To me, it implies just what you think. That we're still great, but we've slipped a little and have some very obvious issues to work on, but even in that, the US is an amazing place to live. To me, the term making it great again, doesn't imply that it isn't still great. I can see how others can see it that way, it's just that I and many others don't. I find it SO interesting as to how we all see the same things, even more or less agree as to what something may say and yet interpret the end result so differently. I guess this why someone gets paid the big bucks to look at the psychology of every single word and color and dots on the Is.

The slogan works for me because our country isn't as great as it was. I'm not pining for a utopia of long days gone by. I'm talking about how much better it was five years ago.
That said, if you compare us to the rest of the world, I guess we're still pretty great but we have huge problems. Our debt has reached a fever pitch. Our middle class is smaller than it has ever been and it's not because they've moved up. Unemployment is higher than most people think because those people who have stopped looking for a job aren't factored into the figures the media reports. And our economy's growth is under 3%, which is a huge cause of concern.
Add to those issues high racial tension and terrorist activity, we're not in better shape than we were even five years ago.
ETA: A large portion of our country is hurting. My family is doing well but a lot of millennials are struggling, my own children included. They are not living as well as their parents. That is one of the reasons Bernie has been able to attract them. They don't feel like their future is bright even if they work hard. Most people don't have $400 in savings for an emergency. Even with a good job, it's harder than ever to stay afloat because the cost of living continues to rise and wages do not.

And she gets after me for "shutting down conversation." Shutting down conversation happens when you demonize the opposing view. It usually happens with things like labeling with socially unacceptable phrases and terms such as racist, bigot, you must hate fill in the blank, xenophobe, paranoid, living in fear, evil, mentally deficient, Fox News watching, frothing, evil Republican, I don't like your source therefor your opinion is invalid, I can't refute what you say, so I'll personally attack you in some way, etc. Anything you can do to make someone fear being labeled and socially outcast, causing them to just shut up so they don't face any of that. I didn't do that, so your comparison of me to you is incorrect. I have never done any of those things to do except in your mind."I can't refute what you say, so I'll personally attack you in some way" is your MO, not mine. You are the one who just called Democrats sleazy and slimy. You've called me a bully when I disagree with your views and defend my own vigorously, said I was condescending when I took issue with your unsubstantiated statements or out-of-context quotes, accused me of shutting down conversation because you couldn't refute what I was saying, and have fairly recently participated in ganging up on me in all of that with like-minded friends. But even if I was doing all the things you say, in what possible way can anything I say to you cause you to be labeled and socially outcast? I'm a stranger on a message board. Your reputation here is created by your words and actions, and not anything I could do or say. If you want to talk about things happening only in someone's mind, well, that's a fear that's all in your head. And if my intent was to shut you up, I have obviously failed mightily. And finally, what did your comment add to the conversation? In what way did it respect the opposite view or further the conversation? It was just a cheap shot and you know it. I'm not going to claim I've never taken a cheap shot here, but don't act like you're somehow above it all.

I have never done any of those things to do except in your mind."I can't refute what you say, so I'll personally attack you in some way" is your MO, not mine. No. I don't personally attack. You might not like when I state facts or opinion, that contradict your facts and opinion, but I don't personally attack. Yes, the ones with the leaked emails are sleazy and slimy and that includes Hillary and Bill. I was NOT talking about Peas, if that's what you're insinuating. Yes, when you were being condescending several people told you that you were, not just me. I don't believe I called you a bully. When I clarified and backed up my statements with specifics and quotes 3 different times and it still wasn't good enough, there was no use in continuing on with you. It's kind of hard to refute, "Fuck you." and "your opinion is not valid because I don't like the source you backed it up with" (paraphrasing) Those are meant to shut down opposing views, not continue reasonable discussion. That was the one described above. It's funny though, how when the most vast and vocal do it, (the Left) it means that the majority have spoken and you must be wrong, but the ONE time it happened that the Left was MIA and you had no one to back you up, THEN it was "ganging up on you". I'm pretty sure you're smart enough to know that isn't true. You know how society works. The perfect example of attempting to diminish the person and discredit the opposing view. I don't believe commenting on the idea that just because the DNC came up with a more POSITIVE slogan, doesn't erase the fact that underneath, where they thought nobody would see, they were negative, ugly, vindictive, conniving and sleazy, is a cheap shot. Although, even if it were, it's funny again, that you only have a problem when the opposing side does it. Funny when you've had years of examples to point out "your" side doing it.

Good gravy, Gia, you are delusional. I turn your own words back on you - the very same thing you said to me - and you accuse me of attempting to discredit you. Same with the "your opinion is not valid" line - exactly what you said to me above.
"You only have a problem with it when the opposing side does it." Uh huh. Look in the mirror, girl.
And FYI, if people here think negative things about you, that's all about you and nothing to do with me. Take some responsibility for your own actions.

There's no frothing happening in my post. Just disagreement that because the DNC is sneaky about their sleaziness that they're less sleazy. Anyway, that isn't what I was commenting on in that post. I was commenting on the idea that just because the DNC came up with a more POSITIVE slogan, doesn't erase the fact that underneath, where they thought nobody would see, they were negative, ugly, vindictive, conniving and sleazy. The thing is, you're refuting something that isn't there. The post you're disagreeing with didn't say anything about the sleaziness or otherwise of the DNC. All it said was that they have a more positive slogan than the Republican one.

When I hear crap like 'Let's put the GREAT in GREAT Britain again' it makes me think, oh no (or whatever expletive I use at the time), we're screwed now.
