I spell it gray. I think grey was once considered the British spelling. (Not positive about that.)

When I was growing up I only knew the spelling as gray. That was how we spelled it on spelling tests and how it I always spelled it. Later in life I noticed on fine art products it was always spelled grey. I was under the impression that grey was the British spelling. It's interesting to see how many in the US also spell it grey. That's everyone for your input.

Gray for the past few years. I used to use both, until I looked up what the difference was between the spellings. I'm American.

It's my last name. I always have to spell it because you'd be surprised at how many people spell it 'Gary'! It cracks me up. I'm also a first grade teacher and new to the school kids often say 'I thought you'd be all gray'. My class also always wants to know why did I pick gray and not a prettier color for my last name. 😉 They all want to give me their gray crayons, too.
Funny things - No one in my family has ever had a gray car and typically don't get gray hair until late 50's.
I like having a color for my last name!!

Grey for the colour - British spelling in New Zealand. Gray is a surname.

I use both, usually grey if I'm describing something positively (beautiful grey horse, etc) and gray negatively (ugly gray day) and I have no idea why.
I think I use gray sometimes just as a neutral descriptor (gray dress).

LOL. From Mr. Google: ETA: I usually spell it gray. I've read such helps a million times, yet I can never remember them when I need to! Lol. My quick and dirty for affect/effect is Affect=verb and Effect=noun

If I'm saying someone has grey hair, I use the "e" version. But if I'm looking for a gray Copic marker or gray cardstock, I use the "a". But then, I guess I'm an oddball.

Contrasted with your family, my hair turned in my teens! I always thought that trait was how my family got the name way back in history and maybe it popped up in me!

Usually after thinking on it in confusion because I can't remember, I spell it which ever way I typed it in the first place with shrug and the hope that it might be right and that people won't laugh at me for being a big doofus who can't spell a simple four letter word correctly. I asked my Dh and he said this almost word for word. Lol. J

I seem to never spell it the same way twice. Like everyone else, if I am references something specific, then I spell it as that specific person, place, thing is spelled. If I am writing it out myself, it seems to depend on my mood, or maybe what I am talking about. I find that if I'm talking about painting a room, I write grAy, but if I'm talking about someone's eyes, I go for grEy. However, I'm pretty sure I typically go with grAy in reference to hair.
