This question came up this weekend. I have always spelled it gray, but see it in many places now spelled grey.
So how do you spell it, and why? I know both are correct, but not sure what the difference is.

Myself I use grey but if I am making reference to something that has already been named gray, I won't change the spelling of the word.

I think I use them interchangeably. I wish we could use affect/effect like that because I can never, after 48 years, remember which one is correct.

My family is named Gray. Gray is the Scottish version and Grey is the English version. I spell the color 'grey' because for me 'Gray' is a name.
We have family documents dating back to the 17th century and my Scottish ancestor's name was spelled Gray.

I spell it Grey, but I believe either spelling is acceptable. I think this is the main reason I spell it that way

I'm American, but I spell it grey. I always think of Gray as a last name.

Usually after thinking on it in confusion because I can't remember, I spell it which ever way I typed it in the first place with shrug and the hope that it might be right and that people won't laugh at me for being a big doofus who can't spell a simple four letter word correctly.

"Mr Grey will see you now" - the receptionist said. He stood there looking all sexy in a gray suit.

Like Oldcrow, I won't change the spelling if I'm referencing something else, but I spell it "grey". I also use "theatre". Back in high school, I had an English teacher that used those spellings; I liked her a lot and I really liked everything British at the time, so I picked up her affectation
