I have a headache and I have felt a little "off" today. I was in the ER on Sunday for a possible retinal tear and my blood pressure was really high that night. They let me go in the middle of the night when my bp finally dropped below 170/110. I just wanted to go home.
Now I feel not myself and I am not sure if it is because I am dehydrated or if my bp is high. Dh is home with me this weekend and he is freaking out and wants me to go to er but I don't want to overreact.
I have agreed to go to hospital in the morning if I wake up still feeling this way tomorrow.
My dh is a cardio vascular tech and knows the danger of dangerously high blood pressure...but I am just not a rush to the ER kind of person. My visit to the ER on Sunday night was my first trip to the ER ever in my life and I am almost 48 years old.
I am really struggling with this ER thing. I know that I sound stupid, but in my mind I am not nearly old enough to go to the ER for high blood pressure. I don't want to have a knee jerk reaction and rush to the er but I also don't want to over look a potentially serious health issue because I am being stubborn.
Ugh. Getting old really sucks.
I don't know why I am putting this out there in pea land. I just needed to get this off my chest. I will defer to my husband's judgement on this.

Go buy a blood pressure monitor. They're only $30 at Wal-Mart and then you'll know if you need to go in or not.

I second the blood pressure monitor.
What did they tell you about your eye?

Send DH out to Walmart or a 24 hour CVS for a blood pressure cuff and then go from there.
It also could be a panic attack or anxiety.

My eye was a vitreous gel tear but not a retinal tear. I just have to super vigilant in the future about seeing any flashers or floaters and go to the ophthalmologist right away. Now that i am experiencing problems with vitreous gel it is an easy road to a retinal tear.

Good to hear that it wasn't a retinal tear. That surgery isn't fun.

I third or fourth or whatever the monitor-- if you have a flexible spending account, it should be an eligible expense.
Do you have an appointment with your doctor coming up to discuss the BP? Or was that somehow associated with the vitreous tear?

I have already seen the doctor for the vitreous tear. I am supposed to go see my regular doctor about my bp next week.

I agree with the others. Send DH to go get a bp monitor. Atleast then you can monitor the situation and see if the ER is the right thing or not.

Mine started with headaches and I felt like my body was pulsing. You don't need the ER you need to be seen by a reg. doctor so he can get it regulating, the sooner the better. Please get an appointment now.

Please get an appointment now. I went to the Dr. with a horrible headache, and my bp was 200+/100+. They sent me directly to the ER to get an IV to get it down. It took 2. Don't screw around with it. Get the cuff, and if it is anything like it was when you were in the ER before, do not wait to see your primary. I started on BP meds about 12 yrs ago, and have been on the lowest dose, as of recent. I was in my early 30's.

Exactly what KikiPea said. It's nothing to mess with or wait to see your regular doctor with, when it's that high accompanied by a headache. Get a cuff, but before that, go to the ER, get IV meds, get a script for oral meds. Then follow up with your regular doctor, as you might need some fine-tuning on the meds. I hope you've already been seen. Believe me, this IS a legitimate use of the ER. You could have a stroke if the BP continues this way. 170/110 might not cause a stroke, but when you mentioned 200s/130s, you need IV meds. Listen to your boyfriend!

Go get the monitor! I've been treated for high bp for over 15 years and sometimes it feels high when it actually isn't so at least a monitor will let you know if you can relax till your appointment or if you need to be seen pronto.
Look after yourself. 47 is not too young to have high bp, particularly if family members have it too. Are you aware of any family history?

I have gone to the pharmacy to check my blood pressure before but may get my own monitor. I have not had any problems with blood pressure until the last 6 months or so. It isn't super high I have heart palpitations and at times my blood pressure just feels like it is high--pressure in my face, headache, etc.
I hope that yours is not serious and you are feeling better soon!

I hope you are feeling better this morning. As others have already stated, your symptoms and history (however recent it might be for high blood pressure) need to be taken seriously and a visit to the ER is appropriate.
High blood pressure is very serious and often goes untreated for a long time because it can have no symptoms. Left untreated, over time, it can damage heart, kidneys, eyes. By the time symptoms are felt, it is taken very seriously.
When you were at the ER on sunday, did they refer you to your primary physician for treatment for your blood pressure? It used to be that 140/90 was the cut-off for what was considered hypertension, but it has recently been lowered to anything greater than 120/80 is now considered hypertension.

I'm sure that you know that hypertension can damage your eyes - especially your retina - so, given your issues, this needs to be taken care of ASAP.
I have hereditary hypertension and have been on blood pressure meds since the month I turned 30 - so for 23 years now. Taking one pill a day is no hassle - just like taking birth control pills isn't - and the benefits far outweigh the negatives. Hypertension can kill or permanently disable you - either through a stroke or through damage to any or several of your vital internal organs - heart, kidneys, liver, eyes, etc.
I agree with everyone else - now is time to buy yourself a cuff. Face the fact that you are going to need to monitor your blood pressure for the rest of your life. You are worth it.

I agree with the others that it's time to get a blood pressure monitor. I've been on one med for a couple years now and I've learned that sometimes when it feels like it might be high it's actually NOT. And there is quite a variance in BP readings depending on what you're doing or have just done and all kinds of factors. A monitor will help you know if it's really high.
Please don't take it lightly or resist going to th ER if needed. Much better to be safe than sorry. You were lucky with your eye that it wasn't a retinal tear because that is considered an emergency. My sister is at high risk for one and she knows she needs to be seen immediately if there's any indicators.

DH is headed to the DME store when they open at 10am to get an upper arm blood pressure monitor. I will know in about an hour what my bp is and then we will know what we are dealing with. If if is 200+/anything then we will be headed to the er for IV meds to get it lowered until I can get an oral script.
I will update later!

Good luck. I don't know how medical practices are over there but may I suggest that even if it's not as high as 200 and that is VERY high, could you at least ring ER for advice as to whether to go in? I don't know if you have that type of facility.

How is your bp? Don't be afraid to go the ER if the reading is too high. Better safe than sorry applies here.

Hoping you're already at the ER. Doesn't high HP have the potential to cause stroke?

I think you should still go in. The fact that you are feeling symptomatic with your BP that hight means you should get checked. This is not the thing you want to ignore and wait till later to address. This is what the ER is for. I strongly urge you to go in, maybe if not to the ER, maybe Urgent Care??? But please don't just wait till later.
