My sister called me last night. I don't even think pea livid describes how mad she was. Apparently the teacher let her kindergarten class watch SpongeBob during dismissal. My niece told my sister and my sister sent an email to see if my niece had the right story. She did. The teacher said they watched about 15 minutes before changing it to Peppa Pig. She said she is trying to entertain 30 kindergarteners for 1 hour during dismissal but she would find other shows for them to watch. Not sure why she is the only one with 30 kindergarteners or why they are there for 1 hour though!
So on the pea scale of no big deal to beyond pea livid how mad would you be?

ummmm...What is wrong with Spongebob? We always liked him around here. I know that as a parent I sometimes made some suspect decisions, but I watched Spongebob right alone with the boys and there was a never an occasion that even made my eye brows wiggle.

I haven't seen spongebob in a long time. I'd only be slightly annoyed. I wouldn't send an email to the teacher.
And I also have to wonder why does dismissal take so long.

Why does it take an hour for dismissal, and why isn't there learning going on in that time?

I don't think I can answer this question without understanding why the teacher has the kids for one hour of non-instructional time for dismissal.
If my child was watching one hour of TV during school hours everyday I'd be pea livid no matter what it was, but especially if it was something I didn't allow in my home.
But I think the root issue is the kids watching tv for an hour. That shouldn't be happening. Why is it?

Yeah for me it's more of an eyeroll. I'm a teacher so my siblings come to me with all their school "issues." I don't think teachers should be showing anything non-educational at school, so I wouldn't be showing SpongeBob, but I also wouldn't be entertaining 30 kindergarteners for 1 hour! My sister picked a charter school to send my niece to. This school has 95% of their teachers with less than 3 years experience. Young teachers make mistakes.

Apparently 2 classrooms combine rooms at 3:15 and then dismissal starts at 3:30. One of the teachers goes outside to call kids for their ride and the other teacher stays inside and all kids have to be picked up by 4:15. Not sure why they dismiss for an hour though! We start dismissal at 3:00 and are done by 3:20.

We don't want that show at our house! I wouldn't be happy about it at all, but I don't think I would be pea livid. I also wonder why the kids are watching an hour of TV during school time!

Only if it is the episode about "sentence enhancers"! That is a favorite episode for my husband and I On a serious note, I think I would be irritated. That is a lot of time in class that could be used in educational ways. I don't care if they trace a letter, work on shapes or do sight words. Anything is better than an hour of TV!! But, I wouldn't be "pea livid"!!

Spongebob is banned in my house . . . . BUT it's because it drives me absolutely crazy not because it is inherently inappropriate. I would be more concerned that anything non-educational is being shown for an hour. I wouldn't be pea-livid. I would be annoyed and probably send an email to let her know that I'm concerned about anything being shown for that much time - I limit the electronic time at home and would prefer that they find some other way to fill their time at dismissal.

Agree to disagree madam! I have been watching it with my kids since my oldest was three. I think what it teaches is character, friendship, and hard work. Yes, there is a lot of nonsense and tame adult humor mixed in there, but Spongebob would make an excellent friend. We watched the Halloween episode in class on Halloween (taught fifth grade) while we were waiting for the parade to come through our room and I did have parent tell me that it was a bad choice. She hated him (but really never watched a whole show- it was too irritating). I wouldn't have shown it to a kindergarten class though. The rating is 7+. I would respect that.

Sponge Bob? Don't care
Dismissal takes an hour for kindegarten??? WTH
THATS what I'd be concerned about, not sure I'd even be pea livid over that depends on why it takes an hour, how often would that occur etc. but my kids only went to 1/2 day K so 1 hour was a whole third of their 'day' and that I'd be pretty peeved about.

This wouldn't even register on the pea-lividity scale.
Is your sister upset about the long holding-time for dismissal? (that would be a minor annoyance) The TV thing? Or specifically the Spongebob thing?
Is she an extreme helicopter parent or ultra-perfect sanctimommy type? I just don't see any other reason for the level of livid you're describing.

I would have been annoyed when DD was that age, but I wouldn't have complained. We didn't do Spongebob until she was a little older.

To me that sounds like a really long time for dismissal, but if that's really the amount of time it takes, then I can understand them trying to find a way to keep 4-6 year old kids entertained during that hour.
Our kids just sit and talk while they wait for their rides or bus, but their dismissal takes less than half that amount of time.
Overall, the TV watching during a time when they wouldn't be learning anyway doesn't bother me. Would it be nice if they chose something more education? Yeah, sure, but as it stands, I would really just be wondering what could be done to speed up that process instead of worrying about what they watched during the time.

In my experience, when dismissal takes that long, it's because moms and dads show up late and teachers are stuck babysitting kids after the bell rings. You'd be surprised at the number who think it's no big deal for us to watch their kids for an extra 30-45 minutes after the dismissal bell.
If the child was sitting there watching TV for an hour, I'd wonder if it was because mom was late in picking her up. If so, I don't think mom gets to be picky about what age-appropriate show the teacher put on.

I would be upset that they are spending an hour of school time watching a TV show. Can they not use that time to read to the kids, play games, or color?

Why does it take an hour for dismissal, and why isn't there learning going on in that time? yeah that! Not a fan of SpongeBob myself and I think there are plenty of educational videos that could be played instead IF they have to be watching TV - Liberty Kids, Magic School Bus, Schoolhouse Rock... But the bigger question is WHY is it taking an hour?

I am assuming that dismissal time is not learning time. Big schools can take forever. Our kindergarten teachers had to stand outside with their class every single day and wait for the parents to show up. There were many days when parents were 30-40 minutes late. I would be peeved because that is your plan time.

Separate issues here - One, we love SpongeBob here, have watched it since kids were little, so watching that particular show would not be an issue. Watching it instead of play time with others would be a for real? I sent my kids to preschool and kindergarten to have time to play with others, with other toys, read, color, etc. outside of my home. I am not understanding why dismissal time can't be spent playing. When my kids had dismissal time at preschool/kindergarten on nice days they played outside until parents came and signed them out and on cold/rainy days they played inside until we came to pick up. With all the structured time in school it's really too bad they couldn't just have free play time. I would not, however, be mad at all, just a little annoyed but would hope it wasn't a daily but just a one time thing. And would hope they changed so that time would be used for playing/coloring, etc. in the future.

So this isn't class time, it's waiting for parents? I'd be just fine with that. My kids are 18 & 22 now, but we used to watch spongebob together all the time.

I can see a much better use of such a long block of time.
