My DD just got her freshman dorm assignment. Of course, she ended up with the oldest dorm, the one with no A/C. She's bummed. This is the child who sleeps in a tank top with just a sheet in the middle of winter and wishes we'd turn on the A/C. She's going to struggle sleeping in no A/C when its hot out. She'll be in Indianapolis, so she won't have hot weather all that long, but still, August will be rough.
She and I are brainstorming ways to keep her cooler. I know a good fan is important, but are there things one can use on one's bed that can keep it cooler? I know there are pillow that claim to keep you cool. Has anyone had any experience with these sorts of pillow? What about a mattress pad? Are there any that really do keep you cooler?
Thanks for any advice. I know she'll survive. I survived freshman year in an un-air conditioned dorm in freakin' South Carolina. I told her I lost 10 pounds because the heat was so oppressive that I didn't feel like eating. Cure for the Freshman 10.

No advice for you, but you just gave me post-traumatic flashbacks to four miserable Augusts in non-air-conditioned dorms in muggy southern Ohio. I used to take cold showers, then put on my robe and lay down immediately in front of the fan, no toweling off or anything.

What college? My daughter goes to Butler, and she might have some dorm tricks, if we're talking about those dorms...

When DH was stationed in Sicily, his apartment didn't have AC. Summers were rough. He found that putting a bowl of ice in front of the fan helped a lot. I think he also tried dampening his top sheet and letting the fan blow across that. But, it would dry out after a while and lose its cooling effect.

I do have one of those cooling pillows. It doesn't really stay cool. When you first press down on it you will feel whole pillow cool and then you just get used to it. You can flip it over and it will do it again. Takes about 10 seconds to feel the difference in temp.
Will the dorm allow a window unit if she isn't on the first floor and it is inspected? (Assuming she has a window that actually opens)

Water bottle AC does she have a window? Also, you can get stand alone A/C units.

Dorms don't allow air conditioners because of the electricity they draw.

I saw that link. It requires 10 feet of copper tubing and 50 zip ties! Not sure we are up to that.

I'll ask if she has any tips, but I know one: if your daughter and roommate bunk the beds (which most people do, because it gives the room more space), the top bunk will be MUCH hotter than the bottom bunk...

Go, Bulldogs! (My mom is an alumnae) I went to a school 45 min west of Butler with no air conditioning. The heat won't last very long. Usually we were ok a week after Labor Day because the nights start to get really cool. Have her take advantage of the night air by having a big box fan sit right in the window to help suck that cool air into the room. Before she leaves for class, make sure the shades are drawn and no lights are left on. They can use the fan on the floor of the room in the doorway (we left our doors open while we were home) to draw some of the cooler air from the hallway during the afternoon/evening. I hope the sounds of fans don't bother her! Still to this day the sound of multiple box fans going reminds me of college. Lol!

I only went away for the first semester but it to was the oldest dorm w/o ac (in SC). We had a fan and that was pretty much it. Luckily, there were a lot of trees in the front of the dorm, so it was pretty shaded.

I would get her a twin size Chilipad. You can get them from their website or much quicker from Amazon. I have two king size ones and I swear by them. Especially great with hot flashes! They are expensive but worth every penny.

We have a mattress pad that has two sides, one for warmth and one for cooling.
When I lived in the dorms, we had a/c, but they wouldn't turn it on. It did have a bathroom with a shower, we ran the shower on coldoddridge@eaton.k12.co.us and then had a fan blow that air into our dorm.
Probably would have been cheaper to turn on the ac.

Then they overheated the dorms in the winter. We wore boxers and tanks all winter long and kept the windows open, even when we had snow.

My dorm didn't have air. We would have ice cream, shower, then go to bed. My parent's home only had 2 window units. We'd shower, then go to bed. I've worked in a school that hasn't had air for 36 years. We sweat all day long. It's not pretty nor does it smell very well. It's always interesting when the parents come to the buildings. They don't realize that the older buildings don't have air conditioning.
She will probably forget about it once things get going in the dorm.

I used to wash my hair and let it air dry overnight when I lived in TX one summer in a small duplex with only a window unit. But I had long hair and it took quite a long time to dry.....which cooled my head a bit especially with a fan.

Think about a standing fan.

My freshman year at LSU was in a non-A/C dorm. The humidity was as bad as the heat. But, I lived through it and have great stories to tell. I have one of those cooling pillows and it works pretty well for me. A box fan in the window would be good.

Right on the Ohio River, like a damn swamp. Ancient dorms, and yes, they were hot in the winter, too. Of course, now I live in southern VA, on the Chesapeake Bay, which is even worse. But at least I have air conditioning! Save

DD says: "Box fan in the window, personal fan by the bed. Any other fans, just position them to circulate air. It really isn't that bad, the head goes away in September..."
