I am thinking about starting a blog to make some money. Have to find ways I can make my rent every month.
I am thinking of doing it about my life, starting over at 50. Moving 300 miles and the roller coaster of emotions of going through a divorce.
I have a chance at starting a blog for 30 days and the guy will walk me through all the steps of starting a blog and getting paid for it.
The question is would any of you read a blog like that?
I also want to do a blog about coloring and how it has be so therapeutic for me throughout my life.

Would you read a blog like that? Why?
Your answers might help you decide if it's right for you.
Are you paying for this guy to show you what to do?

People who make the money have long term subscribers. They get thousands of hits a day. They have sponsors who pay to have their logo on the blog because they know thousands of people will see it. This sounds like a get rich quick scheme, and frankly, those never work. SaveSave

You might not start making money until a year later. There was a thread here the other day that amazon is looking for seasonal workers to work from home.

Please do not pay that "guy" any money! There is plenty of free information online about how to start a blog and monetize it. And no – it cannot be done in 30 days. Like someone said, it takes years to build up a solid readership. Even if you have very high traffic, and a loyal readership – advertising pays very little. Literally--pennies! You will never make a living off of a blog. Unless you are a super mega blogger. And those are very rare! I have been blogging for about eight years. I do not put advertising on my blog. I feel like it cheapens my content, makes it look ugly, and it brings me no money. ( I don't want a picture of the fat lady whose husband came back from Afghanistan and she was all skinny next to my great teaching tips… ) I make money by selling a product, and my blog is a vehicle to sell the product. My blog is the advertising. And you cannot just blog. You have to have an entire social media presence – Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, Snapchat… it is hard work! The most successful bloggers find a niche. And then they work hard to be the best of the best in that niche. Blogs are a dime a dozen. You have to stand out! For a little perspective, I get about 10,000 page views on my blog per day. It took me almost 10 years to get to that point! If I were trying to make money from advertising – I would fail miserably! Here's a great article that explains it much better than me: smartblogger.com/blog-ads/ Go ahead and start your blog. It's a lot of fun. But do it in your spare time. Do not try to make it your sole source of income. And whoever that guy is – tell him to take a hike. He just wants your money…

I think that this is one of those ideas that is either a passion for you or it isn't.
If it's a passion, do it. People can tell when someone is passionate and that's when they'll tune in.
If it's only an idea that you need to ask others if it's a good idea, the answer may very well be that you will be very disappointed if you are counting on it as a source of income.

Please tell me you're not paying this guy anything at any point in your blogging scenario.
Here's my honest opinion on blogs. Other than blogs of people that I know personally or "know" online, there are none that I read on a regular basis anymore. Years ago, there were some. IMO, there are way too many blogs out there that were started solely to make money--and it shows. The blogs that I used to read years ago were started by someone with a passion for something, and they didn't begin with making money as the goal. But even a few those totally turned me off after they became wildly successful and monetized.
I'm afraid it's going to be much harder than you're being told it is to make money by blogging. And there's no way that you'll make anything much at all quickly. As others have already verified, it takes years to build up a regular readership and loyal following.

If blogging interests you, jump on WordPress and start a blog. You'll be able to see your stats. You can share them here and get feedback about whether or not it's enough traffic to monetize it.
Please listen to what the others are saying about not paying someone to "show you" what to do.
It's free to use Wordpress (go to wordpress.com) and it isn't any harder than using these forums. Go for it! Just don't pay someone else at this point. If you start getting thousands of visitors a day, then it may be time to move to your own domain and monetize it. You can test the waters at no cost.
To give you an idea, I've been blogging since July 13. I'm passionate about what I write about and I'm having fun. On a good day, I get over 100 visitors (today I got 23 views and about 10 visitors - that is nothing for the Internet). I'm not selling anything and I'm not running ads (Wordpress runs ads on my blog for which they get paid not me.) I'm not even close to having enough traffic to consider monetizing it.
To help you in the short term, maybe we can help you brainstorm a way to earn some extra money. My heart goes out to you and I admire you for exploring ways to increase your income.

Well, no, I personally wouldn't read a blog like that, but I'm not 50 and I'm not starting over 300 miles away and I'm not in the midst of a divorce.
Now is the time of year where places will be looking to hire for the holidays. It's a good way to get your foot in the door for possible long term employment, but it's also going to be a good way to build up your resume if you've been out of the workforce for a while.

I don't want to be a downer but bloggers seldom make money out of it. Sure there are some of the very popular ones that do however they are a tiny percentage. To get the following you really have to be up with tens of thousands of followers. I have a niece who has about 50k followers on Instagram and she does get some stuff out of it buy nothing monetary. Someone setting you up a blog to make money sounds very snakeoil salesman to me.
If you want to blog about your experiences, it will probably be very cathartic for you and you may find yourself some followers along the way. I just wouldn't be counting on it to make you money.

How are you starting over? I would only read it if you were a good writer and going through some sort of transformation. I just read an entire book about a guy who spent 3 months hiking the Appalachian trail. That was interesting. I don't just want to hear about your emotional ups and downs. That would be draining.

Please be prepared for uncalled opinions from strangers that really don't care about you or the subject. Anonymous key board warriors who have nothing better to do. My friend started a blog when her dd was severly hurt in an accident. The comments just about ruined her. Many lawyers discourage social media when go thru a divorce. Good luck.

Anyone can start a blog, so I see a huge red flag when you say you have a chance to start one for 30 days. To be really honest, I think blogging is past its prime and other social media, especially Instagram and Youtube, are where people are going for information and inspiration. I rarely read blogs now unless someone I follow has posted on Instagram and indicated they blogged about it. I think katybee has given you great insight and it mirrors what a couple of friends have experienced. One choose to leave a successful stamp design career over the constant pressure to have Youtube content. Coloring is extremely popular right now so I would google and check out the top hits for coloring blogs. Take a look at what they are posting, how often and what other media they are posting to (all the links will be on their blog). I do think it will be harder to find an audience for your personal story. SaveSaveSaveSaveSaveSave

For those who I've followed and read their blogs, I rarely go to them anymore and instead view their IG accounts or view YouTube.

Good luck to you. I think it was really hard to make money from blogging, even when everyone was doing it and everyone was reading blogs. I think it would be much harder now, when blogs are much less popular than they used to be. That being said, a blog like you've described COULD gain a following -- surviving a divorce is a good "angle," because it's something that touches many people. But I think blogs that are mostly just personal stories (and don't really offer advice to others) are harder, because you have to somehow get people really involved in your life. I'm just generally not that interested in anyone else's life.

I think the blog trend has come and gone for the most part, replaced now with Twitter, Instagram and FB. I also think the market is flooded with coloring books and pages, so unless yours is a very unique style, it might not be worth the effort. (Sorry to be a downer-just trying to keep it real.)
If you are looking to work from home, maybe you could look for jobs as a "virtual assist" doing things like research, phone support, administrative assistance. Or check out a publication like Writers Digest for writing gigs.

In my experience, successful blogging involves having something to say, yes, but also involves being willing to engage in shameless self-promotion so that you can capture and keep the attention of an audience.
Two of my friends write very successful blogs and do make some money - more than I do, anyway - but they work just as much as I do with all the planning, writing, photo editing, networking, and self promotion.

I found my way to a few blogs by middle aged women that were the most depressing reads ever. Everything was a problem to be overcome, ad nauseam discussion of their depression. There wasn't any insight to getting over issues or breaking through to a better life. Just woe is me. Obviously there were followers, but I don't think you can monetize that subject. Even if you're wearing a cute outfit with killer shoes.
