Don't get me wrong, I appreciate morality and wish we had more of it in this world. But we don't. On talk shows, movies, radio, and social media people are pushing the envelope and getting better ratings for sinking lower and lower, winking as the raunch-o-meter blows past the previous limits.
And rape culture? It's everywhere. Have you seen Adam Levine's video Animal? That's just one tiny example of what's absolutely accepted as "entertainment". He's a god to a lot of people, his popularity hasn't been hurt by glamourizing stalking, rape, and violence against women, it's been heightened. It is the ultimate hypocrisy to pretend we care about exploited women and rape culture. Where were all of the moral people as this country applauded each new "level" of rape culture as it was explored and then marched into our lives and laptops. It's no subculture, it's front and center everywhere. You are so used to it, I'll imagine you might not even stop to think about it when you see it. Pay attention. Really start paying attention and apply the new-found morality this country just FOUND yesterday!
I hate what Donald Trump said, and wish fervently that men wouldn't talk like that, act like that. But they do and most WOMEN don't stop it, and other MEN don't stop it and why not? Because it's accepted. Most people standing next to somebody talking like that would laugh and move on. Because it's just a "joke". What really bothers me is the absolute jaw-dropping hypocracy. The only reason people are acting shocked and outraged is because it fits a political agenda to do so. Like somebody crossed a line? What line? There is NO MORAL COMPASS in this society except Christians and other people with perhaps a religion, and they are mocked for having a different standard or standing up against crude comments, statements, movies, etc. Now suddenly this charade of being shocked and offended. I'm sorry but it's laughable. (I'm not really laughing) Not the offensive comments but the giant pretense. It's like the emperor's new clothes. Somebody needs to stand up and say come on, you people, this is naked.

Bullshit. There are plenty of "Christians" who are despicable people. And plenty of non-religious people who are good and kind and decent, and who stand up for morals. I'm not religious at all, but I speak up when I see evil.
Moral people will be moral no matter what their religion. If you need a religion to give you a moral compass, and the only reason you don't treat people poorly is because some deity might punish you, you're a crappy person.
let me add that the men in my life don't talk like that. And they speak up when others do. I've played on hockey teams where I was the only woman and they didn't talk that way. I've also played on a team with a person going through sexual reassignment surgery and nobody put up with anyone talking about him in a bad way. None of them were particularly religious, but every one of them was a decent human being who knew right from wrong.
if the men in your life talk like that and allow those around them to talk like that, perhaps the men in your life need to grow up.

Well bless your heart.
Signed, a moral atheist who doesn't watch reality TV and has never seen the Adam Levine video in question. But good job on the sweeping generalization.
And further, if a lot of what passes for Christianity in this country, including the far-right wing of the Republican Party, is your idea of a moral compass, I'd like mine to point the other direction, please.

Really? Interesting that I've been able to live my life as a non-Christian and with morals.
That comment is nothing but bullshit and YOU and others that feel the same way are just as much of the problem that you think this country faces.

No morality except for Christians and possibly some of the other (less important) religions?
Sorry, I'm too busy laughing my ass off to form a cogent response.
I agree that our cultural values are embarrassing and low brow, but I don't think the Bible makes anyone less inclined to be a piece of shit. In fact, some of the worst and most amoral people I have met call themselves Christians.
I admit that I'm suspicious of anyone who admits that their morality is entirely dependent on an invisible god and the book it supposedly wrote thousands of years ago. I don't refrain from rape, murder and general immorality because I'm afraid that Invisible Jesus will punish me; I don't do those things because they are wrong - even this big old heathen recognizes that.

This is so ridiculously offensive and completely untrue.
There's obviously no point in trying to have a conversation about this because a heathen like me couldn't possibly have anything useful to say to the moral compass of our society.
It's like the dictionary definition of sanctimonious came to life.

IIRC there was a strong reaction and backlash to the Animal video and the Brock Turner case is another example of outrage against the rape culture in our society (and has already resulted in changes to the laws in California). Seriously, religion does not give anyone a moral compass. Are you arguing that we can't know right from wrong without having to consult the bible or some other religious document?

Well, let's start with the fact that he's running for president, not for entertainer of the year. By doing so, he is asking to represent the people of the united states and the outrage is because people are standing up and saying "This doesn't represent me and I will not accept it!"
Yes, I think that "entertainment" has sunk to horrible lows and I don't watch that type of "entertainment". When others talk to me about this type of "entertainment", I speak up against it.
And I also have my very own moral compass, personally programed by me, not some male representative of a male God.

Of course I'm generalizing and there ARE moral people. But honestly people call themselves moral but have absolutely no issue with the disgusting crudeness we call entertainment. Christians too, yes so true. I myself have lowered my standards more than once because I want to be entertained and it's extremely difficult to even find a movie that would be classified "clean". I've left theaters ten minutes after the movie started, before, and drove home eating my movie popcorn..disappointed we can't be offered better cinema. I can't speak for everyone and I'm genuinely thrilled and happy if there are more who object than I've given credit to. It's not been my experience.

And for the record, the only people who "found morality" just yesterday are GOP politicians who finally decided that endorsing sexual assault was their breaking point. Not plenty of other examples of misogyny. Not racism. Not general vulgarity. Not the inability to tell the truth. Not xenophobia.
Nope. They "found morality" when they FINALLY realized they were tethered to a sinking ship and bailed to preserve their own political futures.
Oh, and they're all Christians. Nice moral compass you've got there.
Meanwhile, plenty of us recognized the moral wasteland that is Donald Trump long ago and while appalled by his behavior, hardly just "found morality."

Personally, I think that most people intend to live good and moral lives. Christians, atheists, agnostics, folks of many religions - I live in that diversity and most people I know intend to be good people and raise their kids to be good people. I think that looks different in different families, but I do believe that. (And sometimes we miss, too.)
I think sometimes our entertainment choices wouldn't pass the real life test. I read books and watch movies that portray all manner of thing that doesn't reflect what I believe to be a good and moral life. Those are stories. I am pretty careful what my young child sees, and there are things that are far too much for me, but the reason I point out that those are stories is because much of what's going on in our world now isn't stories. It isn't a music video, it is real life.
I think if there was a new moral revolution in which we collectively decided to display more love, more generosity, more honesty, more dedication, and speak better about one another and care more about one another's feelings, that would be a great outcome to this election.
But I don't think this is a newfound sense of morality - I think it's just that DT is a real person now and not reality TV, and folks are saying this is now a big step too far for us.

And now her back-peddling has begun.

You lost me right there. I'm not sure you realize how patently offensive and downright unAmerican that statement is. And for the record, I don't watch raunchy TV or movies. I don't watch trashy videos. I don't watch reality TV. I think it's disgusting, and I think Donald Trump is disgusting, too. My husband, his brother, my brother, my father ... they didn't/don't speak that way. Not in front of me, not behind my back. Defending his filthy mouth as "all men do it" is not an attractive or believable stand to take. I don't need to be a Christian or "perhaps" have some religion to have a moral compass. Conservative Christianity is not the standard I feel all Americans need to be striving to live by.

I completely agree with you regarding the "Animal" video; I couldn't even watch the whole thing. It was disgusting. I also find the number of shootings on tv shows in this country to be appalling; to me this is part of a culture of violence.
However, I believe we do and should expect something better from our President. Yes, this was 11 years ago, but Trump has shown over and over that he has no respect for, well, anyone, I think. This is just one more piece of evidence that shows his character. I don't think the talk is worse than things he's said about Mexicans, or making fun of the disabled reporter. But part of what he says on the tape describes actual assault, and that is worse than just speech.
I played the video for my husband, and he was appalled. Not all men are like that. Not by a long shot. It can't and shouldn't be dismissed as "locker room talk."
I think my morality has been pretty consistent throughout my life. It has nothing to do with religion. It is based on the concept of treating others as they wish to be treated. I'm not perfect, not by a long shot, but I believe that I am a far more moral, caring, intelligent and thoughtful person than Trump. I don't feel that way about our current President. I believe he is at least as intelligent, caring, moral and thoughtful as I am, and he is WAY more gracious and a much harder worker than I could ever be. I want a president who is better than me. And Trump isn't.

The idea of a man like this running for president of the United States should shock and outrage people. And many of us were shocked and outraged.......long ago. The only thing I don't understand is why some of his supporters are finally acting shocked now, after all the many other disgusting things he has said. This is the particular line they won't cross, but all the other things were ok, I guess. SaveSave
